:::Recently released by the MG collective

Pour une personne

»For one person«

-“ In this remarkable work on time and space, Benoît Joly transports his reader through the desert of the ocean to the vault of heaven, then in surreal space, to urban tumult, and finally on the calms of a beach.

More than ever with these pages, his work calls upon the imagination of the reader, their intuition and feelings. Heat of sand, wind cherishes, dense pollution and full abstract movements are the stuff of this book. The fact that these pages were carried out over more than fifteen years confirms the visionary reputation of Joly. “
Translated from the MG site by Max

That’s some high praise, for some very interesting pages. Talking to the MG guys at the show they referred to the work as Haiku BD. Vary elegant rhythmic story telling. A lovely book.

You can see more samples of Benoît’s work here and order the book here.

You may or may not have noticed that we have a .org url (montreal.comixjam.org) as well as the grenadine host address. That's because local artists and publisher Michel Vrana of Black Eye fame set up the comixjam.org domain some time ago with an eye towards expanding it into a hub domain for all Jam related things. Seems the wheels are turning on this plan now with URLs now for the following Jams

montreal.comixjam.org

toronto.comixjam.org

london.comixjam.org

nyc.comixjam.org

sanfrancisco.comixjam.org

Also he’s started his own news blog at comixjam.org and a message board you will find included in the listings on our FORUMS/DISCUTEZ page.

In addition to that you can now get a @comixjam.org e-mail alias! To get your own free @comixjam.org e-mail alias send your current e-mail address and your requested comixjam.org e-mail address to: request@comixjam.org. Ideal for those with hotmail or other no-name mail accounts.

The Flaming Fire Illustrated Bible.

Been trolling their site between panels of inking on book 2. Noticed a few things intresting

Farel Dalrymple of Pop Gun War fame is taking on the entire book of Jude! Jude 1:1, Jude 1:2, & Jude 1:3 are done already.

Tony Millionaire has turned in a hunting page for Psalms 143:3, and Jim Pinkoski looks to be taking the title of most prolific with 75 pages done so far, I think he may be using his old stuff as clip art.

Ok, this morning reading, grab a cup of coffee and…

Moriarty @ Flat Earth, Blue Metropolis part I: A review of another Comix event at the Blue Metropolis literary festival reviewed here, very interesting, sold-out Writing Ridicule panel with Monty Python member Michael Palin and Montreal political cartoonist legend Aislin. It seemed this was a hit and the gentlemen won the crowd. A hint here, smart funny people talking about the stuff they love is almost always fun to witness.

Also some links for brushing up on your Canadian Comics history.

And speaking of history, you’ll find A users guide to the Comix Jam has been revamped to be easier to use (see [ HOW 2 JAM ] in the nav bar to your left). including now as well the history of the Monthly Montreal Jams.

::: Conudrum gets an overhaul

Have a look at the new and improved Conudrum Press website, proprietor Andy Brown has been tuning it up over the winter.

...And pick up a copy of the Amazing CYCLOPS: Contemporary Canadian Narrative Art

In Montreal, a large community of artists, both French and English, has emerged at the forefront of a graphic narrative movement, after twenty years of struggle. Perhaps it is the unique position of the city, influenced by both European and North American styles, which has made some of these artists internationally recognized.

Cyclops is the work of twenty-five highly prolific, award-winning, mature Canadian artists. Consisting of longer graphic narratives the book allows these artists room to express themselves within a medium which fuses the form of the graphic narrative with the conventions of the short story. The stories relate to the human condition and are told through a variety of approaches including humour, autobiography, poetry, philosophy, legend and myth. Some of these artists are well known in North America as well: Tessier and Lafleur released the Fantagraphics title Theatre of Cruelty; Harvey award winner Michel Rabagliati has had work appear in the Drawn and Quarterly anthologies; Bernie Mireault is featured in the Blair Witch Chronicles; Marc Bell's strips are syndicated across the country and Highwater is releasing his Shrimpy & Paul book; Bottenberg is also the Montreal Mirror's music editor; but for most of the French artists this book will be the first showcasing of their work in English. Cyclops is the English version of the popular and critically-acclaimed series of Cyclopes books which have represented Quebec culture abroad. Publishing their innovative work in translation will finally provide an opportunity for these artists to be appreciated in the rest of North America.

::: News on the vine

First, this just in from David Bacha

Hi,

Way back in the winter of 1999, a small bunch of us made a short animation that i like to call, "Spoons In the Couch".

It’s now featured on zed.ca, drop by and have a peek.

Don't forget to log-in and vote for it!

peace,

david

I just watched this, it’s a lovely short film, spend a moment to watch this, you won’t regret it.

Also if you’re looking for something to do this Saturday night (19th), Andy Brown of Conudrum sent in this reminder…

Hey all you Montrealers,

Just a reminder that the Perpetual Motion Roadshow pulls into town on Saturday night at Zeke's Gallery (3955 St. Laurent) at 7:30.

Corey Frost and Marc Ngui will be performing with The World Provider and Charlie-Girl Anders. If you missed Marc Ngui's performance at his launch here is your second chance.

Apparently the tour is going well. From Brooklyn to Cincinnati to Cleveland to Chicago so far, and then Toronto, Montreal, and Boston. You can listen to the gang as they call in their tour diaries at the Roadshow's site. Corey missed a few dates cause he had bronchitis and Marc had trouble at the border.

Anyway check out the Mirror today for an article and interview with organizer Jim Munroe.

Hope to see you all there!

Andy Brown

If for no other reason you should try to get out to this for Ngui's performance! I caught it the first time around at his book launch, and it was wonderful, no shit. His comics get ten times better (that’s saying something, considering) once you can hear the characters voices.

Here are a few photos from the Launch

ANNOUNCING! THE PERPETUAL MOTION ROADSHOW!

- Jim Munroe -

Putting together an indie press touring circuit wasn't something I'd planned to do. Consciously, anyway. But it's been in the making for the last four book tours I've done, and it really started to gel when I was in the US in November promoting Everyone In Silico. The shows were close enough so that the drives between cities weren't ordeals. My tourmates had great acts, and we were able to pool audiences and travel costs. And the people who organized the shows usually did it well, and enjoyed themselves. So when I got home from the tour in November, I was so stoked that I did the unthinkable -- immediately started organizing another one. But not for me.

There's already a lot of touring going on -- vans full of zinesters, people driving their weirdo movies from city to city, mobile political projects -- basically people taking the band model and applying it to their kind of art. As inspiring as this is, it struck me that we were all reinventing the wheel each tour, and though it is certainly possible, planning an ambitious tour is a huge logistical challenge for all but the more organizationally inclined. So I decided that since it'd be a while before I'd get to hit the road again, there was no reason why like-minded people shouldn't use the same route.

PROPAGATING THE NETWORK THAT ALLOWS INDIE CULTURE TO EXIST

So, after a bit of tinkering, an indie press tour circuit was established: The Perpetual Motion Roadshow. Once a month in April, May and June, a crew of three performers from different genres and cities will be performing in the same venues in Toronto, Montreal, Boston, Brooklyn, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Chicago. I've called the new website for the Roadshow, thinking of ".net" as "network" since the only way I've been able to tour as extensively as I have is through the support of this mailing list -- a network of people excited by indie culture.

And what happens with the Roadshow beyond June has a lot to do with how much excitement there is for this project. It could just be a three month thing, but if enough people go to the shows, fill out the online questionnaires to take their show on the road or to be Roadshow agents in their cities, it could continue indefinitely. It could even be the first of several circuits -- a west coast loop, for instance, would be pretty easy to set up. Could we develop an indie culture infrastructure that runs on volunteer power instead of corporate money? Let's see!

THE GRAND EXPERIMENT HAS ALREADY BEGUN...

Last night, the first 7-cities-in-7-days tour kicked off with the Brooklyn show. You can hear how it's going by listening to the Pay Phone Tour Diaries, updated daily at nomediakings.net. Each night, Marc Ngui will be doing the voices and the sound effects from his illegal comics, Charlie-Girl Anders will be genre-busting, gender-fucking and singing, and Corey Frost will be talking compellingly about ethics & plums. (Well, hopefully. You'll have to listen to his Diary to get the full story.) Today they'll be in Cleveland, tomorrow Cincinnati, and Chicago on Thursday. If you're in those cities, check the site for venues and posters.

This Friday, they'll be rolling into Toronto, presuming Marc has an easier time getting into his own country than he did getting into America. It will also be the launch for my CD-ROM zine Novel Amusements and I'll be showing short vids between the acts. The Phonemes, purveyors of the soft revolution, will be making music of a live variety, while DJ m@b will be spinning recorded music.

Friday, April 18, 8pm. Clinton's Tavern (693 Bloor Street W., Toronto). $5, but with the PMR guarantee: NO BORING READINGS OR YOUR MONEY BACK.

Been adding a few things every day to the links page

wanted to point out these in particular;

The Aspiring Comic Book Artist’s On-line Mentor’ A page on Yanick Paquette’s site that he and Michel Lacombe put together a while back, Has some decent advice, particularly if you are interested in tips on working in a photo realistic or ‘Heroic’ clear line style.

Includes three Quick lessons, on writing, pencilling, & inking. As well as a list of good recommended reading suggestions.

It’s an ideal introductory site for bingers; but potentially helpful to all artists depending on there approach to studying their craft.

And the work of two accomplished Canadian Artists, Stuart Immonen & Kagan Mcleod. (don't miss the link to Kagen's comic, Infinite Kung Fu! - very cool! Thanks to Z for the fed ex box of magazines that turned me on to his stuff).

Hi all.

I'm art writing (freelancing) for the Gazette now (Arts section).

Please send me Notice of happenings, events and other suggestions for articles to pitch.

One thing for now, can people recommend to me some of their favourite local female comic artists, with a bit of publication behind them?

I have in mind Julie Doucet, Genevieve Castree (she's in B.C., though, right?), Jane Tremblay. Oh yeah, there's NATO. So who am I missing?
