Announcing Expozine 2004: Montreal's 3rd Annual Small Press, Comic, and Zine Fair!

Sunday, November 28, 11 - 6 p.m.

Station C, 1450 Ste. Catherine St. E.

corner of Plessis (metro Beaudry). Admission FREE.

This day-long event brings together over 140 creators of all kinds of printed matter ‹ in English and in French ‹ for one of the great culture fairs of the city.

Expozine was born in 2002 to provide a place where publications outside the mainstream media can reach the reading public. It is also a place where members of the small press community and local writers and artists can make new connections with each other. So far, it has been a huge success: thousands of people have discovered hundreds of publications, and more and more people take part each year.

Montreal is rich in small press activity, with an internationally renowned comics scene and a thriving small press and zine community. All of these are represented at Expozine, which this year also includes more publishers from outside Montreal than ever before.

We hope you make the most of this rare opportunity to see all of this diversity showcased in one place. Browse! Shop! Meet the creators! And most of all, have fun!

The Artists: Al+Flag, Jean-Claude Amyot, Hélène Brosseau, Simon Bossé, Rupert Bottenberg, Caro Caron, Jean-Pierre Chansigaud, G.B. Edwin, Alexandre Lafleur, Billy Mavreas, Stéphane Olivier, Helge Reumann, Carlos Santos, Siris, Richard Suicide.

Mac Tin Tac, a dystopic allegory of modern life told through a unique combination of myth and hard-edged realism, was originally serialized in five comics between 1990 and 1995. To illustrate their vision, Montreal authors Tessier and Oliver commissioned the emerging talent of Quebec's avant garde. Many of these artists went on to varying degrees of success publishing in French in Europe and Quebec, and in English in Cyclops: Contemporary Canadian Narrative Art, which conundrum press published to rave reviews in 2003. However, this story was left uncollected until now.

Mac is a mirror maker in a world in which everyone works for the Cake Factory. When the factory is put on wheels and moved to a third world country, the citizens revolt. Concerned with anti-globilization politics long before the term became commonplace, the story is a mix of Orwell's 1984 and Gabriel Garcia Marquez's magic realism. Mac's desperate attempt to create beauty in a bleak world is the overarching theme in the book. But the dazzling variety of drawing styles keeps the reader immersed in the lives of various peripheral characters as well, their desire for employment, for the taste of intoxicating bananas, for new shoes, or simply to be noticed by a populace constricted by blinders.

Mac Tin Tac, which includes new material done especially for this edition, is not only an impressive cultural document from Quebec's fin-de-siècle underground but is also a chronicle of the struggle for hope in the face of corporate uncertainty.

Stéphane Olivier teaches graphic design. He recently finished the graphic novel Le Clairon and is editing the next book in the Cyclopes series.

Marc Tessier has collaborated with Alexandre Lafleur on Theatre of Cruelty (Fantagraphics) and the upcoming Abinagouesh series (Delcourt). He is a frequent contributor to The Comics Journal.

Art Speigelman has called comix the "bastard child of art and commerce" and this is nowhere more in evidence than in this week's New Yorker, the annual Cartoon Issue featuring a Robert Crumb cover, tons of gag cartoons, and an essay on Peanuts by Jonathan Franzen. But the highlight of the issue for comic literates is four pages of beautiful full-colour autobio strips by Seth, disguised as an ad for Johnnie Walker scotch. Booze isn't mentioned, but crackers and Little Lulu receive full coverage.

Lightningstrike Publishing Closes Up Shop After Four Years

:: Posted by max @ 11/17/2004 02:17:00 AM
co. http://www.onlypunjab.com

Publish Date : 11/15/2004 7:20:00 PM Source : Business News Onlypunjab.com

As of midnight on November 11th Lightningstrike Publishing has officially dissolved as a business, primarily due to a two year financial battle with Canadian bank CIBC.

The closure comes after the break down of negotiations between Lightningstrike and Nordon Collection Networks, who are representing the CIBC. The problem arises from a two year dispute involving a 2002 business investment between the small Canadian publisher, and one of the big five banks of Canada. Lightningstrike launched its successful comic book line, SMASH! Comics, in 2002 with a funding loan from Bizsmart Inc. Nine months after its launch, and six months after funding SMASH! Comics Bizsmart, a subsidiary of CIBC, folded and went bankrupt. When Bizsmart went bankrupt the company’s final act was to demand all payment in full on any outstanding balances that did not meet the re-financing terms set forth by CIBC. Because a small press comic book label was considered by the bank to be very high risk, Lightningstrike was immediately declined for re-financing.

When Lightningstrike was unable to pay the outstanding balance to CIBC immediately and in full, the matter was quickly handed over to collection agency after collection agency, each one continuing to inflate the balance payable. Things came to a head when CIBC enlisted the services of the Nordon Collection Network in summer of 2004. Negotiations broke down between Nordon and Lightningstrike when the collection agency refused to deal with an outside member willing to grant Lightningstrike a private loan to cover the debts, or to accept monthly payments on the balance from Lightningstrike. Nordon’s stance was based on a huge misunderstanding of the comic book industry. Agents from the collection agency repeatedly stated that a small press comic company with a website should easily be able to generate the balance of $10,000 of disposable profit within 30 days.

Faced with Nordon’s unwillingness to deal and unrealistic view of the comic industry Lightningstrike owner Mike Gagnon was faced with a tough decision.

“It all boils down to greed…” Said Gagnon, he added; “…I’d rather make the choice to step out of business myself than be forced out of business by a greedy corporation.” Although Lightningstrike has never gone bankrupt they are now using the services of a financial trustee to resolve any and all outstanding debts with creditors, which includes the CIBC. Several highly publicized projects, studios, and subsidiaries of Lightningstrike, including SMASH! Comics, have already begun to find new homes and will be showing up again in the near future.

RICK TREMBLES' MOTION PICTURE PURGATORY REVIEWED ON POOP SHEET

:: Posted by max @ 11/14/2004 11:19:00 PM
The uninitiated will not note the gag in this headline, and those of you who do get it, get you head out of the gutter and quite snickering!

Rick Bradford reviews Rick Trembles, and it is good. Here’s an excerpt…

Maybe it’s the subject matter – film criticism - unusual even for alternative comics. Perhaps the fact that, aside from appearing in the Montreal Mirror newspaper (may its circulation increase!), Rick Trembles’ work is only occasionally seen in comics anthologies. (Though those who hang about The Comics Journal message board are regularly alerted by Rick himself to online postings of his latest review-strips...in color, yet!) How else to account for the relative lack of fame and insufficient acclaim given this Canadian comics creator? Several sessions* of dipping into the delights of this splendid collection can’t help but impress upon the discerning reader that Rick Trembles is a remarkable talent, and that his "Motion Picture Purgatory" is a top runner for the most formally inventive comic strip ever. ”The unique layout of each one of these strips is a marvel to behold,” says Pete Bagge, if I may bring in one of the “big guns” to confirm my judgment…>>>

Globe trotting Montreal cartoonist Jack Ruttan reports in from Thailand Comix Show

:: Posted by max @ 11/12/2004 04:42:00 PM
A month ago local doodler and friend Jack Ruttan contacted me about a group show of Montreal comix artists he was organizing in Thailand with film maker Peter Mantello at the Tadu contemporary art gallery. He picked up 3 images from 15 local artists and personally escorted them and a stack of our books to the show as our envoy. Here is a report from him early this week…

Hi all,

My health is dodgy, but the first workshop was popular. About 31 artists ranging from elderly silhouette artists to toddlers, including in that range hordes of Manga kids, and Japanese girl graphic artists. Next week we do stories, and Photoshop. Also, I am trying to establish Comic Jam Thailand. Got lots of interviews in the local media, which I will be able to pass on in clips later, plus wild images of the expo, and many strange pictures of myself, who was a popular subject.

Sold most of the books I brought, so am looking at how to get more shipped over (someone please tell Billy!)

Gosh, I hope you're all getting these messages. The exhibition looks spectacular and has attracted a lot of attention! The gallery turns out to be one of the top contemporary art galleries in town (very strange art scene here).

Well, I've finished most of the hard work, and can relax, and perhaps get things such as e-mail more organized. I'm getting interviewed by the local manage magazine, and will get a view of the local scene. Most of the people I've met are pretty cool artists with great techniques, but there are still things I can share with them.

If this continues going well, there are a couple of possibilities: 1) The show will travel over other parts of Asia such as Vietnam and Singapore. I don't know if I can go with it. 2) We might come back next year, with a group of artists! (so keep your fingers crossed, but none of this is decided yet)

The brochure for the exhibit is a big plastic-laminated affair, and features full colour pics & bios of all the artists and their works [Scans to come latter]. Also press clips for your dossiers (never a bad thing for an artist). You lucky sods! Though I'm the luckiest, at the moment.

He’s also started posting reports on his blog Utopia Moment and promises that photos are soon to come.

Comix jam report for Sunday October 31

:: Posted by max @ 11/01/2004 10:08:00 PM
Hello everyone, Here's a report of my weirdest Comix jam ever.

First of all and maybe it was my fault since I didn't not send my reminding e-mails in time to you folks, the jam was only attended by five persons: Kurt, Francis, two persons from the public and myself. Then the weird influence of Halloween started its spell. As I was setting up the table, the barmaid informed me that there will be a poetry reading starting at 2 PM. I was very surprised by that since the Casa confirmed to me that the jam was booked for Sunday, October 31. It seems they forgot about us and they booked the poetry event on the same schedule. Thus, we ended up being squeezed at our table by all these amateur poets: Francis dressed as a Russian officer handing out strange chocolate ladybugs with green goo, Kurt giving dadaist comments on toilet and vulva themed poems and me trying to keep the guys quiet as I watch an army of amateur poets ready to scalp alive a few comix book artists. So we broke out seeking political asylum from bad poets at the Assymetrian Consulate (i.e.my place). Sorry that you missed that weird Jam. Next time, we'll be more prepared for a new poet free jam...

Spookily yours,

Jane- Jam High Priestess
