Hotel Canzine: Canada's Largest Zine Fair and Festival of Alternative Culture

Sunday, October 17, 2004 1pm-7pm at The Gladstone Hotel 1214 Queen Street West Toronto, Canada Free admission - All Welcome!

Canzine is [one of, contrary to claims made on their site, it's not the only one] Toronto's annual zine fairs, the bigest. A festival of alternative culture featuring over 150 underground periodicals on display from across Canada. Don't miss our radical film and reading events, room of sin, and hands-on workshops. Video Open Screening and Curated programAll are welcome to bring videos (VHS or DVD only, 10 minutes and under) to show to the world. Register in advance by emailing canzinevideo@brokenpencil.com. Or just show up with your film. Indie film program curated by BP film editor Zev Asher.

Hotel CanzineSome of Toronto's brightest and weirdest will be creating environments for our Canzine guests to explore. Utilizing hotel rooms at the Gladstone, these will be wild, wacky places to check in to and check out.



5 Rooms including: The Shangers (ShangersCove.org). Crazy indie pirates. Join them to find out about starting your own pirate culture group and watch out - they'll be staging raids of Canzine throughout the day and forcing indie poseurs to walk the plank! New pirates wanted! Blocks Recording Club. Audiophile indiacs will be releasing a new CD EVERY single hour at Canzine! Drop by their room to find out how and be part of the experience! Plus Sandy Plotnikoff, Tiger Press novelty mini books and action dolls, and the "soft art" of Magda Wojtyra.



Radical Reading SeriesReadings from great indie writing talent: Sonja Ahlers - Launching her new book Fatal Distraction at Canzine! The graphic novel follow up to cult classic Temper, Temper, explores the themes of obsession, drugs, rock and roll and copycats - fatal distractions from this Vancouver creator. Greg Kearney - Presenting stories from his new short story collection Mommy, Daddy, Baby. The Xtra columnist's unique take on the domestic is like nothing you've ever read! Alexandra Legatt Canada's new indie gothic writing queen. Brian Francis, reading from a novel about a boy and his nipples.



Hands-on WorkshopsHour-long demos are hosted by Canada's best indie culture workers.

How to Shamelessly Promote Yourself - the editors of Shameless -- Canada's new indie magazine for teen girls - tell all about their shameless efforts to get attention!



Silk Screening for Beginners - Veteran indie printer and underground publisher Michael Comeau instructs on silk-screening zine covers, posters, t-shirts and more!
