Speakeasy’s Comic Book Show in Toronto April 7th

Everyone loves comics, right? Maybe you get your fix through a daily newspaper strip. Or maybe your tastes run to the more highbrow art comics from Europe. However you choose to look at them, comics offer a different, and often a fun way to look at life and art.

Well for anyone who has ever loved (or still loves) comics, it may come as a surprise to learn that Toronto is home to some of the best known comics artists in North America. We have an active and vibrant community putting out some of the highest quality comics to be found anywhere. The SpeakEasy Comics Show features an eclectic mix of Toronto's talented comics artists - from those who do newspaper strips and political cartoons, to underground comix and mainstream superhero comic books! The event promises to display an exciting cross-section of the comics community here in Toronto, as well as a glimpse into how good comics are made. As the old cliché goes, there really will be something for everyone.

Celebrated comics artist Kim Deitch talks about time out of joint, the joys of junk lit and those crazy animated cats

In the last few years, as they did in the late '60s and '80s, comics have once again busted out of their relegated spot in the cultural margins. Art Spiegelman, R. Crumb and Harvey Pekar have all become household names due to the growing popularity of the medium.

New York City's Kim Deitch is rapidly becoming the next big comics discovery. The only problem with the word "discovery" is that he's been working in the comics trenches since the '60s. Spiegelman himself has declared Deitch "one of the best-kept secrets in comics for the past 35 years."-->>

Back on line | Rockingraven Studios is almost too busy these days

We are just completing a series of almost 250 illustrations for an English Second Language textbook- The authors are off to Texas in April to show the book potential to educators and publishers.

The Ratavinagus project contract is now ready for signing and we understand that Chinese and Korean artists are beginning their sections this week. Haida will begin next week.
We will be on main stage at EXPO 2005 in May painting Haida manga on 8 foot high canvases alongside Japanese mangaka.

Here in our studio the walls are filled with advanced work ups for the big mural book project. This is a 2 meter square image that breaks down into a book. A long time in the development stage we will be continuing our discussions with a Korean publishing house which has persistently requested some new Haida manwha for a 100 page full colour publication. It seems that our War of the Blink will move ahead of the Carpenter’s Fin. War of the Blink is an account of a battle between a Haida town and Raiders from Canada.

There are many, many adjectives that could describe Glenn Rodgers. Original, funny, artistic, clever, optimistic, happy, charming and above all brimming with the skill and talent of not only being able to draw cartoons but to be able to accompany them with witty and timely words… not an easy thing to do!

I met Rodgers nearly eight years ago when I first came to Whistler and started working for The Question. His irreverent, timely and always thought-provoking cartoons that appeared weekly in the Question immediately had me turning to his page first. I was hooked.-->>

Torres is making a name with a number of critically acclaimed projects and even more on the way. It has been nearly twenty years since comics could safely be dismissed as kids’ stuff. In 1986 three books changed the way Americans saw the medium. Two of them — Alan Moore’s Watchmen and Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns — brought a sense of gloomy realism to the superhero genre. The third, Art Spiegelman’s Maus, used cartoon conventions to tell of his father’s experience in the Holocaust, depicting Jews as mice and Nazis as cats. Magazines were suddenly full of stories about comics “growing up,” and the term “graphic novel” entered the literary lexicon. -->>

This March, I'm adding a twist to my St. Patrick's Day celebration by shaving my head at the local barbershop to raise money for a cure forchild hood cancer through an event called St. Baldrick's Day.

St. Baldrick's was dreamt up by a group of business executives in NewYork City in 2000, who had been observing St. Patrick's Day in the traditional way---pints at their favorite pub, with music and laughter in great supply. They decided to give their celebration a little twist and help young children diagnosed with cancer by recruiting volunteers to have their heads shaved in public in return for pledges of financial support.

What began with a goal of "$17,000 on the 17th of March," in five years raised nearly $7,000,000! The primary beneficiary of the event is CureSearch National Childhood Cancer Foundation, the only organization of its kind focused solely on supporting life-saving research and treatment of childhood cancer.

Unlike many of these children who face an uncertain future, I am lucky enough to know that my hair will grow back in just a couple of months. So, if a little off the top will help save the life of a child, it's a small price to pay.

four dead in Alberta 03/06/05

Usually I couldn't give a rat's ass about pot politics. I agree that it should be decriminalized, but other than that I just can't get that worked up over it. This is different.

Last week four young RCMP officers, younger than me, were ambushed by a psychotic child-molester and murdered. The killer also happened to be guarding a pot grow-op, apparently. This became a big issue at the 2005 Biennial Liberal Convention in Ottawa that ended today, with folks on both sides of the legalization/decriminalization issue working themselves up into a lather seeking to stake political claim to the four dead mounties. One of the more contemptible quotes goes like this, from RCMP Commissioner Giuliano Zaccardelli:

"Drugs are illegal and they're extremely dangerous and people have to understand that. And when you have people who are promoting the issue of safe drugs or [that] there are harmless drugs, I think that is something that we better understand is not the right way to go. We don't solve anything in society by legalizing things or by pretending they're not harmful to society."

Spoken like a true politician in today's world. Ambitious, dogmatic, callous, and barely literate. I'm sure there were plenty of equally insulting quotes from folks on the other side, but I couldn't find any.

Selon l'organisme qui pilote l'attribution de ces prix, les travaux des trois jurys de lecture (Bédélys « Or », Bédélys « Jeunesse » et Bédélys « Québec ») sont presque terminés et la liste des albums en nomination devrait être rendue publique sous peu. Rappelons que les albums éligibles doivent être disponibles sur le territoire du Québec au cours de 2004, et que les rééditions d'albums sont exclues. La remise des prix Bédélys 2004 est retardée au 16 mai 2005 pour une bonne raison : la cérémonie se tiendra en effet dans les locaux fraîchement construits de la Grande Bibliothèque du Québec, sise dans le Quartier latin de Montréal (angle de Maisonneuve et de Berri - métro Berri-UQÀM).

DC Lowers Canadian Comic Prices

Canadian comic readers will have a little extra money to put in the bank this week. Beginning this week with all of their "May 2005" dated releases, DC Comics has significantly lowered Canadian prices on all their regular format titles. The new prices are as follows:

$2.25 US comics will now be $3.00 CAN, a drop of 50 cents.
$2.50 US comics will now be $3.50 CAN, a drop of 35 cents.
$2.99 US comics will now be $4.00 CAN, a drop of 50 cents.

The lower prices are expected to include higher priced one-shots, prestige format titles, and trade collections.

Notably, this folows Marvel's CND price point drop last October.

Comic series offers an entertaining snapshot of '70s Québec culture

It's the summer of 1979 and average 18-year-old Paul, newly dropped out of high school, is working at a frustrating soul-crushing dead-end job at a print shop.
Suddenly faced with the reality of a nine-to-five existence in the adult world, Paul is feeling low. So low, in fact, that when he discovers his pet bird has suddenly dropped dead, it's the thing that pushes him over the edge. But when a friend offers him a counsellor position in a church-run summer camp, Paul drops everything at this chance for escape....

TORONTO, Ontario - Premiere Canadian comic book retailer The Beguiling is proud to present the 2005 Toronto Comic Arts Festival, occurring on Saturday May 28th and Sunday May 29th 2005 in Toronto, Canada. This will be the second gathering of International independent cartoonists, comic artists and graphic novelists under the TCAF banner, and it's bigger and better than before!

Featuring a diverse array of Canadian cartoonists and graphic novelists from around the world, The Toronto Comic Arts Festival (TCAF) will showcase these talents through gallery presentations, lectures and discussions, readings, and direct interaction with the artists themselves through the sale of their comics and original artwork. With a 'boom' for graphic novels that has seen coverage and acclaim for many participating graphic novelists from the likes of The New Yorker, The Globe and Mail, The New York Times, Time Magazine, and many many more, TCAF has expanded it's festival to include over 6,000 feet of floor space, more than 100 cartoonists, and 2 full days of programming and events right in the heart of Toronto's "Mirvish Village" shopping district!

Plans for the Festival were begun after seeing the remarkable interaction between the creative community and the public through comics festivals such as the MoCCA (Museum of Cartoon and Comic Art) Festival in New York (http://www.moccany.org/), and the more artist oriented European festivals Barcelona International Comic Festival (FICOMIC) or the Stripdagen festival in Haarlem, NL (http://www.stripdagenhaarlem.nl). There are many Canadian cartoonists recognized as among the best in the world, particularly in the field of alternative comics. TCAF is Canada's chance not only to promote its homegrown talent to visiting guests but bring many talents from the US and abroad to Toronto for the first time.

The Toronto Comic Arts Festival is proud to welcome the following guests of honour:

Jeff Smith: Smith is the star creator of the immensely popular comic book series BONE, originally published by his creator-owned imprint Cartoon Books. 2005 saw the publishing rights to BONE acquired by Scholastic Books, who have made BONE the flagship of their new young-readers graphic novel line GRAPHIX. Jeff Smith appears at The Toronto Comic Arts Festival courtesy of Scholastic Books, who are proud sponsors of the "Scholastic Children's Reading Tent" at the Festival.

Chester Brown: Chester Brown's graphic retelling of the life of historical Canadian anti-hero Louis Riel in the series LOUIS RIEL has drawn critical acclaim from the international comics press, matched only by the controversy surrounding the pending re-release of his surreal graphic novel ED THE HAPPY CLOWN [currently in development for the screen by Bruce MacDonald].

Darwyn Cooke: Internationally acclaimed storyboard artist for numerous Warner Brothers animation projects (including BATMAN ADVENTURES and BATMAN: BEYOND), Cooke broke new ground with his illustration-influenced graphic novels CATWOMAN: SELINA'S BIG SCORE and DC: THE NEW FRONTIER. Darwyn will be presenting his new Children's graphic novel, as yet untitled, at TCAF.

James Jean: Although still in his mid 20's, this School of Visual Arts, New York graduate has received comics' most prestigious award, an Eisner as well as the Gold Metal from the Society of Illustrators LA. His groundbreaking illustration and design work for numerous comics projects for DC Comics and Marvel Enterprises belie his start as an alternative comics creator with New York's prestigious Meathaus collective. Jean will be debuting his first-ever illustration collection, Process Recess at TCAF.

Gary Panter: Oklahoma-born illustrator, painter, designer and part-time musician, Gary Panter's fame began as the Emmy Award-wining head set designer for the successful kid/adult TV show Pee Wee's Playhouse, but his career as an underground cartoonist began much earlier. Gary Panter will be on hand at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival to officially launch his newest book, SATIROPLASTIC (Drawn & Quarterly), the first in a three-volume series of Gary Panter's sketchbooks (previewed in 2004's KRAMER'S ERGOT 5).

Seth: With his recent graphic novel CLYDE FANS being considered one of the ten best comics of 2004 by Time Magazine, Seth will be promoting the release of his new graphic novel WIMBLEDON GREEN at TCAF. In addition to his graphic novel work, Seth is an in-demand illustrator whose work regularly appears in The New Yorker and The Wall Street Journal.

Some of the other cartoonists of note at the festival include:

- Several other young graphic novelists picked as producing the best comics of 2004 by Time Magazine, including Jeffrey Brown (BIGHEAD), Sammy Harkham (KRAMER'S ERGOT), and Paul Hornschemeier (MOTHER, COME HOME).
- Noted cartoonist Paige Braddock, creator of the syndicated comic strip Jane's World.
- Ho Che Anderson, author of the comics biography of Martin Luther King Jr. King.
- Contributors to McSweeney's #13: The Graphic Novel Issue including David Heatley (DEADPAN) and Julie Doucet (DIRTY PLOTTE).
- Numerous contributors to Image's Flight anthology, including co-editors Kazu Kibuishi (Daisy Kutter) and Kean Soo (Secret Friends Society), and contributors Vera Brosgol, Hope Larson, Amy Kim Ganter, and Johanne Matte.
