Christopher Butcher asks why bother?

Toronto Comics columnist, web publisher and staffer at The Beguiling asks what’s the point? Why do it?…



"...I have a customer at the store who is a writer for one of the comics newsmagazine websites. You know, reviews, creator interviews, message board, 'exclusive' art and the occasional bit of hype-as-news reporting. He mentioned that he was probably going to have to leave that site for some reason, I can't remember why, and he was considering starting up his own brand-new site. It would have a broader focus, more comics and/as popular culture, that sort of thing…"



The post is an open letter to all of us out here.

Why do it?

And who are you trying to reach with your material,

and what are you doing to reach that audience?

What is your focus?

What are your columnists saying that isn't being said,

your reviewers reviewing that isn't being reviewed?



Basically he asks questions that I suspect any journalism professor or senior editor, publisher, or A.D. at a large professional magazine or paper would approve of. I personally think theses are things important to think about if you want to maintain high standards regardless of the subject of any site. Both to help motivate you to seek out content that is otherwise not being covered, either at all or in a manor that you would like to see, & to maintain some kind of coherent overall presentation.



Usually the answers to these sorts of questions as well as others like them result in the foundational material for a mission statement for your publication and in the design bible for the visuals.
