1st Annual CANADIAN COMIC BOOK CREATOR AWARDS:Press Release Co:www.torontocomicon.com Canada’s own comic book award to be launched in 2005; Initial presentation scheduled for gala Toronto ceremony in April TORONTO (January 27, 2005) – Canada is about to get its own award recognizing outstanding achievement in the creation of comic books: the SHUSTER, named after pioneering Toronto-born artist Joe Shuster who, along with writer Jerry Siegel, created the iconic super-powered hero, Superman. The SHUSTER Award is named in honour of the great artist, JOE SHUSTER (1914-1992), whose clear, dynamic style and inventive visual flourishes set the standard for graphic storytelling during the infancy of the North American comic book industry. It was Superman, a co-creation of Shuster and Siegel, that electrified the industry in 1938 and, almost overnight, transformed comic books into an enormous pop-cultural phenomenon. In 1924, at the age of 10, Joe and his family moved from Toronto to Cleveland, Ohio, where he met Cleveland native Jerry Siegel. During the early 1930s, the friends collaborated on producing science-fiction fanzines and contributing cartoons to local publications. After devising and polishing the basic concept of Superman in the mid ’30s, Siegel and Shuster tried to sell their creation to newspaper syndicates as a comic strip character, but to no avail. However, they did manage to break into comic books —notably, the forerunner of today’s DC Comics — with many memorable characters, including Dr. Occult, Slam Bradley and the Radio Squad. Finally, in 1938, DC decided to take a chance on Superman, who debuted in Action Comics #1, the June issue. In an interview shortly before his death in 1992, Shuster told Toronto Star reporter Henry Mietkiewicz that Toronto’s skyline had served as the inspiration for Superman’s home town, Metropolis. In addition, Superman’s alter ego, Clark Kent, worked for a newspaper that in the earliest adventures was named the Daily Star, a tip of the hat to the Toronto Daily Star (as the paper was then called). In fact, Shuster had been a Star paperboy and had grown to love comics while sitting on his father’s knee and listening as his dad read the Star’s comic strips aloud. - Stumble It! - Leave a comment!| 0comments - Friday, January 28, 2005 Propeller Centre for the Visual Arts presents "PPOP! @ Propeller" February 16 - March 6, 2005FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: PRESS RELEASE Dated February 1, 2005 EXHIBITION: "PPOP! @ Propeller" February 16 - March 6, 2005 OPENING Reception: Saturday, 19th February, 2005, featuring music by "LOST PILGRIMS". Political Minded 4, Los Angeles 01/19/05 So I just got back from California, where it rained for a few weeks straight and the Californians were running around like their hair was on fire. We caught the tail end of the flooding, but after that, it went right back to being fine summer weather. That place is nuts. Our show last friday night went off, we did the space (called The Space) up right in record time, we had three days to paint the walls, hang canvases, etc. Thanks again to Damian and Jamal of Cold Water Flat, those guys work their asses off for all the right reasons. We couldn't do it without them. Also thanks to Tom, Addison, and Jacob, who trusted us with their film equipment even though we were obviously a shifty bunch of Canadians. Chris H and Damon helped out, beyond the call, and Language from NY lowered his standards out of pure generosity and played a spectacular set for us. Last but not least, Serigraphe Chris and his assistant from NY were once again the stars of the night, throwing themselves against the voracious crowd of custom screen printed t-shirt junkies with no apparent concern for their own safety. It was a massive party, way more people than I expected, the final tally somewhere near 500 souls, from what I'm told, all thanks to Tyler and the Cold Water Flat fellas. free beer and good times. Next I want to do it overseas, London or Tokyo perhaps. The seminar, set to take place at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles on Feb. 5, is being held in conjunction with the museum's current exhibit Royal Art Lodge: Ask the Dust. I try to be considerate, but I don't go out of my way in referring to people as Italian-Americans, Japanese-American, etc. I believe it to be a matter of misplaced intentions. Ironically, it's often people who apply such divisive labels who then plead, "Why can't we come together as a united people?"With that in mind, I feel the comics industry, as well as television and film, is doing their audience a disservice in making much ado about a character's race, or ethnic background. Don’t get me wrong, cultural diversity is a beautiful fact of life. Since the days of the original Star Trek, writers have strived to be all-inclusive when creating a large cast of characters, sometimes going to what I feel to be unreasonable extremes. It wasn't enough to feature a Vulcan on Star Trek: Voyager, they had to make him "African-Vulcan." I consider this to be a situation of "shoehorning" cultural diversity down our throat. - Stumble It! - Leave a comment!| 0comments - Tuesday, January 11, 2005 An Interview With Alex Fellows @ Comic Book Bin Back after an absence, Mr. Charlie #43 looks at Alex Fellows. The 25-year old Canadian is a rising alt-comics star and winner of a Xeric Grant. Fantagraphics Books dropped Alex’s first graphic novel, CANVAS, earlier this year. This past fall, we spoke with him:Would you mind introducing yourself to the readers, a little biographical info, if you wish? ALEX: I was born in Montreal, Quebec, on May 11th 1979. I come from a fairly normal family. The most fascinating thing about me is that I once got hit by a car fast enough to break the whole front windshield and put a big dent in the roof, yet I did not break a single bone in my body. Would you mind describing CANVAS, your new small graphic novel from Fantagraphics? ALEX: The story revolves mostly around a 14-year old girl named Canvas. Her dad is a frog and her mom is a pig. Together they go on a camping trip, where Canvas has some new experiences with boys and booze. -->> - Stumble It! - Leave a comment!| 0comments - UNDERWORLD: MY LITTLE FUNNY – Collection Reviewed @ Comic Book Bin UNDERWORLD: MY LITTLE FUNNY – CollectionFANTAGRAPHICS BOOKS CARTOONIST: Kaz ISBN: 1-56097-567-9 96 pp., B&W, $9.95

But please, let me know your choice before Monday the 10th of January [to vote you must be a member of the MMCJ news group]. After this deadline, I will have no other choice, due to booking limitations, to make a decision on where to hold the Jam. Other news, Olivier Charbonneau is thinking of seeking a subsidy from the Arts Council of Canada. He wishes to publish an anthology of the works produced during the last jams held through the years. The project is still in the air and Olivier may ask your help after he comes back from the Angoulême festival. At this time, I may call the jammers for a extraordinary meeting so we can get more infos from Olivier. Moreover, if you have some good works in black and white hidden in your pantries, don't throw it away since Olivier is also looking for some pictures of comix to put in his upcoming book on comix in Quebec. It may be a good opportunity to increase our visibility as comic book artists. Finally, a sad news: The "OrsonWelles" (dixit Neil Gaiman) of the Comix world, Will Eisner died last Monday after a heart bypass in Florida. Another Giant is now gone.:( So this is it, and Happy New Year to everyone! Established in 1996 by brothers Pat and Roger Lee, Dreamwave infused a stagnant comic book market with art and design that effortlessly combined the then dominant “American” art style with the newly emerging Japanese “Manga” art style. Since then, the company had grown to become one of the comic book industry’s premiere publishers, producing a variety of original titles. In 2002, Dreamwave firmly established itself in the comic industry as a force to be reckoned with when it launched an all-new Transformers comic’s line. The return of the 80’s icons shattered industry sales records, skyrocketing the book to the number one sales slot for an impressive six months. The Toronto-based company’s other successful licenses included Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Duel Masters from Japan, as well as properties like Devil May Cry and Mega Man from video game giant Capcom Entertainment. President of Dreamwave Productions, Pat Lee stated “there are a number of reasons for my decision to close Dreamwave”, citing that “the shrinking comic book market combined with a weak U.S. dollar and unsustainable monetary commitments has finally proven to be too financially taxing.” As the only Canadian independent comics publisher {ED: Not true! BUNK - How about these eh? - for pure hubris and lack of general awareness of their fellow canucks, this web jerno gives Dreamwave and hardy raspberry on their way out the door :P }, Dreamwave Productions has struggled in recent years to maintain its status within a relentlessly shrinking comic book market. Unfortunately, consistently diminishing sales totals over the last several years have taken their toll on the small publisher and made it impossible to continue. The specific details for closure have not yet been released but Lee assures both fans and clients alike that “although this is the end of Dreamwave as a comics publisher, I will still be penciling a number of new exciting projects in conjunction with other studios in the upcoming years.” - Stumble It! - Leave a comment!| 0comments - Fall of a giant || Will Eisner, RIP (1917-2005) Not one to put people on pedestals, I have few true larger than life heroes or idols.
