One Bloody Year: Fall by Michel Lacombe

Reviewed by Michael May @ CWN. A few flaws pointed out but in general a positive review. Also happily a well considered and well written one.

One Bloody Year: Fall is solicited in the June PREVIEWS (page 345, order code JUN032415) for release in August.

Samples of the comic are available on the author’s site

:::Epic and what every one wants

Andrew Wheeler’s editorial this June at Ninth Art is on the topic of the Epic call for submissions and the flack there of. I highly suggest reading it if for no other reason than the paragraphs where he eco’s some of my own most strongly felt opinions on what the medium need more of.

::: I hit mute during commercials

Ok, well I still haven’t had a chance to see this book, but as I mentioned a few posts down, Dogsbody, TCJ's online review column pans Raisinlove Graphix's Zombie Commandos From Hell #1 this month, mostly on the basis of the fact that Raisinlove chose to put adds on the bottom of their first issues pages (2 thirds of the text is dedicated to this complaint).

It seems that Dogsbody failed to mention that these adds only appeared in the first issue of the book, which was also accompanied by a CD soundtrack (provided with the book). And Dogsbody may or may not be aware that the adds are from Internet sites and magazines which had offered advertising spaces in exchange for the banners on the comic's pages, music labels which bought copies of the books to sell their catalogues, operators of vending tables at concerts promoted by Raisinlove, and artists who contributed to the comix themselves. Which makes them all as relevant to the book as anything you would find advertised in a Fanta book.

I realise Fantagrafics & TCJ has a ethical issues with advertising in comics and wrestles with the question of what’s appropriate in their own publications all the time, but ultimately they too place them in their books, all be it on separate pages from the comics. Dogsbody’s assertion that these ones, appearing on the same page as the strips, invade ‘sacred space’ is at best taste making, which I suppose is the territory of a column like Dogsbody, but none the less has little to do with the story content of the book being reviewed (that would primarily be the story and not the adds).

So for an opinion of that you may want to skip directly to the third paragraph of the review, where they basically say it’s bloody minded crap the President of the United States would enjoy. High praise in some circles and more or less what the publisher expected to hear from them.

::: Still catching up

Gleaned this from Dirk over at ¡Journalista!

:: Hard work key to comic-book success…or…not…?

The Edmonton Journal interviews Kim Hoang and Jordyn Bochon, the young BC publishers of Doujisou, a soon to be concluded comix anthology. The headline for the article seems to run counter to the story, where it is emphasised by the young publishers that if you want to publish comics, EXPECT to lose money and work hard for little more reward than having done it. Sage advice. Do it for the love kids.

Dogsbody, TCJ's online review column pans Raisinlove Graphix's Zombie Commandos From Hell #1 bottom of the page - ...Apparently mostly for being crassly commercial buy creating banner space on every page in the book for advertising or self promotion. I haven’t seen the book in question but it sounds pretty tasteless. I like zombies as much as the next kid who saw night of the living dead on the late show in the 70’s, but someone might want to suggest to the Raisinlove gang that they spend a bit more time cultivating some stronger narrative content before they try shilling stuff.

CO flat earth - It seems my old friend Jay Stephens has gotten his Oddville strips running in a special section of the Toronto Star now called Brand New Planet. That’s quite the shift of venue from his alt days in Exclaim magazine. The Star is a national daily newspaper, plus the special section is also distributed separately as a free weekly in Toronto schools, libraries, sports arenas, and shops.

Jay - "I'm thrilled to say it runs as a full-colour, half-page (tabloid size) strip. The pay ain't too shabby, either. And the best part is, I haven't had a single edit yet! I'm in cartoon heaven!"

For any one thinking of pitching the new EPIC with a book proposal:

While you read Dan Wickline's THE 12 STEP PROGRAM over at CWN (a good how to series of articles on developing a comic book for the adventure/action market) to figure out how to go about putting together a sound pitch, also take some time to look in on how things are progressing for the apparently anonymous amateur author of Writer@Large, "A weblog dedicated to my efforts in the field of writing. Currently, it records my efforts in submitting to the new Marvel EPIC line" If there are many pitfalls to be encountered in dealing with EPIC light, it’s likely that you’ll here about them here.

Supersized 06/19/03

Jay D'ici Interviews the guys @ Oni Press.

Joe: "After a bad experience working for another company, I decided I'd only put my best effort into something that I owned. While having a talk with friend of the family who is a successful business man, I mentioned what bad shape the comic industry was in. He said that that was the time to enter an industry. It's cheaper to get in and you make a bigger splash. Bob Schreck was going nuts at Dark Horse, so I approached him with the idea and he and I decided to start Oni."

Jamie: "With the pop element, I think there are certain things that are universal and will always remain popular. Like, we've had great success with love stories, which never go out of fashion. But, we don't really worry about trends, overall. You will drive yourself crazy trying to chase the popularity train. You'll just end up looking like a johnny-come-lately chancer, since particularly in comics, with the long lead-time, the trend might be over before you even get a book out."

GARY GROTH GIVES MORE DETAILS OF FANTAGRAPHICS FINANCIAL SITUATION

The comics industry woke up today to a startling call for help: "Fantagraphics, one of the pillars of alternative comics publishing and a star of the bookstore revolution, was revealed to be in severe financial hardship, and was calling on readers to buy books to give them an immediate cash influx to help them get past the crunch."

By Heidi MacDonald

Saving Fantagraphics: "Fantagraphics has been in business for 27 years, formed around the critical magazine The Comics Journal. As they put it, "we are proud of our long-term commitment to comics as an art form and our dogged determination to push excellence down everybody's throats."

by Warren Ellis

...So the good news is there is light at the end of the tunnel, but don't let that stop you from ordering a few books, every bit helps. And if you are an artist, publisher or seller of comix, consider buying and add in the Journal.

::: Luc Giard, roi du web (king of the Web)

Over at the MG web site, Jimmy has taken a few moments to update the galleries of some of the artists working with him in the Mécanique Générale Collective.

In particular in his latest news update he calls attention to the work of Luc Giard , one of his mentors, and in his opinion he and Benoît are "En fait, je les considére comme les deux plus grands artistes vivants au Québec” Two of the greatest living artists in Québec. In his latest posting he tells us that Luc’s work can not truly be judged by his work in comics alone, one would have to go to his Studio and look through the piles of work strewn about as though they were rags. He is prolific and in Jimmy’s opinion, a profound talent. You can judge for yourself by dropping by his web page and flipping through a few of the choice rags Jimmy has scanned and mounted there.

There are selections of work sorted out by the categories of à la maison 'at home’ - portraits et autres 'portraits & others’ - pitounes 'women’ - charres 'cars’ - she wanted a future - un monsieur en janvier 'a Mr in January’

& more.

Whether you agree with Jimmy or not, it is undisputable that Luc is one of best artists working in QC today, and that he does indeed transcend medium and form, his is the work of an highly accomplished artist, sans qualifiers.

Things are settling down for him now so expect to see more of him around here, he’ll be involved in getting a French language version of Sequential up and running, and as well as his column, is threatening to start a personal blog for his more casual musings. ::: On Saving Fantagraphics

Over at Art Bomb Warren Ellis returns to Brainpowered this week with a few choice words on the current crisis the Indy comix institution is currently going through. Warren and his many readers had a big roll in the recovery of Top Shelf last year. This time around he’s calling for the same sort of response on Fantagraphics behalf, and explains (if you need it to be) the very good reasons for why this should happen. Also I personally liked the way he framed the subject of Fantagraphics relationship with comics specialty shops on this mater.
