Véhicule Press featured as publisher of the month by Canadian bookseller Northwest Passages

Online Canadian bookseller Northwest Passages have chosen montreal indipendent publisher Véhicule Press as its feature publisher. You can read an interview with co-publisher Simon Dardick on their site, scroll down to "February 18, 2004 - Véhicule Press"



"NWP: Tell us a bit about the history of Véhicule Press. You've been publishing books for over 30 years now, a tremendous accomplishment for any publisher. How has the press changed in 30 years and what do you see in store for its future?



SD: We grew out of an artist-run gallery in 1973 called Véhicule Art Inc. The press started in the back of the gallery—a wonderful large space with 20-foot-high ceilings on St. Catherine Street East near St. Lawrence Boulevard that was once the Café Montmarte night club in the 1940s and fifities. We printed for artists and galleries and books for small literary presses. We were Québec’s only co-operatively-owned printing and publishing outfit. On leftover paper from customers’ jobs we would print our own publications. Mostly poetry and artists’ books. So right from the beginning, perhaps because of our relationship with artists, the design aspect of our books became very important. ">>>
