Chapters/Indigo Censors Spiegleman Harper's Issue
:: Posted by Bryan @ 5/29/2006 04:48:00 PM co: The Comics Reporter
According to a Globe and Mail article, Heather Reisman has decided not to sell or distribute the June 2006 issue of Harpers Magazine, a US publication. The issue contains a 10-page satirical article by cartoonist Art Spiegleman that reprints and rates the 12 infamous Mohammed cartoons originally printed last September in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten. The article also contains several cartoons by Speigleman and others, as well as reproductions of historic images.
In a memo obtained by The Globe and Mail that was e-mailed to Indigo managers yesterday about "what to do if customers question Indigo's censorship" of Harper's, employees are told to say that "the decision was made based on the fact that the content about to be published has been known to ignite demonstrations around the world. Indigo [and its subsidiaries] Chapters and Coles will not carry this particular issue of the magazine but will continue to carry other issues of this publication in the future."
Other publications like Free Inquiry and the Canadian Western Standard which have reproduced the cartoons were made available through the bookseller.
