Streeteaters Art Market & Trading Card Symposium

:: Posted by max @ 9/26/2004 01:19:00 AM
Streeteaters Art Market & Trading Card Symposium is tomorrow [sun Sept 26th] Hand made crafts, clothes, zines and more on display.

12pm-6pm.

I have conflicting listings online in regards to location.

The Mirror has it listed at Zeke's Gallery, 3955 St-Laurent. 288-2233.

But the Mirror's listings are notorious for being wrong, in part because half the time people don’t update the info when things change.

Zeke's site currently shows Ombres passagères @ 7:30 pm listed for the slot, though the google cash shows that recently it said the Streeteaters Symposium would be there at 1pm. So I t looks like he took it off the page.

the Zine World site has them at Pharmacie Esperanza 5490 St-Laurent at the corner of St-Viateur, PHONE: 948-3303

This October he mounts his first solo show in Seoul. Christopher Butcher asks why bother?

:: Posted by max @ 9/25/2004 02:01:00 AM
Toronto Comics columnist, web publisher and staffer at The Beguiling asks what’s the point? Why do it?…

"...I have a customer at the store who is a writer for one of the comics newsmagazine websites. You know, reviews, creator interviews, message board, 'exclusive' art and the occasional bit of hype-as-news reporting. He mentioned that he was probably going to have to leave that site for some reason, I can't remember why, and he was considering starting up his own brand-new site. It would have a broader focus, more comics and/as popular culture, that sort of thing…"

The post is an open letter to all of us out here.

Why do it?

And who are you trying to reach with your material,

and what are you doing to reach that audience?

What is your focus?

What are your columnists saying that isn't being said,

your reviewers reviewing that isn't being reviewed?

Basically he asks questions that I suspect any journalism professor or senior editor, publisher, or A.D. at a large professional magazine or paper would approve of. I personally think theses are things important to think about if you want to maintain high standards regardless of the subject of any site. Both to help motivate you to seek out content that is otherwise not being covered, either at all or in a manor that you would like to see, & to maintain some kind of coherent overall presentation.

Usually the answers to these sorts of questions as well as others like them result in the foundational material for a mission statement for your publication and in the design bible for the visuals.

So? What do you think? Leave your comments on his blog here

The Toronto Comic Arts Festival is scheduled for May 27th, 28th, and 29th 2005.

:: Posted by max @ 9/24/2004 08:06:00 PM
Co:Toronto Comic Jam Discussion Group/The Beguiling’s mid-September mailing!

TCAF

This event is shaping up to be sensational, with plans for it to eventually grow to be as important to the city as arts festivals like the CONTACT photography festival or, proportionately comics:movies, as the Film Festival. We’ve got big plans, and we’re going to need help to accomplish everything.

This is where you come in! The Toronto Comic Arts Festival is looking for volunteers for general assistance with running the festival as well as specific skill sets for key positions within the organization.

Whether you’re just interested in helping out on the days of the event in exchange for free admittance into the events, or working in more challenging roles with art galleries, publishers, in fundraising, with schools, or the media, we want you! And if you don’t live in close physical proximity to the store, no problem!

There’s plenty…and we do mean plenty… of writing to be done. Specifically right now we’re looking to fill two positions:

SHERIDAN COLLEGE LIASON – We’re looking for someone to work with the festival to develop a relationship with Sheridan College, in order to assist in setting up guest-speaker events at the College and facilitate better communication between the faculty/administration and The Festival. Applicant should have demonstratably strong written and verbal communication skills, and ideally is a second- or third-year student at Sheridan College in Oakville in either the illustration or animation streams.

GALLERY COORDINATOR – We are planning a number of gallery showings of comic and comic-related artworks in the month preceeding and following the Toronto Comic Arts Festival. We’re looking for someone who will work with The Festival to implement shows / show ideas, and be the contact person for interested parties organizing their own shows. Applicant should have demonstratably strong written and verbal communication skills, and experience in the Toronto art scene. Previous experience working with artists and illustrators would also be an asset.

Just e-mail mail@beguiling.com with your resume and which position you think you would be great for.

And if you’d still like to help but don’t know how, don’t worry! We will find something for you because believe me, there’s a lot to be done! We truly and sincerely want to make this the best comics-related event Toronto has ever seen, and one of the destination comics events in North America. We need your help to do it! Thanks, The Staff of the Toronto Comic Arts Festival

Art Spiegleman in converstation with Seth, Oct 22

:: Posted by max @ 9/24/2004 07:33:00 PM
Co: Toronto Comic Jam Discussion Group / Dave Howard

A Talk supported by Random House of Canada Ltd: Friday, October 22 at 8 pm (Brigantine Room)

Art Spiegelman (U.S.A.) has almost single-handedly brought comic books out of the toy closet and onto the literature shelves. In 1992 he won the Pulitzer Prize for his masterful Holocaust narrative, Maus, which portrayed Jews as mice and Nazis as cats. His comics are best known for their shifting graphic styles, their formal complexity, and controversial content. Having rejected his parents’ aspirations for him to become a dentist, Spiegelman studied cartooning in high school and began drawing professionally at age 16. His work has since been published in many periodicals, including The New Yorker, where he was a staff artist and writer for ten years. “Spiegelman has become one of The New Yorker’s most sensational artists, in recent years drawing illustrations for covers that are meant not just to be plainly understood but also to reach up and tattoo your eyeballs with images once unimaginable in the magazine of old moneyed taste” (Los Angeles Times). His highly political drawing series, In the Shadow of No Towers, has been published in a number of European newspapers and magazines including Die Zeit and The London Review of Books. A book version of In the Shadow of No Towers has just been published.

I can't find Seth on their website, but the flier they handed out at Adrian Tomine's reading indicated Art Spiegelman and Seth would be together, 'in conversation'. - Dave

SMASH COMICS SPLITS WITH PRINTER OVER DREAMS IN TEXTURE

:: Posted by max @ 9/22/2004 08:30:00 AM

Co: Mike Gagnon @ SMASH

SMASH! Comics and parent company Lightningstrike Publishing have split from an exclusive printing deal with an undisclosed printing company that has only been in effect since July 1st of 2004.

In June of 2004 Lightningstrike Publishing decided to seek out an exclusive printer for all of its printing needs as well as those of its subsidiaries (SMASH! Comics most notably). The name of the business chosen is not being released, but folks at LSP are acknowledging that the business has been the exclusive printer for this company since July 1st 2004 and that the business is based in Port Elgin, Ontario just 20 minutes north of the LSP offices located in Tiverton, Ontario.

The split stems from problems that the printer had in delivering the ordered product for Dreams in Texture #1, Created by Kevin Clorey and Tom Muzzell. The issues were supposed to be on store shelves by mid-September, but were not delivered to SMASH! Comics until September 16th, a full three weeks after they were originally promised. What's more is upon inspection staff and creators at SMASH! found numerous and consistent problems with the quality of the printing, binding, and trimming of the books. Because of this SMASH! has been forced to cancel the book, which was to be their first comic fully solicited and distributed by Diamond.

"We could not in good conscious ship these books out to Diamond knowing that they were going to paying comics readers, who deserve better quality than this for their money" said Lightningstrike president Mike Gagnon. "Even worse, it's been more than 48 hours since our printer has been notified of our decision and our problems with the printing on Dreams, and they haven't even contacted us with a response."

For those who have bee eagerly awaiting the release of this comic featuring the amazing fantasy style art and writing of Tom Muzzell and Kevin Clorey SMASH! Comics has stated that the material contained the issue in question will now be included in a planned Trade Paperback publication scheduled for the Christmas season, being produced with a different printer.

For more info on the Dreams in Texture trade paperback or its creators visit: http://www.lightningstrike.ca/smashcomics

Rick Trembles' MOTION PICTURE PURGATORY comic-strip review of...

ZOMBIE (1979): "Don’t say eye didn’t warn you!"

Last few reviews: Screamplay, ALIEN VERSUS PREDATOR, & the MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE.

Special message to MOTION PICTURE PURGATORY fans in the Montreal region!

British-based FAB Press’ brand new Motion Picture Purgatory book is slated to make it into downtown shops by this month but I’ve been around to the major bookstores asking if copies were in stock & got varied responses. After checking their computers & tracking the product number, some clerks told me that despite the major distribution & rave reviews, for some reason they had no indication yet the book was coming in & explained that the only way they could guarantee ordering enough copies to fill their shelves at this point is if enough customers actually ask for it.

So please! If you happen to be downtown browsing the bigger bookstores, even if you have no intention of buying a copy of MOTION PICTURE PURGATORY, take a moment to ask if & when this book will be stocked so that actual residents from the same city the comic-strip originated in can eventually obtain copies! Try inquiring by phone as well. Thanks!

Some of the major downtown bookstores in question are:

CHAPTERS (1171 St-Catherine Street, 849-8825)

the Place Montreal Trust INDIGO (1500 McGill College Avenue, 281-5549)

& PARAGRAPHE (2220 McGill College Avenue, 845-5811).

CBC News Viewpoint | September 07, 200 | Growing up geeky by Dan Brown

:: Posted by max @ 9/08/2004 01:14:00 PM
I had lunch recently with my buddy Tom. In between bites of some very tasty Greek food, we talked about our shared disdain for computer-generated special effects, the ways in which Spider-man 2 is superior to the original, and how, as a boy, I could never get the name of the villain in Battlestar Galactica right. You know – geek stuff...

...Oh, and by the way, the bad guy's name on Battlestar Galactica was Baltar (I'm sure you remember that he was played by Canadian actor John Colicos). When I was a kid, for some reason that now escapes me, I kept calling him Tarbalt. I don't know why I always screwed that one up, but it sure made Tom laugh.

Enjoyed your article Dan. Other than being a city kid, much of it resonated. I was an outcast for many of the same reasons until I got into an arts high school, where I found vindication in numbers.

Tarbalt = Tar - balt = balt - Tar = Baltar

That’s a spoonerism, a common childhood dyslexic trait, one that I still verbalize from time to time. - max
