Vétéran des publications BD, le sort du beau journal de Spirou était en jeu dans l'absorption des Éditions Dupuis par le groupe Media-Participations. Aux dernières nouvelles, non seulement Spirou continuera-t-il de paraître, mais c'est Patrick Pinchart qui en assurera de nouveau la direction, succédant ainsi à Thierry « Le Boss » Tinlot qui en tenait la barre depuis 1993. Patrick Pinchart avait assumé la direction de Spirou de 1987 à 1993. La rédaction de Spirou a été fusionnée avec le département multimédia des Éditions Dupuis (CD-ROMs, sites Internet, jeux vidéo) sous une seule équipe de création. THE ARTIST: Char Hoyt



THE LOWDOWN: Head in the Clouds is an ambitious showing of recent 2-D work from the local comic artist. Composed of ink drawings, oil paintings, and several installations, the exhibition fuses together several loosely related themes under the umbrella of Hoyt's ongoing interest in the weather, especially the inclement variety.



COORDINATES: Head in the Clouds runs until December 31 at the Butchershop gallery (195 East 26th Avenue). Hours are 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., Friday to Tuesday.



PROCESS ORIENTED: Hoyt increasingly utilizes the repetition of motifs and figures in her humorous illustrations of the quotidian highs and lows she experiences. Meanwhile, the varied representations of ominous storm-cloud formations are a fitting metaphor for her perspective on the dark sociopolitical situation we currently endure. Hoyt uses the self- portrait and landscape genres to great effect, stripping away perspectival depth with her emphasis on the sky. The larger oil paintings--typically executed over a period of several months--feature what the artist has called "ass balls", rotund figures expressing intense emotional states. Complementing Hoyt's illustrated landscape work is a series of mutilated self-portraits in ink and spray paint that shift between representation and abstraction. A couple of installations round out the show: a gorgeous charcoal tornado piece spiralling up the west wall of the Butchershop, and a flock of stencil-painted crows travelling along the east one.



WHAT IT ALL MEANS: "The show is mostly concerned with the weather and how our emotional states might relate to what is going on outside. How it can mirror those feelings, or maybe not at all," says Hoyt in an interview at the gallery. "I find crows to be interesting birds in that they mimic our patterns of family and daily life. They represent our community, or at least my community."

CBG's Best of 2004 list & Roundtable

"I have no idea why it is that humans are so compelled to assess and reflect upon the changing into a new year, but I'm as guilty of this urge as anybody else. I warn you now that the opinions that follow -- both mine and those of a select roundtable of comics commentators -- will take some time to read. If you are subject to eyestrain, you might want to print this out for offline reading, or at least pace yourself, maybe take a walk around the block around the halfway point."



The round table is a good read – very political in a lot of ways, the guys defiantly pull no punches in sighting their complaints as well as praise for all areas of the comic industry.



The shutting down of Highwater Books is noted here a few times, but the guys are operating on the assumption that Highwater closing was due to it’s supposed inability to make money. I don’t know if it was the most profitable venture for Tom, but when I talked to him at Expozine this year about the announcement, his main reason seemed to be more about wanting to spend more time working on his own books, which largely till now he was unable to do – He commented on the fact that he did become a publisher in part to help fill a void in the market he felt was being neglected at the time, but he said he didn’t feel that was true any longer necessarily at all. In the years since quite a few other Indy publishers of art comix have come into existence, and many artists are being more proactive about self-publishing. Money was probably a factor – it’s always been hard to turn a profit as a small publisher. But I don’t think it’s the great tragedy the guys here are making it out to be, or quite so ominous an omen at all. In fact it could be seem and a good sign depending on your POV.



Given that many of the cancelled projects have already found homes, and the remainder that are deserving will as well sooner or latter I suspect - we may have lost a imprint, but we’re not going to be short to many comix, plus I think it’s fair to hope for a few more from Tom himself.

WOW: i'm getting a early x-mas present it seems. Just 24hrs ago my new project at Image with Kieron Dwyer & Rick Remender was officially announced [link] and then I got the word today that my personal baby, RevolveR #1, released this summer in limited local distribution and available online via the books web site by direct order, was voted Best First Issue of 2004 on Comic Book Galaxy's Best of 2004 list.



Cool! Me so happy. Thanks to Alan for his unqualified support for Revolver, and Rick and Kerion all for the good words in general. There will be extra big socks full of goodness in the mail for them all in the New Year.



I’ll be doing something about getting wider distro for RevolveR in the new year, but if you’re a local shop owner who doesn’t want to wait the 4-6 months it will probably take to get this into shops the usual way, be the coolest comic shop in town and contact me about ordering them from spilt ink directly!



And if you just want to order a copy or two for yourself you can do that at the RevolveR site. If you order online in the next day or so, no guarantees but it just might make it to you before Xmas in Canada or the US.

Tintin et ses hormones de croissance

Le Dr Claude Cyr, un médecin, professeur à la Faculté de médecine de l'Université de Sherbrooke, a publié une étude sur l'apparent retard de croissance et l'absence de libido de Tintin. Cette condition serait due à une lésion à l'hypophyse, la glande qui sécrète l'hormone de croissance, suite aux coups répétés qui Tintin a reçu sur la tête au cours de sa carrière. À bien regarder, il s'agit d'un excellent pastiche d'une publication scientifique, dans lequel ses co-auteurs (ses deux fils âgés de 5 et 7 ans) ont compté le nombre de fois où Tintin perdait connaissance dans ses 26 aventures (50 fois), et ont même évalué la gravité de la lésion en comptant le nombre d'étoiles qui tournaient autour de sa tête! Une dépêche Associated Press a souligné la sortie de cet article, qui a été reprise dans La Presse et qui a même fait la « une » du très sérieux journal parisien Le Monde.

Prix Goscinny

« Le Prix René Goscinny est attribué cette année à Bruno Le Floc'h pour le scénario de l'album « Trois éclats blancs », paru aux éditions Delcourt dans la collection Mirages. Ce prix récompense le meilleur jeune scénariste de l'année. Le lauréat se verra remettre un trophée en bronze et la somme de 5 000 euros lors de la cérémonie officielle de remise des prix du Festival International de la bande dessinée d'Angoulême, qui aura lieu en janvier prochain. » Il n'y a malheureusement que très peu d'exemplaires de cette BD chez les libraires du Québec. Whether it be the real life adventures of pirates on the high seas, the doomed pirate sea port of Port Royal or the more fictional stories like last year's feature "Pirates of the Carribbean" or the short-lived "El Cazador" comic, audiences have historically been attracted to those swashbuckling adventures.

The two “new” titles are On The Rocks and War Story: An American Parable .

On The Rocks - With visuals stylistically akin to the DC animated style and a story based on the myth of Sisyphus, this "comix noir" piece offers the tale of a young factory worker who learns the consequences that can result from brutal honesty and misplaced trust. Sometimes even the best of intentions can’t save you in the end.

War Story: An American Parable - Originally written and illustrated as a submission for the war-themed 2004 SPX Anthology this piece was ultimately not selected for inclusion. Juxtaposing images of life in the United States since 9/11 with a historical quote from an alarming source, this timely and evocative short piece packs a powerful punch.

ALMOST FAMOUS

CBC RADIO 3 - After another successful set of appearances at Vancouver’s annual Comix & Stories event and the Vancouver component of the nation-wide Word On The Street literary festival, Ken Boesem was contacted to explore the possibility of having some of his work featured on CBC Radio 3’s Web site. For those not in the know, Radio 3 is the big corporation’s (by which I mean CBC) upstart alternative voice for new and emerging artists in all creative genres. Sadly the idea didn’t go ahead, but hopefully in future we’ll revisit the possibility. Even without him, the site remains pretty darn cool and it’s well worth checking out. www.cbcradio3.com

BROKEN PENCIL - 1918 , Ken Boesem’s 2003 short story from the SPX Anthology, is still kicking around in booklet form and was reviewed favourably by Broken Pencil , the magazine of zine culture and the independent arts, in it’s current issue (#26). www.brokenpencil.com

The Streeteaters Artist Market

Poet and zine publisher Paula Belina, the instigator of The Streeteaters Artist Market invites you to join her at the monthly gatherings of Montreal’s local art book and zine publishers, poets, and assorted creative makers of things.



The Streeteaters Artist Market takes place on December 19 this month, and ussuly most months on the last Sunday of every month from 1 pm to mid afternoon/early evening [6 or so] at Zekes Gallery - 3955 Saint Laurent - and then moves up the street around 6 pm to Pharmacie Esperanza - 5490 St. Laurent -



Expect small workshops, zines, poetry chapbooks, prints, hand-crafted works, artist trading card exchange and underground comix.



Comix folks, note that while there is no Jam this month, the Monthly Comic jam is also now on the last Sunday of the month, from 1 to 6PM At Casa del Popolo - 4673 St-Laurent – right between Zeeks and the Pharmacie, so you can make a underground culture crawl of it and get all you silk screened and photo copied doodling needs met, write a poem, and make it into a comix too while your at it.

We're recently back from Montreal and, despite the dipping mercury and a light dusting of snow, we're warmed by the afterglow of Expozine. It was an amazing event, proving that Montreal is a fertile ground for the mini, micro, and small presses, cartoonists, and zinesters. We picked up a lot of small mags, books, and ephemera! We'll make a note of things received and recommended on our website, when we have a chance to scan some images and leaf through the reams.



Until then, enjoy a short video clip of the event that we've put up. Of course, more pictures, reviews, and scans coming shortly!
