Pastel World Association organizes an international strip-cartoon contest

24-05-2004 (UNESCO)

Pastel World, a Geneva-based association, launches a strip-cartoon contest for all young artists, schools of art and drawing of all the countries in the world, proposing the First World Summit on the Information Society as its platform. This is an innovative project aiming at reducing the digital divide.

The first stage of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), which was held in Geneva in the end of 2003, revealed the growing digital divide between the developed countries and the others. It is becoming urgent to re-inverse this tendency. This is the objective of the strip-cartoon contest on the information society, developed by the Pastel World Association, open to all young artists, schools of art and drawing of all the countries in the world.

The aims of the contest are many:• to raise awareness of the young about unequal access to information;

• to make the young from developing countries to pay interest to this domain;

• to reveal original ideas or existing blockages.

PWA plans to publish winning works and to turn them into an awareness and promotion tool for the projects aiming at reducing the digital divide. An itinerant exhibition, which could be used with the same objective, is envisaged. PWA will also analyse received projects and extract the ideas to be particularly developed.

From now on, PWA has the support of several international organizations, led by Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO, who is sponsoring the project.

The Monthly Montreal Comix Jam 3.5

:: Posted by max @ 5/25/2004 09:48:00 PM
The monthly comix jam for May will be taking place this Wednesday the 26th at 8pm. You host this month will be jam master Jesse Bochner [seen to the right here]. What's that you say? The site says it's supposed to be Susanne Larner. Well, due to some 'inter-provincial mismanagement' Sussanne has been lost in a corn field in Ontario. But she was able to use her Black ops sat gear to arrange a swap, which works out nicely apparently as will Jesse be in the middle of the Baltic Sea making out with heiresses and middle-aged debutantes on the date of his originally Scheduled Hosting date latter this year. So all's well that ends well. And those of you who know mister Bochner know we are in good hands.

Once more we have a star in our midst this month! A real live Fantagraphics published guy! :)

Local cartoonist Alex Fellows will be signing copies of his new graphic novel 'CANVAS' at the Jam! See the jam site here for more details on this.

As usual you'll find a few dozens doodlers and friends hanging out at Sala Rosa all night - 4848 boul. St-Laurent, Montreal - drawing comix, shooting the poop, and hocking their zines to one another and you.

If you publish a zine and plan to attend we encourage to you bring some copies to set out on your own table or the merch table if there's room [space is first come first serve. If you notify us in advance with details of you zine we will post the info on the Sequential news blog and the comix group here for you.

As always the jam is free to all, participation is encouraged. Bring your pens, friends and imaginations.

the MMCJ is brought to you buy Marmælade

THE GAZETTE: Comics as social commentary

Peanuts was the most influential comic strip of the 20th century; tom tomorrow lampoons U.S. politics; mutts eloquently celebrates the diversity of life on earth

by Claude Lalumiere

Since the late 19th century, when Richard Outcault's Hogan's Alley began appearing in the New York Sunday World, comic strips have been mainstays of newspaper publishing. In its heyday, the newspaper comic strip was a popular venue for many genres, including surrealism, adventure, science fiction and detective stories. Once an art form renowned for its high standard of draughtsmanship, it is now mostly a joke-driven medium with little place for artistic accomplishment.-->>

Hello les BéDénautes ...

Nouvelles

Some Stuff from the Toronto Comic Jam Discussion Group

Nadia posted this link to a page about riding the TTC in the Toronto Star by occasional Comic Jammer Christopher Hutsul. It's a PDF, so you'll need Acrobat to read it.

And if that inspires you to do your own gag comics, then this should be good news [also posted by Nadia]

From the latest issue of Maisonneuve:

"WANTED: Humorous illustrations and cartoons.

"Think snide and witty rather than cute and pretty. We look forward to your submissions."

Size: 3 x 3 inches

Prize: $50 per illustration

(should we find ourselves rolling on the floor in fits of laughter, gasping for breath)

Preference given to black & white illustrations."

There is a submissions guidelines page on their site here.

ED:I'm always weary when publishers describe it as a prize...But it's well red mag with international distribution so worth a shot at least.

'Revelation' points out that Dave Lapp has some illustrations featured in the Flaming Fire Illustrated Bible

CANVAS signing MAY 26th

:: Posted by max @ 5/14/2004 06:33:00 PM

Open up your hunky fireman calendar and put a big red X on WEDNESDAY MAY 26th, cuz that's when Xeric-award winning Fantagraphics cartoonist Alex Fellows will be signing copies of his new graphic novel 'CANVAS' at the Monthly Montreal Comix Jam!

What's 'CANVAS'? The story of a fourteen-year old girl born to a pig and a frog, who, during a camping trip, suffers the attraction of two young guys, goes on a shocking double date, and gets drunk for the first time. Her parents, despite their odd appearance, have a very typical fear of their daughter's new experiences. You will be compelled as you watch this teenage girl make decisions based on the only quality she's had time to develop: curiosity.

This event will take place from 7-10 p.m. at the very nice LA SALA ROSSA, situated at 4848 St-Laurent blvd.

I might sign body parts!

If these guys represent our national pride, we have a shitload of explaining to do.

both our countries are going to get a chance to spank our respective leaders this year.

Bush, Martin, YOU'RE FIRED.

two birds 5/14/04

I tried something a little different this week. I did a live painting performance for a Saidye Bronfman fundraiser last night, and just for fun decided to take the opportunity to try painting my cartoon. Interesting experiment, but I think I'll stick to what works from now on.

Alpha Flight Gets Off the Ground Again

By Sarrah Young

In its earlier incarnation, Alpha Flight was a progressive, fascinating comic starring the first-ever all-Canadian superhero team. So why is the Marvel remake turning us into such a joke? -->>

What I'm wondering is, why the hell don't they give the title to a Canadian creative team? At least they would know the anthem.

feh!

One of the most enigmatic characters in the Marvel universe has come clean. Gone is the wondering, forgotten are the debates, the time has come to settle this once and for all.

& DC Focus Marks Giant’s First Spinoff

In a time when characters are being reused to the point of exhaustion, DC has launched a new imprint based on ordinary people — an alterative to Superman and Batman. Along with Hard Time, three additional titles are being launched, each with dramatically different main characters.-->>

POP IMAGE INTERVIEW - Prison Fun With Chip Zdarsky

:: Posted by max @ 5/12/2004 12:42:00 PM
Chip Zdarsky, the living caricature and artist is the creator of PRISON FUNNIES, a cartoon strip and comic born out of his own experiences after a 30 day stint at a jail in Barrie, Ontario. The result of a harmless prank, Chip spent day after day crying his pussy ass to sleep on his lonely prison bed, just trying to control his ever loosening bodily functions. In an attempt to regain his already diminished sanity Chip poured his stories into sequential form so as to entertain others with his pain.

Chip took a few moments out of his shift at the local Taco Ville to take a call and talk about his COLLECTED PRISON FUNNIES, Jesus and STD's. --->>>

THE PANELIST : Johnny on the spot, Guy Leshinski profiles Angry Youth Comix creator Johnny Ryan

:: Posted by max @ 5/11/2004 02:04:00 AM
Co:eye weekly[05.06.04]

A few weeks ago, Guelph cartoonist Seth was giving a scripted talk on the art of comics to a worshipful crowd at the Rivoli. He accompanied himself with slides projected onto a screen behind him, ringing a bell between each slide like a performance-art concierge.

Once, he rang the bell and up slid the apple-red cover of Johnny Ryan's Angry Youth Comix -- a profoundly crass (and profoundly hilarious) series by one of comicdom's greatest slingers of smut. Beside Ryan's typical excretions -- a detective story called "Sherlock McRape," another about aliens whose words for ice cream and its toppings are heinous epithets -- this particular issue (No. 6) included a scalding parody of Seth and fellow anachronist Jason Little, trying to "out old-timey" each other in increasingly bizarre acts of desperation. Seth admitted that his publisher, which also publishes Ryan, had sent him a copy, but that he'd been too afraid to read it.

As usual, Ryan's cut had hit its mark. "I'm always glad to hear I'm annoying the uptight liberal prigs that are out there," says Ryan, his snark-rimed monotone bristling over the phone from LA.

Sheldon Cohen is in his element. It's half an hour after the last bell at St. Joseph's Elementary School in Montreal has sent the kids home to eat Pizza Pops in front of the tube. But two dozen of them are sticking around, cramming the school's slipshod art room and watching Sheldon like kittens watching a can opener. -->>

Canvas by Alex Fellows

:: Posted by max @ 5/07/2004 01:33:00 PM
A young fresh faced lad Alex Fellows started showing up at the monthly jams here in Montreal a few years back and impressing us all with his fine doodling and scatological loonyness [he did the drawing of the guy riding the giant pill on the MMCJ banner].

On a number of occasions he would tell us he was working on a graphic novel for Fantagraphics, to which we laughed and told him to get back to work, promptly whipping senseless. Well, here we are with egg on our faces. It turns out the boy way telling the truth all along! Hey, he even has a web site now! There, for a small sum, you can have one of your own ideas turned into a cartoon strip by Mr Fellows. So check it out, you'll be amused and maybe even slightly offended. Who could ask for anything more?

Here’s the blurb from the Fantagraphics site for Canvas

During a camping trip one weekend, Canvas, a fourteen-year old girl born to a pig and a frog, suffers the attraction of two young guys, goes on a shocking double date, and gets drunk for the first time. Her parents, despite their odd appearance, have a very typical fear of their daughter's new experiences. Hot, upstart cartoonist Alex Fellows (and Xeric Grant winner to boot) compels the reader with this teenage girl's decisions based on the only quality she's had time to develop: curiosity.

Sequential Tart hold a Free Comic Book Day roundtable

:: Posted by max @ 5/05/2004 07:54:00 AM
Marcia Allass talked to 19 shop owner/operators about the North American comics market promotion that has been running now for two years with favourable results over all [This year FCBD is on July 3rd, set to coincide with the opening of the Spider-Man 2 movie].

Most of the shops talked to were in the US, with the small [but mighty] Canadian comics market represented buy Christopher Butcher and Peter Birkemoe of The Beguiling in Toronto, & Calum Johnston of Strange Adventures in Halifax.

Seth on Richardsons Round Up

:: Posted by max @ 5/01/2004 03:06:00 PM
Seth was the guest on the CBC radio show Richardson's Roundup on 4/29/04 for a 20min interview in support of his upcoming books; his graphic novel CLYDE FANS BOOK ONE and his father's memoir BANNOCK, BEANS & BLACK TEA.

Starting off on the topic of suits and Seth's fashion choices, He and Bill Richardson had a good jaunty chat about his work and the things that drive it, working on these books and the Peanuts project, his family history & childhood, the seemingly universal nugget of ostracization that often leads to the path of cartooning [He’s got the bit about the roving mind of a drawing artist dead to rights for sure] and building cities in his basement. We are treated near the middle of it to a reading of an excerpt from BANNOCK, BEANS & BLACK TEA [read by Terence Kelly].

You can listen to the real audio online here in the archives [direct link to the audio]

While you’re there, you can listen to an earlier recent interview with Chester Brown
