NATIONAL POST: He's back!: He's an RCMP officer by day and a superhero the rest of the time! Brandon boy revives '70s comic book with Captain Canuck

When creating a superhero, few comic-book writers allow the words "RCMP" and "Moose Jaw" to creep into their thoughts, let alone onto the page. But for Riel Langlois, the force behind Captain Canuck: Unholy War, such Canadianisms are integral to the creative process.

Langlois's three-part series -- a revamped version of the original 1975 Captain Canuck by Richard Comely -- hit stores this week, after two years in the making. And there was so much buzz among those in the comic-book know, some copies never even made it to the rack.

"I put one aside for myself as soon as the order came in to make sure I got one," said Toby Orr of Silver Snail Comics on Toronto's trendy Queen Street West. "There's been some buzz about it for awhile -- I had a couple of friends actually call me at work and ask, 'Is it true there's another Captain Canuck coming out?'

Disturbo.com update:

"Check out the cover illustration I did for a pretty cool lefty magazine called Canadian Dimension- they describe themselves as: "An independent forum for debate on a broad range of issues of interest to the left."and even super-icon Noam Chomsky weighs in: "With the world veering from one potential catastrophe to another, in many different domains, it has never been more important to have clear, critical thinking and analysis that is not restricted by dominant ideologies. CD has performed that function very effectively, a contribution of unusual importance." - dan@dstrbo.com

Depression stalks those with MS: Mike Augustine has battled the disease's darkness, and emerged full of optimism and humour, MICHAEL VALPY writes.

By MICHAEL VALPY in theglobeandmail.com

Wednesday, September 29, 2004

"Mike Augustine, in his second year at Ontario's Sheridan College studying graphic arts and animation, woke one morning in the guest room of his girlfriend's parents' home with his feet tingling. The sensation quickly spread up both legs, into his chest and down into his arms and fingers. It was Valentine's Day, 1992. He was 22 years old. He was terrified" ... "Mr. Augustine said he is now on the lip of achieving his dream, to be a newspaper comic-strip cartoonist. He has developed a one-panel cartoon, which he will soon submit to a publishing syndicate, that looks with humour at people's problems."

RabbitHead Named Best Comic Book of 2004

The Georgia Straight, Vancouver's biggest entertainment paper names RabbitHead (Alternative Comics, ISBN 1-891867-72-5, DCD FEB04 2052) as the "Best Comic Book" for 2004 in its annual "Best of Vancouver" issue dated Sept. 23rd."Rebecca Dart's RabbitHead (Alternative Comics) is an ambitious, layered, and ultimately heart-rending tale full of wonder and whimsy. There aren't many comics creators in this city producing such complex, demanding work, and the fact that Dart also delivers an emotional bite in this surreal tale of strange but recognizable creatures makes RabbitHead a small miracle".See the article on-line: straight.comFor more information see: www.indyworld.com/dart

EDMONTON SUN: Drawing power!

by ERIK FLOREN

Two of North America's more successful cartoonists have showcased Edmonton to the world for years. Gary Delainey and Gerry Rasmussen are the creative duo behind the popular international comic strip, Betty. Seen in more than 100 newspapers around the globe, the comic strip's artwork frequently features local colour like West Edmonton Mall, Whyte Avenue or Oilers jerseys. Since both Rasmussen and Delainey were born and bred and still reside in Edmonton, that's not so surprising. But what is amazing is that our local colour seems to play well in other countries as diverse as Denmark and Pakistan.
