Guy Reviews Alex Ross's new Superman book...

"Something we indie fans forget sometimes, digesting the recent glut of literary comics that render life's mundanities with pathological naturalism, is the very thing that got us reading comics as kids. To wit, the cool factor. That feeling of being transported to some mystical plane, where global cataclysms are as quotidian as a schnauzer spraying a lamppost, and narrowly averted (the cataclysm, not the dog piss) by the heroism of muscled men in red briefs. We're above that stuff, right? Too sophisticated.">>>

"There's a saying about the debut album by the Velvet Underground, the '67 Warhol/Eno/Reed concoction with the peeling-banana cover: that everyone who bought the record went on to start their own band...">>>

The m@b newsletter For January 2004

CBC.ca FEATURE ON M@B

Just before the fifth anniversary of the m@b, Dan Brown of CBC.ca sat down with me to do a nice little profile on me and the comic. The feature has been up for over a month and has has helped introduce the comic to a whole new audience of readers.  There has also been a few other pieces on m@b recently, and you can find all the links on the m@b web site.

WEST COAST BOOK TOUR FEB. 9-16I will be lucky enough to exchange the blustery winter of Toronto for the mild and temperate climate of the West Coast this February when I hit the road to promote Wide Collar Crimes, the collection of 8 m@b issues from 2000-2002.  I am taking part in my second Perpetual Motion Roadshow, an indie publishing tour circuit.

M@B AT APE: San Francisco, Feb. 21-22

I will be attending my fourth Alternative Press Expo in San Francisco on Saturday and Sunday Feb. 21-22. The event takes place at the Concourse Event Centre, the same place as last year.  I will have Wide Collar Crimes, the new issue "This was a tough decision", back issues, T-shirts and pins for sale.

M@B IN 2004

As an independent publisher I'm lucky enough to dictate my own schedule.  My current thinking has a new m@b issue in the Spring (April-ish). I am also working on a collection of long m@b stories that should be completed by the end of 2004. I will continue to publish weekly strips for Eye.

SPACING MAGAZINE

Some local Toronto people may be aware that I am part of a group called the Toronto Public Space Committee. We just released a magazine called Spacing, Toronto's answer to fighting the ever advancing privatization of our public spaces.  I am the Creative Director of the mag and was responsible for the layout and art direction. If this piques your interest check out our site. If you live in Toronto try and pick up an issue (a list of stores is on the site).

MATT B FOR HIRE

Lastly, I've become a self-employed graphic artist over the last year (read the last comic in my current issue to find out why). I do many things other than comics. If this of is any interest to you, check out my portfolio at my Matt B Media web site.
