Pradas woo the Pocket Protectors : Hollywood shops at San Diego

Pradas woo the Pocket Protectors

By JOHANNA SCHNELLER

'Geek chic," proclaimed the headline on the front page of a recent Weekly Variety. Peter Bart, the trade paper's vice-president and editor-in-chief, wrote, "The annual carnival at Comic-Con" -- the convention of comic-book fans, webheads and gamesters that this year drew 75,000 attendees to San Diego from July 22 to 25 -- "reminds us that while Internet geeks don't yet rule the world, they sure scare the hell out of Hollywood."

Hollywood has long been called "high school with money," and it's hilarious that these days, the cool kids are so actively courting the nerds -- the Pradas wooing the Pocket Protectors. The powers that be thank geeks for the $2.9-billion (U.S.) earned worldwide by The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and for Spider-Man 2's $650-million gross, not to mention I, Robot's $150-million so far, The Day After Tomorrow's $535-million, Van Helsing's $269-million, and even the $700-plus-million brought in by both Shrek 2 and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. They also credit geeks with starting Internet buzz, streaming to opening weekends, and shelling out for movie merchandise.--->>>

The Toronto Star on the Canadian National Expo

:: Posted by max @ 8/23/2004 06:29:00 PM
Conventional wisdom: In anticipation of Canada's largest sci-fi/fantasy/horror/comics/anime expo, we chat with some of the talent

It's every genre fan's four-in-one fantasy come true. Or at least as close as we can come short of chatting to Patrick Stewart on the phone while having lunch with Yasuyuki Ueda while Doug Bradley massages our feet and Alejandro Jodorowsky lovingly sketches us, and ... never mind.

When the Canadian National Expo takes over the Metro Toronto Convention Centre next weekend, the event will have something for the science fiction fan, the anime fan, the comic book fan and, new this year, the horror fan. The Rue Morgue Festival of Fear Horror Expo is ready to send tendrils of dread down your spine.

"Basically we have an entire guest list that they helped us put together and they're working hand-in-hand with us to tie it all in with the magazine (Rue Morgue).... There's an entire slate of events geared towards the horror fan with special screenings, parties and signings," says John Armstrong, the event co-ordinator for the Expo.--->>>

Quelques nouvelles de la nébuleuse mécanique

:: Posted by max @ 8/17/2004 02:15:00 AM

Co: Jimmy Beaulieu

Translate this into google english

Bonjour

Jimmy

3. FORESTS HAVE FEELINGS TOO, @ MAGIC PONY

Here’s a note from our friends at Magic Pony, regarding a very cool new art show opening TODAY (Friday!). Make sure you get out to see it. Their last launch, for Mike Comeau’s REGAL BEAST 2 (now available at The Beguiling) was, in the parlance of the times, _off_the_hook_, this promises to be as good.

"Forests Have Feelings Too"

A solo show with Nathan Jurevicius (Creator of Scarygirl)

Opening Reception:

Friday August 13, 7-11pm

Location: Magic Pony, 785 Queen St. W, Second Floor, Toronto

Forests have Feelings Too is a solo exhibition with Nathan Jurevicius. This very special event marks Nathan¹s first North American Solo exhibition. The show will run from August 13-September 18. 4. Rue Morgue & Daniloff Productions Present: Alejandro Jodorowski

The Beguiling is proud to be co-sponsoring with Rue Morgue Magazine an appearance by noted comics author and filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowski on Sunday, August 29th at The Bloor Cinema. Jodorwski is renown for his graphic albums METABARONS, THE INCAL, and TECHNOPRIESTS, but is also a respected filmmaker. Jodorowski will be in attendance for the screenings of two of his films, and you can find out more about the entire event at http://www.hotweird.com/jodorowsky.

5. REMINDER: Alternative Comics Benefit Sale

As you may have read online, publisher Alternative Comics is going through some rough financial times right now, mostly stemming out of the same financial constraints that affected Top Shelf and Drawn & Quarterly a few years back. To help out Alternative Comics in their time of need, we’ve decided to have a 25% off sale on all in-stock books published by Alternative Comics! See, we already stock (fairly deeply) on all of their titles, so just ordering more would create something of a stock nightmare for us. If we sell you the books though, we have good reason to place a big healthy order with Alternative and hopefully net them a lot of dough.

We’ve set up a rack on the second floor (near the Fantagraphics and manga) that features every Alternative Comics publication in the store, which is actually most of them. The more we sell, the more we’ll order back in. The sale lasts for as long as people are interested so that we can just keep turning over Alternative Comics product. Come on in and support a good publisher by treating yourself to a good comic book.

6. REMINDER: Harbourfront Reading Series: Adrian Tomine

As part of Harbourfront’s Reading Series this year, Harbourfront will be presenting appearances by numerous excellent comics creators. First up, Harbourfront is pleased to welcome Adrian Tomine on Wednesday, September 22nd at 7:30pm at the Brigantine Room. Adrian will be doing a presentation of his works from Optic Nerve. For more information, visit http://www.readings.org/eventsDetail.php?eventID=537 .

Also just confirmed for Harbourfront’s Festival Of Authors is author and designer Chip Kidd. We’re really looking forward to both Adrian and Chip’s return to Toronto, and we strongly encourage all of our customers to go out and support these events.

7. REMINDER: Toronto Comic Arts Festival Update

The Toronto Comic Arts Festival homepage has been updated at http://www.torontocomics.com/tcaf. It contains the dates for the next event (Memorial Day weekend, 2005) as well as a preview of Marc Bell’s poster art for next year’s event. The site will be updated frequently as we confirm more details, make sure to check back soon!

8. Secret: SCOTT PILGRIM DROPS NEXT WEEK

As a reward for reading all the way to the end of this e-mail, I’m gonna tell you about SCOTT PILGRIM.

The new graphic novel from Toronto artist Bryan Lee O’Malley (LOST AT SEA) is coming out next Wednesday, and it is really, really good. Set in the city of Toronto, Scott is a permanent couch-surfer at his gay-best-friend’s bachelor apartment. He’s dating a high-school girl. He’s in a band that sucks/rocks named SEX BOB-OMB! And then the perfect girl for him rollerskates _directly_ out of his dreams, and destroys what precious little security he thought he had. Cue dance-sequences, flying hipster-demons, and air-juggling. If any of this makes any sense to you at all, then this will be the comic you have always dreamed of.

Why are we hyping this? Well, aside from the fact that Bryan was, for a time, an employee of The Beguiling, we’re going to be hosting the launch party for the book really soon. The Details haven’t been finalized yet, but suffice to say it will be awesome and, to be honest, completely inescapable. Hype will be everywhere for the book/party, and we want you mailing list peeps to be able to say “dude, I read it first”. And you will want to say that.

So drop by the store next Wednesday, check out SCOTT PILGRIM VOLUME ONE: SCOTT PILGRIM’S PRECIOUS LITTLE LIFE, get an invite to the party, and enjoy “one of the best books of the year”.

The Cultural Gutter : Return of the Trigan Empire & The Object Is

:: Posted by max @ 8/13/2004 01:41:00 AM
by Guy Leshinski

Return of the Trigan Empire

"When Don Lawrence died last December at age 75, a chorus of artists and writers emerged from the wings to pay homage. Neil Gaiman posted an encomium on his weblog that began, "When I was a boy, Don painted a comic I loved. It was called The Trigan Empire...." The Guardiancalled Lawrence "an exemplar" of British comics, "acclaimed across Europe." Acclaimed everywhere, that is, except his native England (and the rest of the English-speaking world), which paid him as much attention as a shitting pigeon does a windshield. Lawrence was a superstar on the Continent -- knighted, even, by Holland's Queen Beatrix -- and, for the bulk of his career, a nobody at home.">>

The Object Is

"McSweeney's is the New York imprint, founded by one-time cartoonist Dave Eggers, that has become the knowing voice of young, urban sophisticates. In the publisher's tradition of exposing nascent literary movements, McSweeney's Quarterly Concern #13 (US$23) is an all-comix issue, though in place of McS's standard irreverence is an awe of the comics form that borders on the unseemly.">>

Web Editor needed for ROSCO magazine online + comics deadline for fall issue

:: Posted by max @ 8/11/2004 04:10:00 AM
ROSCO, a magazine published in both print and online, dealing with culture, arts, humour and nostalgia, is undergoing a redesign & re-conceptualizing. The new theme? “comics comics comics beoitch!”

Originally a university publication, ROSCO has been around for eight years and is now independently run by a rag-tag crew of misfits out of Toronto. The print version is widely distributed in downtown Toronto, and in select locations in Montreal, Vancouver and Ottawa. Work was under way on a planed revamping of the mag when things went awry for co-ordinating editor Steve Mckay

“I had promised a big fancy re-design of roscomagazine.com that would give our comic creators mad props etc. Well we're all good to go with it, but our web editor suddenly quit so shitty beans for us...but I promise it's a commin' and ROSCO's new focus is aimed fairly squarely on comics and local creators

we is lookin' for a dedicated, talented and creative web designer who wants to take charge of www.roscomagazine.com.

a slight redesign and re-organization is needed, to reflect the current vision of the magazine (comics comics comics beoitch!), and then it's all about the updates. we are two issues behind...the material is good to go, we just need it up there.

we upgraded our account recently, so we have some fun tools to play with, but we need YOU to step up to the plate and tell us what you think would be fun to do with the site.

unfortunately this is largely a volunteer position, although we do have a small amount of cash that we will give you every now and then...plus the occasional free drink, admittance to ROSCO events and the tingling thrill of being part of the team.

Write me at chitchat@roscomagazine.com “

AN OPENING ACT OF UNSPEAKABLE EVIL & RoommateFromHell.com

:: Posted by max @ 8/09/2004 08:34:00 PM
CO:No Media Kings - jim@nomediakings.org

My new novel is just back from the printer. AN OPENING ACT OF UNSPEAKABLE EVIL is a tale of the urban occult told through online blog entries. I'm really happy with how the cover turned out, the right mix of strange and silly, with texture and shadows that are slightly forboding. If you were here with me I'd grab one from a box and thrust it into your hands, but since you're not, here's the next best thing.

Most people on this mailing list know that I publish my own books in Canada. Previously in the US I've been published by the good folks at Four Walls Eight Windows, but for this book I've decided to publish myself in the US via No Media Kings. I'm pretty stoked about this, and I think I have a good chance of making it work. It'll be launching simultanously in the US and Canada in September.

But between this foreign expansion and publishing two books in a year, No Media Kings is even more bare-bones than usual. So I'm hoping that I can get your support on getting the resources together to give this book a good push.

Wanna help? If so, here's a couple ways.

1. INVITE ME TO YOUR TOWN

E-mail me back if you'd like to help set up an event to launch the book. I'm hoping to cover a lot of Canada and the US in the next three months, and I've got a fun act and lots of great co-tourers lined up.

2. ORDER THE BOOK

Score some summer reading and help with my cash flow at the same time. Signed, sanctified and shipped to your door!

3. DONATE MY BOOKS TO THE LIBRARY

Check out my "No Media Kings, Yes Library Bling" campaign!

4. WORK AT A BOOKSTORE?

If you're planning to order the book, I'd like to send you some samplers.

5. WORK IN MEDIA?

Shoot me your address and I'll send out a press pack.

More unspeakably evil developments soon,

Jim

Pluse; while it's still brand new, I'd like to announce:

RoommateFromHell.com

...those of you who've read about my new book AN OPENING ACT OF UNSPEAKABLE EVIL will recognize that URL as the main character Kate's blog. The first entry's up today, and starting midnight tonight a new entry will be posted daily to the faux blog until the whole novel is online.

You can read more about it and add your feedback here.

olympic hype 8/09/04

Not that I have anything against the olympics, but I do take issue with the fact that the entire western world seems to be blinded by sport fever whenever it's that time.

It's funny, whenever I'm offering my opinion about the space program, and how as a species we should be putting a more collective effort towards getting out there, there will always be one person who invariably argues that space exploration is a waste of time and resources. They say we should abolish NASA in favour of putting that energy and money towards fixing terrestrial problems like world hunger and war, etc... but you never hear anyone advocating the abolition of the Olympics, or the film industry...

Ca Va, La BD? : Le Librarire pimps local comics to french readers

:: Posted by max @ 8/05/2004 06:24:00 PM
Le Librarire, a free french literary paper distributed in bookstores, magazine shops, and of course, libraries has a cover story on BD titled Ca Va, La BD?

Translated from the opening paragraph: “It appears that yes: This market, a long time marginalized, is showing abundant vitality. The albums always abundant on the of the bookshops shelves are abundant with Albums [comics/graficnovels] and sales go great guns as the large Publishers resort to muscular advertising offensives. During the last five years, these houses created tens of collections while more modest autres followed in their wake in spite of publicity still often inadequate. Fortunately, through patience and of passion, the wind has changed predicts a beautiful future with these artists of the avant-garde who amply deserve their place among the bones of BD history. “

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 08 02:02

RevolveR One: Sequential Tectonic Shift

Themes of identity, loneliness, homelessness, heredity, of finding our place in life, our perceptions of our selves, of others--basic ingredients of the human condition--are explored in Revolver, the new ongoing comic book from Salgood Sam, also known as Canadian artist Max Douglas.

A collection of short works and the first instalments of longer ongoing stories by Salgood Sam with guest authors a.j.duric and John O`Brien, RevolveR is at times introspective, melancholic and hopeful in its pursuit of truth and understanding.

A vehicle for telling stories, RevolveR is also a test-bed for the medium of Sequential Art and dedicated to stretching the artform through the refinement of old techniques and development of new ones. Hopefully in the process helping to expand the syntax and structure of sequential narrative art.

“I think there are is a great deal of room for growth in the medium; That is consistently still one of the most exciting aspects of working in it – the amount of outer-space left to explore.

Writing as a craft is just starting to be given the sort of attention it deserves in the North American comics community; as their status as a true form of literature as well as art is increasingly acknowledged by the general public. And I see many avenues for development in the visual component of comics, especially from the perspective of narrative and symbolic values. Currently I’ve been giving a lot of thought to the use of the page, as a whole. Tearing down walls as it were, especially the ones we call panels.

While they are efficient at times and excel at lending a regular rhythm to the story, the grid like use of space found in most comics is one of the less expressive ways I can think of to convey a story, and does not entirely faithfully represent the world as I experience it. So I’ve been experimenting with opening up the page and exploring what I think are more both subtle and dramatic ways to lead the readers eye around the space and into the stories. I take a lot of cues from poetry and music in this, having found a great deal in common I think between the forms in this area.

It’s true as you may have read by now, that comics can be one of the slowest and most time consuming methodical ways you can choose to tell stories, but I don’t think I’m bound to ever get board exploring the mediums’ potential.”

Bio

A veteran of 15+ years Max has worked off and on in the mainstream comics industry for Marvel and DC, landing his first job at 21 on Clive Barkers’ serialized Night Breed comic and going on to work on numerous high profile titles as a freelance artist [see www.salgoodsam.com for a full bibliography]. The quest for better stories, more rewarding work and greater control over content eventually led him to all but abandon the mainstream comics world in the mid nineties. He’s continued to work on occasion as a hired gun for DC & Marvel as well as other major publishers, taking on one or two small jobs a year as part of a larger diet of editorial illustration, poster art, painting, graphic design, prop - character and set design. Meanwhile all his spare time over the last 8 years has been spent working on writing and refining a visual voice for himself and developing the skills needed to be a complete comics creator. He’s contributed to a number of recent comics anthologies, small press publications and web zines, as well as being active in the Montreal Comix community as an organizer and sometimes reporter through his comics news blog Sequential.

Salgood Sam’s RevolveR represents a coming out of sorts. The first volley of a creator who has found his stride and is ready to share the results with the world.

Dstrbo.com Update

The Pope is nuts. 8/01/04

Smart Catholics everywhere must have heaved a heavy sigh of embarrassment the other day, when the Vatican officially denounced feminism for making the point that men and women are equal. According to their spokespeople (read: cross-eyed lunatics), such a push for equality makes "homosexuality and heterosexuality virtually equivalent, in a new model of polymorphous sexuality." As if they have any idea what sexuality is about, polymorphous or otherwise. Shit, all this during Pride, too.

But hey, all you God-fearin' ladies out there, don't you worry your pretty little heads over this, because the Vatican also stated that this ruling "in no way hampers a womans access to the heart of Christian life." Ahem- just as long as you know your place, and that dinner should be on the table by six.

I was raised Catholic, I have respect for the people in my life that are Catholic, so I'm curious, what are you going to do about this? Wait for the old fart to die? I honestly don't think that'll change anything.

If I went to church, I'd make a stink. I don't know how, but I would. This isn't right.
