Poker-faced Comic Fans
:: Posted by Bryan @ 4/27/2006 10:13:00 AM Over at THE BEAT, Heidi MacDonald has the low-down on the cancelled Poker tournament that was scheduled for the Toronto Paradise Comicon. According to organizer Kevin B. the laws are a bit murky:
So anyways, I mentioned that to the officer, and he tells me that yes, you can go and get a permit from the goverment, but it's meaningless because poker tournaments are not legal. Does that make sense to you? Why are they allowed to sell permits for things that are illegal?
In other con hype, The Toronto Star's Marlene Arpe profiles the Women of Comics event and talks to organizer Peter Fisico, who believes that women make comics differently than men:
"They bring a different approach to superheroes and non-traditional superheroes; a different outlook maybe, perspective ...They have a different art style, a different take. Maybe they're more artistic, maybe they think outside the box. I think they have more fun with it," he says, adding to emphasize his point: "I think they have more fun."
