:: Posted by max @ 8/31/2003 04:19:00 PM

Martin Redmond is a Montreal video-game designer who wants to draw comics and he's a finalist in the international comic-art competition.

Hosted by CBR new art is posted Wednesdays from the contestants and voted on by the fans.

The Montreal Gazette is running a piece on the local boy here and you can read about and follow the contest on the CBR site here

More details from Rocking Raven.com

:: Posted by max @ 8/31/2003 01:43:00 AM
"Major fun news

Rocking Raven comics (aka Haida Manga) is selected as part of the Canada National Design Team exhibit at the prestigious Tokyo Design Week Oct 9-23.

The Tokyo Design Week is the worldest fourth largest and fastest growing international design fair. 36 countries and 650,000 visitors will mark this years' first ever Canadian presence.

I have created a special piece for Tokyo consisting of 14 panels on large paper sheets. As well Rocking Raven goes Fishing will be available as a comic book at the exhibit venue, the Canadian Embassy gallery Oct 12-23.

Influenced by the argillite pipe carving tradition I again present a telling of an old Haida narrative. Yes it is strange, even twisted and as the British museum said the work "is slightly disturbing" I think Sophia Books in Vancouver accurately called Rocking Raven a "peu grotesque".

Email me if you would like an jpg sample."

the Canadian National Comic Book Expo - a beif report by Salgood Sam

:: Posted by max @ 8/31/2003 01:23:00 AM
I attended the Canadian National Comic Book Expo in Toronto this August for a few hours on the 8th while in town visiting family.

Had a look around, watched Jedi squabble over bags and bards, an overanxious artists try to steal a table from the CBLDF and got a signed HULK poster from Lou Ferrigno, who refuses to arm wrestle his fans.

It was a small but hopping fan fest, more so than what I would think of as an EXPO really. Publisher booths noticeably missing [SARS chikens] it still had the same feel as the wizard con in Chicago this August. Wished I had more time to hang out with folks in artist ally, LOT OF ANIMAY, amongst the small press even.

Hmm, not sure how I feel about that. Nothing against animay so much as the half assed jumping on the bandwagon feel to some of it. Missed the variety of genre in the Toronto zine scene - but then this may have simply been a question of not being an alt con. A more accurate picture of that side of the Toronto comix community would likely be found at TCAF or one of Toronto’s many zine fairs.

There were meetings and screenings, panels and monologs in small rooms on the first floor, and the main floor was on the second. You entered there via an escalator and emerged on the fringes of an incredibly crowded scene. A third or so of the floor was in costume, many of the remainder in themed close [T, bags & hats with characters and logos]. The geek patrol was out as always showing their strength in numbers. In general, though I overheard a fair amount of crabbing I think it looked to be a fun event, on Saturday afternoon anyway - Though a bit cramped.

Had interesting chats with a few people and Dave Ross relayed to me his suspicions that all was not well at CrossGen; a hunch based on less then logical reasons for the cancelling of a project he had just singed on to. Shortly after the news caught up with the grape vine.

Picked up zines & comix from a number of folks that I hope to find time to talk about. Much thanks go to James Armstrong for setting up a table for me at the con that I failed to show up to use, next year I’ll plan a proper visit. The family thanks you & your wife for the passes.

Saw a few local doodlers at the Expo. Sirkowski of Miss Dynomite was there with his latest zine, Miss.Dynamite Special Edition #1. Weighing in at 44 pages of “all new material” by 20 artists (including Sirkowski).

Also finally met Azad in person had a brief chat and made a promise to hook up some time in MT.

And finally on my way out the door I ran into my cousin Josh with his 3d slr camera, crazy thing! Good to see him after so many years.

A report with pics on the Canadian National Comic Book Expo this past week in Toronto by walter dickinson

:: Posted by max @ 8/31/2003 12:29:00 AM
this pulled from the TJC

"walter dickinson: I attended the Canadian National Comic Book Expo with several other Toronto artists promoting our anthology "Frecklebean Comics and Stories" (contributors include R.G. "Wordsmith" Taylor, Walter Dickinson, Sean Menard, Rob "Ragmop" Walton, Noel Tuazon, Ron Kasman and Dominic Bugatto).

The con was generally a pleasant experience and we were quite happy for the table space, but overall it was slated towards a more mainstream audience. We moved about 20 copies of our book and we had an excellent space back to back with Ken Steacy and Leonard Kirk."

Here are some pics of several of our contributors:

Sean Menard and Walter Dickinson

Noel Tuazon and R.G. Taylor

Dave Cullen and Sean Menard (again)

Here is a pic of our book Frecklebean Comics and Stories and several other books by local Toronto talents we like

("Death to Manga" by Noel Tuazon, "Mother May I" by Sarah Young and Willow Dawson and "That Thing You Fall Into" by Ignatz nominated mini comics artist Diana Tamblyn). You can get copies of Death to Manga and the Frecklebean Comics and Stories anthology by inquiring at frecklebeancomics@yahoo.com

Another local talent in attendance was Sarah Young who has put together "Mother May I" with her collaborator Willow Dawson.

Rocking Raven in the press

:: Posted by max @ 8/27/2003 04:21:00 PM

Vancouver Sun article Saturday Aug 23-2003

"Yahgulanaas proves that comic books are an ideal platform for an activist.From his first publication, A Tale of TWo Shamans, in 2001, to his forthcoming volume, The War of the Blink, Yahgulanaas consistently pushes the political envelope."

"His Haida manga cartoons have impressed readers locally and overseas, where academics are preparing to translate his work for the Japanese press."

"Yahgulanaas' second comic, The Last Voayge of the Black Ship, has been dubbed as "artifact" by B.C.'s Museum of Anthroplogy and is now held behind a glass case, much to the amusement of Yahgulanaas himself"

Jack Kirby Heroes Thrive in Comic Books and Film

:: Posted by max @ 8/27/2003 03:45:00 PM
On the eve of the late great Jack Kirby’s birthday [he would have been 86th] Elvis Mitchell pays tribute to his legacy in the New York Times.

“Kirby, a prolific writer and illustrator whose bold and sculptured hero drawings have been emulated for decades, died in 1994. Tomorrow would have been his 86th birthday. He had an enduring influence on comics, but he left his stamp on the movies, too. There he is survived by many of his creations and by films that used his work as a starting point.”

And appropriately I think, after all his years of grandstanding and taking all the credit, not one mention of Stan the man here.

[14 août 2003] care of the MG news page

Nursing a bad back, Jimmy Beaulieu has posted a series of drawing of swimming beauties on the MG site, here//ici. You’ll find them linked off his site under the section “comix / en apnée à Nassau” along with many other (not so) small collections of his drawings and a few stories.

The drawings were originally gathered to be put out as a monograph but funds and interest waned so he gives them to the world wide web to swim in the data streams.

Also he takes a moment to tell us a bit more about the upcoming Plan cartésien.

For starts, the contribution by Luc Giard for the book overflowed in bounty and in order to accommodate it, it will be published in a sister book of it’s own, titled ‘Le pont du havre’.

Both books are slated to go to press this September. I better get the lettering for HelpLess en français pasted up!

And finaly he lets us know that he will be teaching a workshop [in French I assume] on comic strips at the collège du Vieux Montréal in September, you can write him about it if you wish to attend. mg@pastis.org

Rocking Raven on gallery walls here in Canada and big in Japan

:: Posted by max @ 8/18/2003 09:10:00 AM
BC Haida artists Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas, author of ‘A Tale of Two Shaman’ [2001] & ‘The Last Voyage of the Black Ship’ [2002] Is getting some favourable attention as of late. The Museum of Anthropology, located on the University of BC campus in Vancouver, is hosting a special exhibition this summer showing all the original paintings and sketches from Michael’s most recent published Graphic Novel "The Last Voyage of the Black Ship", work they purchased from him in whole for their collection earlier this year. If you're in Vancouver, maybe attending the COMICON august 24th at the Heritage Hall 3102 Main Street Vancouver, make a point of going out to the Museum of Anthropology. It will encourage them to continue their new found interest in comic books.

Later this year in October Michael’s Rocking Raven art is going to be on exhibit in Japan! The Canadian Consulate gallery is the venue- The event in the Tokyo Design 2003, an international and annual event showcasing international design concepts. The Bark Design Collective selected 24 pieces out of the 75 submissions based on the mandate to "exhibited a sense of provocative design worthy of international exposure".

Michael received a call for submission for the selection of pieces for the Canadian exhibit at the Tokyo Design show…

“I filled it out, made a case that Japan loves Manga and that what I’m doing is not usual. Made the deadline and made the grade”

His art will be on display as a large banner poster with the images also presented as a booklet. The booklet will be laid out for photocopy press and given away to all who attend the show-

Also Michael was contacted by a representative of a group of Japanese Academics wishing to translate his books into Japanese and arrange for sales in large chain stores!

Congrats Michael

The profit in comic strips

:: Posted by max @ 8/02/2003 11:58:00 AM
An article on CBS marketplace’s web site discusses at length the current stat of affairs for newspaper strips from the publishers & artists POV.

Focusing mostly on the United Media syndicate, there are a lot of quotes here from 'Dilbert' creator Scott Adams here.

Interesting lay of the land if you’re interested in doing newspaper strips at all. A bit amusing to hear Scott compare himself artistically to Garry Trudeau (?!). One thing that struck me was, at one point he cops to self-censoring his strips, taking out words like ‘buttocks’ to keep the strip ‘tasteful’…..buttocks! how shocking! All to avoid clashes with editors with names like Stern – it’s a bad Cheech and Chong joke I tell ya!…. I doubt that anyone involved with this article sees this as a core problem with the funny pages these days.
