::: Still catching up

Gleaned this from Dirk over at ¡Journalista!

:: Hard work key to comic-book success…or…not…?

The Edmonton Journal interviews Kim Hoang and Jordyn Bochon, the young BC publishers of Doujisou, a soon to be concluded comix anthology. The headline for the article seems to run counter to the story, where it is emphasised by the young publishers that if you want to publish comics, EXPECT to lose money and work hard for little more reward than having done it. Sage advice. Do it for the love kids.

Dogsbody, TCJ's online review column pans Raisinlove Graphix's Zombie Commandos From Hell #1 bottom of the page - ...Apparently mostly for being crassly commercial buy creating banner space on every page in the book for advertising or self promotion. I haven’t seen the book in question but it sounds pretty tasteless. I like zombies as much as the next kid who saw night of the living dead on the late show in the 70’s, but someone might want to suggest to the Raisinlove gang that they spend a bit more time cultivating some stronger narrative content before they try shilling stuff.

CO flat earth - It seems my old friend Jay Stephens has gotten his Oddville strips running in a special section of the Toronto Star now called Brand New Planet. That’s quite the shift of venue from his alt days in Exclaim magazine. The Star is a national daily newspaper, plus the special section is also distributed separately as a free weekly in Toronto schools, libraries, sports arenas, and shops.

Jay - "I'm thrilled to say it runs as a full-colour, half-page (tabloid size) strip. The pay ain't too shabby, either. And the best part is, I haven't had a single edit yet! I'm in cartoon heaven!"

For any one thinking of pitching the new EPIC with a book proposal:

While you read Dan Wickline's THE 12 STEP PROGRAM over at CWN (a good how to series of articles on developing a comic book for the adventure/action market) to figure out how to go about putting together a sound pitch, also take some time to look in on how things are progressing for the apparently anonymous amateur author of Writer@Large, "A weblog dedicated to my efforts in the field of writing. Currently, it records my efforts in submitting to the new Marvel EPIC line" If there are many pitfalls to be encountered in dealing with EPIC light, it’s likely that you’ll here about them here.
