Shahid Mahmood Profile

:: Posted by Bryan @ 4/09/2006 08:05:00 PM
Ryerson University's Eyeopener newspaper profiles Toronto political cartoonist Shahid Mahmood, who has been banned from flying on Air Canada flights.

Mahmood has had no luck in discovering the origin of his "no-fly" designation, although speculation ranges from racial profiling to identity theft to the nature of his cartoons. Despite an appearance before Parliament, discussions with an MP, and communiques from Ministry of Transportation and CSIS officials, he is no closer to an answer. According to the article,

His next step is a quasi-judicial tribunal with the Security Intelligence Review Committee (SIRC).
SIRC is the watchdog for CSIS and reviews complaints about the intelligence gatherer brought to its attention by people like Mahmood.For the cartoonist, the objective of this tribunal is to get answers about why he was singled out. "When I take this to federal court, they might ask, 'Did you explore all possible avenues,' and I have. They can't send me back and say, 'Try this.'"
