::: Fantagraphics needs help!

Got back for a nice night at the Jam to receive this dark news.

Like many in the comics biz as of late, Fantagraphics is taking their turn on the cliffs edge dangling over economic doom this month. The ground breaking publisher is in dire financial trouble. This press release explains the details but it comes down to this. In order to say alive in their current configuration they need to move $80.000 worth of stock THIS MONTH, IN ADDITION to their usual business. So, if there is some book(s) published by Fantagraphics that you have been meaning to get, now's the time to get it. Ideally order it directly from them so there is no middle man and they make the most of the cover price.

This - a last ditch plea for direct orders by a publisher - worked for Top Shelf back when their mutual former, now bankrupt book trade distributor went under leaving them in the same situation. Fanta managed to stave the sharks off at the time, but a second spot of bad luck has put them in the same position.

So drop buy there site, check out the online catalogue and buy a few books, pick up enough of em' and you might even get a personal thank you from publisher Gary Groth (see the press release for how)

Bad news care of the grape vine.

::: New web site

Nom d'un Chien

I’m excited to point to the still barely there but promising nomdunchien.com.

All recent graduates of Université du Québecs’ sequential arts program ("Bande dessinée et figuration narrative") in Hull Qc (they’ve been teaching sequential art in Quebec since ’73 apparently), they have been putting out some excellent zines under the Nom d'un Chien name, getting them selves published here and there, and making noteworthy contributions at the Jams when they are in town.

Artistically Bob, Sabine & Ray all display a lot of talent and a fun, dark & quirky off kilter sense of humour. The work is still in the ‘being worked out as the artist draws’ stage of development, but I find it all the more enjoyable to watch, and having had the pleasure of flipping through some pages for the most recent editing of Nom d'un Chien at a jam a few months back I have to say, they are already displaying some very highly refined work. A interesting mish mash of influences that chart the local comix scene over the last dozen years or so they are quite likely to be amongst the more notable inheritors of the legacy of artists like Julie Doucet, Dave Cooper, Valium and co.

Keep your eyes peeled for these youngun's. The latest edition of Nom d'un Chien is available @ FICHTRE now.

::: New web site

Martyrdom

Stepping up to represent the more than prodigious Metal/Goth scene in Montreal in the comics’ medium is martyrdom.ca.

A new publisher/anthology magazine working under a indy variation of the WFH model with all the stories so far being contemplated by Martyrdom publisher Pierre-Luc Therrien set within a self contained ‘universe’, the publisher is offering themselves up as a gateway for artists who want to break in the american comics industry or who would like some more exposure.

Some decent art to be found on site, haven’t seen the magazine yet myself. Looks so far like a fair grassroots level publishing venture, ideal for those looking for a ‘first step’ opportunity to get a little experience. But take note, martyrdom’s submission guidelines insist that you “Send ONLY art samples of [featuring] OUR characters.”

::: New Jimmy Beaulieu art online

MG publisher Jimmy Beaulieu
has just added 53 pages of sketches to his personal web page for your consideration. In a recent group mailing he asked if people thought it would be interesting to see a book of his sketches alone. I think if it were well curated and focused, a book if Jimmy’s personal, non-narrative art would probably be wonderful, ideally a full colour edition would be nice. Drop by his site and let him know what you think after taking a look.

::: D+Q is the proud publisher of a couple of spanking new comics and graphic novels.

PAUL HAS A SUMMER JOB
is the latest arrival in our doorstep. Michel Rabagliati's sweet coming of age story has been getting a lot of new fans. This is a special book that seems to get people passing it around, saying You will love this. We¹ve got rave reviews from Alan David Doane, Chris Allen and Andrew Arnold on the web site, and they all agree that this book has some of the best storytelling comix seen in a while.

R. Crumb's latest collection of placemat drawings from France WAITING FOR FOOD
arrived courtesy of Dutch publisher Oog & Blik and North American co-publisher D+Q. No word on how we'll be hyphenating this baby. These sketches were made on placemats in restaurants across Frances, where Crumb and his family have lived since the mid-1990s and themes of over-consumption, pop-consumerism and alienation pervade the drawings.

Also in stores over then next bit from D&Q: Berlin #10 by Jason Lutes, the latest chapter in his Berlin trilogy is in stores now. New in paperback this summer is Debbie Drechsler¹s Summer of Love, nominated for the Harvey for Best Graphic Novel. & Chester Brown’s Louis Riel will be available as a collected cloth book this September but in the mean time, you might fancy a T-shirt, released with the end of the series. Designed by Chester, the T-shirt features the cameo portrait featured on the cloth book and favorite panels on the back.

More on all this, and where you can see the D&Q crew in the flesh at various events, all on there News page.

Burgeoning baddies battle alongside browbeating goody-two-shoe do-gooders!

A comix movie review By Rick Trembles

Once again Rick sums up a movie nicely.

Watched X2 myself and though i got a laugh out of it as nostalgia, I found these basic points of plot & story less than impressive.

Jay D'ici Reviewed Xmen 2: United as well in his most recent edition of Supersized.

But no one has mentioned the shear camp of Hugh Jackman's Wolverine. Not that I think it's his fault, he's doing it dead on. But the character has always been such a classic Marblo Man, I just have to laugh.

:::the Perpetual Motion Roadshow

Hey there,

Some people thought the last No Media Kings update was about a tour I was going on. Actually, it's an indie press tour circuit I've set up for OTHER people to go on. If you haven't already, check out the new .net site all about the Perpetual Motion Roadshow at:

WARNING: It's a sideways scroller. Your mind just might be blown.

Want to go on the 7-cities-in-7-days tour?

Go here:I know questionnaires are a little weird, but at least it's kinda funny. And it'll give you a good idea of what you're in for.

Those of you who want to help out with the Roadshow in your city, check this out:

Missed the first Perpetual Motion Roadshow? Desperate for more?

Well, the May Roadshow is starting next week, featuring Dream Whip Zinester Bill Brown, Wide Collar Criminal Matthew "M@B" Blackett, and Kiss Machine Operator Emily Pohl-Weary. To find out more about what the talented trio will be doing and where, tune into the web site.

While you're there, sign up for the Roadshow list if you want to keep getting monthly updates like this directly in your mail box.

The April Roadshow, dubbed the "Wing That Mother" Tour, went well but had its fair share of calamities -- border hassles, skinhead shenanigans, and bronchial infections -- but you can hear it from the horse's mouth at the Pay Phone Diaries:

...my favorite is Charlie-Girl's call from Cleveland.

PLUS!

The Do-It-Yourself Movies section has had a new addition with Carma Livingstone's excellent article on sound, HERTZ SO GOOD:

That makes it a dozen how-to articles about making vids and animation!

Liking this spring thing,

Jim Munroe
