The Beguiling : Sale, Roadshow, Artshow, Jodorowski! From: The Beguiling www.nathanj.com.auSent: August 12, 2004 8:32 PM August Mailing! Hi there folks, welcome to our August mailing. We’re in a bit of a rush this time out, both figuratively and literally. Figuratively because we’re promoting at least one event that’s less than 24 hours away, the very cool new Scarygirl show at Magic Pony. Litterally, because I leave for Wizardworld Chicago in like, 2 hours, and I’m not even packed yet… Ah, but you don’t wanna hear about any of my troubles. You want to hear about cool events, and SALES!, and be reminded of other cool events and SALES! we told you about last time, right? Right? Well then keep reading, ‘pard. INDEX 1. NOT A SECRET SALE: August 20-23 2. Perpetual Motion Roadshow Rolls On To Toronto 3. “Forests Have Feelings Too” at Magic Pony 4. REMINDER: Jodorowsky is coming to Toronto! 5. REMINDER: Alternative Comics Benefit Sale 6. REMINDER: Harbourfront Reading Series with Adrian Tomine 7. REMINDER: TCAF Update 8. Secret: 1. BEGUILING NOT-SO-SECRET SALE FRIDAY AUGUST 20th, SATURDAY AUGUST 21st, SUNDAY AUGUST 22nd, MONDAY AUGUST 23rd @ THE BEGUILING So, you’re saving money for the big, end-of-August convention, are ya? THINK AGAIN. We’ve got to move some comics, manga, and anime, and buddy, are you gonna get a deal. In further preparation for renovations to the second floor, we’re holding a sale on much of the second-floor product. Here the deals: - All 50-cent bin comics are 25 cents. Buy over 100 books, we pay the tax too! - All $1 bin comics are tax included! In addition, there are TONS of new $1 bin titles. - All back-issue bin comics are 50% off the sticker price. We have restocked the bins since our last sale, so you’ll be pretty-much guaranteed to find something to your liking. - All wall comics (ie: single comics hanging on the wall, all books behind the counter on the wall on the second floor) are 30% off the sticker price. Still can’t afford to buy old comics? All of the old reprint comics on the reprint rack (DC, EC, and more) are 30% off too! - Select trade paperbacks will be 20% off. Which ones will be selected? You’ll have to show up to find out, but trust me when I say we will be casting a very wide net. - All manga, we pay the tax! In addition, select manga titles will be up to 70% off the regular price! - All anime, we pay the tax! - All T-Shirts, including the new Giant Robot and Diesel Sweeties shirts, we pay the tax! In addition, should the weather be nice on those days (and one of the employees feels like sitting outside), we will be setting up sales on the front steps/courtyard of the store. If you really love digging through crap to find gems, this will be event for you. 2. PERPETUAL MOTION ROADSHOW IN TORONTO Yes, it’s time once again for the PERPETUAL MOTION ROADSHOW, a very cool event run by Jim Munroe of No Media Kings, spotlighting great creative talent (and driving them across North America. Always a very good time, we highly recommend you show up. Perpetial Motion Roadshow: Toronto Thursday August 19th, 8PM Holy Joe’s, 651 Queen St. W. Pay-What-You-Can Featuring Poet, Librarian, and Sex Educator Megan Butcher, Author Bucky Sinister, and Toronto’s very own comic artist and good-girl, Willow Dawson. Music by Blue Venus. See ya there…! More Info: http://www.nomediakings.com 3. FORESTS HAVE FEELINGS TOO, @ MAGIC PONY Here’s a note from our friends at Magic Pony, regarding a very cool new art show opening TODAY (Friday!). Make sure you get out to see it. Their last launch, for Mike Comeau’s REGAL BEAST 2 (now available at The Beguiling) was, in the parlance of the times, _off_the_hook_, this promises to be as good. "Forests Have Feelings Too" A solo show with Nathan Jurevicius (Creator of Scarygirl) Opening Reception: Friday August 13, 7-11pm Location: Magic Pony, 785 Queen St. W, Second Floor, Toronto August 13-September 18, 2004 Forests have Feelings Too is a solo exhibition with Nathan Jurevicius. This very special event marks Nathan¹s first North American Solo exhibition. The show will run from August 13-September 18. The opening reception will be held on Friday August 13 from 7-11pm at the Magic Pony Shop and Gallery. The exhibit will highlight Nathan¹s entire line of vinyl figures and artwork ranging from hand-drawn sketches to original canvases. In addition to this, Magic Pony and Nathan will be releasing a special figure set at the opening. This set will be limited to 100 pieces. Each set will contain original prints, two special figures, a customized set of stickers and more secret items. This exhibit is also unique because it will include an instillation piece that incorporates figures customized by 90 different artists of all ages and skill levels. Nathan will be in attendance at the show. More info: www.magic-pony.com www.scarygirl.com 4. Rue Morgue & Daniloff Productions Present: Alejandro Jodorowski The Beguiling is proud to be co-sponsoring with Rue Morgue Magazine an appearance by noted comics author and filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowski on Sunday, August 29th at The Bloor Cinema. Jodorwski is renown for his graphic albums METABARONS, THE INCAL, and TECHNOPRIESTS, but is also a respected filmmaker. Jodorowski will be in attendance for the screenings of two of his films, and you can find out more about the entire event at http://www.hotweird.com/jodorowsky. 5. REMINDER: Alternative Comics Benefit Sale As you may have read online, publisher Alternative Comics is going through some rough financial times right now, mostly stemming out of the same financial constraints that affected Top Shelf and Drawn & Quarterly a few years back. To help out Alternative Comics in their time of need, we’ve decided to have a 25% off sale on all in-stock books published by Alternative Comics! See, we already stock (fairly deeply) on all of their titles, so just ordering more would create something of a stock nightmare for us. If we sell you the books though, we have good reason to place a big healthy order with Alternative and hopefully net them a lot of dough. We’ve set up a rack on the second floor (near the Fantagraphics and manga) that features every Alternative Comics publication in the store, which is actually most of them. The more we sell, the more we’ll order back in. The sale lasts for as long as people are interested so that we can just keep turning over Alternative Comics product. Come on in and support a good publisher by treating yourself to a good comic book. 6. REMINDER: Harbourfront Reading Series: Adrian Tomine As part of Harbourfront’s Reading Series this year, Harbourfront will be presenting appearances by numerous excellent comics creators. First up, Harbourfront is pleased to welcome Adrian Tomine on Wednesday, September 22nd at 7:30pm at the Brigantine Room. Adrian will be doing a presentation of his works from Optic Nerve. For more information, visit http://www.readings.org/eventsDetail.php?eventID=537 . Also just confirmed for Harbourfront’s Festival Of Authors is author and designer Chip Kidd. We’re really looking forward to both Adrian and Chip’s return to Toronto, and we strongly encourage all of our customers to go out and support these events. 7. REMINDER: Toronto Comic Arts Festival Update The Toronto Comic Arts Festival homepage has been updated at http://www.torontocomics.com/tcaf. It contains the dates for the next event (Memorial Day weekend, 2005) as well as a preview of Marc Bell’s poster art for next year’s event. The site will be updated frequently as we confirm more details, make sure to check back soon! 8. Secret: SCOTT PILGRIM DROPS NEXT WEEK As a reward for reading all the way to the end of this e-mail, I’m gonna tell you about SCOTT PILGRIM. The new graphic novel from Toronto artist Bryan Lee O’Malley (LOST AT SEA) is coming out next Wednesday, and it is really, really good. Set in the city of Toronto, Scott is a permanent couch-surfer at his gay-best-friend’s bachelor apartment. He’s dating a high-school girl. He’s in a band that sucks/rocks named SEX BOB-OMB! And then the perfect girl for him rollerskates _directly_ out of his dreams, and destroys what precious little security he thought he had. Cue dance-sequences, flying hipster-demons, and air-juggling. If any of this makes any sense to you at all, then this will be the comic you have always dreamed of. Why are we hyping this? Well, aside from the fact that Bryan was, for a time, an employee of The Beguiling, we’re going to be hosting the launch party for the book really soon. The Details haven’t been finalized yet, but suffice to say it will be awesome and, to be honest, completely inescapable. Hype will be everywhere for the book/party, and we want you mailing list peeps to be able to say “dude, I read it first”. And you will want to say that. So drop by the store next Wednesday, check out SCOTT PILGRIM VOLUME ONE: SCOTT PILGRIM’S PRECIOUS LITTLE LIFE, get an invite to the party, and enjoy “one of the best books of the year”.
