Globe trotting Montreal cartoonist Jack Ruttan reports in from Thailand Comix Show

:: Posted by max @ 11/12/2004 04:42:00 PM
A month ago local doodler and friend Jack Ruttan contacted me about a group show of Montreal comix artists he was organizing in Thailand with film maker Peter Mantello at the Tadu contemporary art gallery. He picked up 3 images from 15 local artists and personally escorted them and a stack of our books to the show as our envoy. Here is a report from him early this week…

Hi all,

My health is dodgy, but the first workshop was popular. About 31 artists ranging from elderly silhouette artists to toddlers, including in that range hordes of Manga kids, and Japanese girl graphic artists. Next week we do stories, and Photoshop. Also, I am trying to establish Comic Jam Thailand. Got lots of interviews in the local media, which I will be able to pass on in clips later, plus wild images of the expo, and many strange pictures of myself, who was a popular subject.

Sold most of the books I brought, so am looking at how to get more shipped over (someone please tell Billy!)

Gosh, I hope you're all getting these messages. The exhibition looks spectacular and has attracted a lot of attention! The gallery turns out to be one of the top contemporary art galleries in town (very strange art scene here).

Well, I've finished most of the hard work, and can relax, and perhaps get things such as e-mail more organized. I'm getting interviewed by the local manage magazine, and will get a view of the local scene. Most of the people I've met are pretty cool artists with great techniques, but there are still things I can share with them.

If this continues going well, there are a couple of possibilities: 1) The show will travel over other parts of Asia such as Vietnam and Singapore. I don't know if I can go with it. 2) We might come back next year, with a group of artists! (so keep your fingers crossed, but none of this is decided yet)

The brochure for the exhibit is a big plastic-laminated affair, and features full colour pics & bios of all the artists and their works [Scans to come latter]. Also press clips for your dossiers (never a bad thing for an artist). You lucky sods! Though I'm the luckiest, at the moment.

He’s also started posting reports on his blog Utopia Moment and promises that photos are soon to come.
