Hope Larson, others reviewed
:: Posted by Bryan @ 4/28/2006 10:13:00 AM Just in time for the Women of Comics symposium at the Paradise con, some quickie reviews in Metro:
Female creators to hit T.O.
And for Dave, this quote from one of the symposium participants:
One of those working in the mainstream is Vancouver’s Sara “Samm” Barnes, the 2005 winner of the Joe Shuster Award for outstanding Canadian comic book creator and a nominee for the 2006 honour, to be handed out after the Comicon on Saturday night.
Barnes says more women creating comics is important, but more women and girls reading them is the real key.
“(Women) have a unique way of looking at things, we have a distinct voice and I think it only enriches the comic book industry,” says Barnes. “But I think we need to encourage more women to read (comic) books — no matter who wrote or drew or created those books.”

Poker-faced Comic Fans
:: Posted by Bryan @ 4/27/2006 10:13:00 AM Over at THE BEAT, Heidi MacDonald has the low-down on the cancelled Poker tournament that was scheduled for the Toronto Paradise Comicon. According to organizer Kevin B. the laws are a bit murky:
So anyways, I mentioned that to the officer, and he tells me that yes, you can go and get a permit from the goverment, but it's meaningless because poker tournaments are not legal. Does that make sense to you? Why are they allowed to sell permits for things that are illegal?
In other con hype, The Toronto Star's Marlene Arpe profiles the Women of Comics event and talks to organizer Peter Fisico, who believes that women make comics differently than men:
"They bring a different approach to superheroes and non-traditional superheroes; a different outlook maybe, perspective ...They have a different art style, a different take. Maybe they're more artistic, maybe they think outside the box. I think they have more fun with it," he says, adding to emphasize his point: "I think they have more fun."

"Draw a figure on a scrap of paper. Draw a box around it, put some words into its mouth – if it has a mouth, which is by no means necessary. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? This intrepid reporter thought so until he was about five minutes into the Comix Jam. "

Johnston gets Dog Award
:: Posted by Bryan @ 4/26/2006 01:23:00 AM Following up on a story we linked to last week, Lynn Johnston presented at an awards ceremony for dogs sponsored by a pet food company and was given an award herself for fictional dog Farley, who died heroically saving a comic strip character.
Among the dogs awarded for saving real humans were a blind dog and a crime-fighting dog named after the father of the mighty God of Thunder (and for whom Wednesday is named, making this story even more pertinent):
"Calgary Police Service Dog Odin and his partner, Constable Bill Dodd, were tracking an armed man considered extremely dangerous. When surrounded, the suspect suddenly jumped up from his hiding spot and took aim at Constable Dodd. With lightning speed, the German Shepherd was able to knock the gun from the suspect's hand and force him to the ground - saving the life of his handler and friend, Constable Bill Dodd, and protecting the lives of the other officers." Jellaby was serialized at Secret Friend Society along with Hope Larson's Salamander Dream. Salamander Dream was published last year by Oni.
According to Heidi MacDonald's article about Disney Children's books for Publisher's Weekly, "Jellaby is the story of Portia, a 10-year-old girl who finds a monster living behind her house. The story is projected to run 300 pages."

Shuster Hall of Fame
:: Posted by Bryan @ 4/24/2006 01:17:00 AM Toronto Paradise Comicon Hype: Shuster Awards Name 4 to Hall of Fame
This is an old story but I haven't seen much mention of it elsewhere.
The gang at the Shuster Awards have come up with a list of 4 new inductees. The Hall of Fame is picked by the awards organizers, whereas the actual awards for "Best Comic Book Penciller" etc are determined by a popular vote by fans.
Anyway, the 4 inductees into "The Canadian Comic Book Creator Hall of Fame / Temple de la renomme createur canadien de Bandes Dessinees" (the official title) are:
-Owen McCarron, the recently deceased Halifax cartoonist and promotional/educational comics publisher. McCarron contributed to some Marvel Comics superhero comics in the 70s (Supervillain TeamUP, Spidey Super-Stories) as well as doing work for other U.S. publishers.
-Win Mortimer --mostly known for his work with the Superman family of characters from the 40s to the 80s. Mortimer also created two newspaper adventure strips (David Crane and Larry Brannon) in the late-50s-early-60s that were circulated largely inside Canada.
-Dave Sim --cartoonist best known for his controversial essays and interview statements on the subject of women and religion. Over 30 years, he created a long series of graphic novels called Cerebus. The Shuster bio by John Bell says, "No other creator has made a greater contribution to the development of Canadian comics." Not sure what that means exactly.
-Jon St. Able --cartoonist and art director for the Maple Leaf comic book company during the 1940s. Illustrated humour strips and adventure for that company before moving to the U.S. in 1950. Shuster Awards
The actual awards for work done in 2005 are to be announced at a ceremony at the con on Saturday, April 29.

19th Annual FBDQ
:: Posted by Bryan @ 4/20/2006 06:48:00 AM The Festival de la BD Francophone du Quebec has begun. One of the largest comics-related events in Canada, the FBDFQ is held in Quebec City and shines a spotlight on Quebec comics, featuring several panel discussions, exhibits, artists signings, book launches and the second of the big Quebec comics awards, the Prix Bedeis Causa, which are to be handed out later today. There is a giant exhibitor hall of publishers and artists as well, like most comics conventions/book festivals. The big news so far is that Christophe Blain, the award-winning writer/cartoonist from France, has cancelled his appearance at the Festival.
Among the exhibits at the Festival are a History of the Euro-classic Blake and Mortimer, an exhibit of anti-racism comics, the Fanzine expo, and an exhibit celebrating the launch of the new Mecanique Generale project, "Plan Cartesian," an anthology of Montreal comics.
Sequential correspondent Pierre-Andre Dery, who was on a panel yesterday, will no doubt keep us updated. Meanwhile, there is a list of preview events, background and the latest news at his blog, Bedeka.org.
Round table discussions include:
Thursday 1pm- Fanzines and alt-comics, with Leif Tande, André Saint-Georges et Karl-Éric Thibault 4pm - A women and comics panel, with Line Arsenault, Élodie Boivin and more
Friday 6pm - Quebec cartoonists published in Europe , with Michel Falardeau, Jacques Lamontagne & François Miville-Deschênes
Sunday 10am - The State of Quebec BD, with Frédéric Gauthier, Jimmy Beaulieu & VoRo 3pm - "La place de la BD dans l'édition", with Jimmy Beaulieu, Claude Bordeleau and someone from the world of distribution.

Lost Canuck Classics
:: Posted by Bryan @ 4/20/2006 04:08:00 AM The amazing John Adcock has dug up another lost Canadian comic strip. Dickie Dare was a short running strip in the Winnipeg Grain Grower's Guide. Dale is most famous for his political cartoons and for his Doo Dads comic strip. Dickie was a kid's adventure strip at a time when such things were rare (think The Gumps, Orphan Annie, Minute Movies, and few others in the late-20s).

Shahid Mahmood Profile
:: Posted by Bryan @ 4/09/2006 08:05:00 PM Ryerson University's Eyeopener newspaper profiles Toronto political cartoonist Shahid Mahmood, who has been banned from flying on Air Canada flights.
Mahmood has had no luck in discovering the origin of his "no-fly" designation, although speculation ranges from racial profiling to identity theft to the nature of his cartoons. Despite an appearance before Parliament, discussions with an MP, and communiques from Ministry of Transportation and CSIS officials, he is no closer to an answer. According to the article,
His next step is a quasi-judicial tribunal with the Security Intelligence Review Committee (SIRC). SIRC is the watchdog for CSIS and reviews complaints about the intelligence gatherer brought to its attention by people like Mahmood. For the cartoonist, the objective of this tribunal is to get answers about why he was singled out. "When I take this to federal court, they might ask, 'Did you explore all possible avenues,' and I have. They can't send me back and say, 'Try this.'"

The jumble captures the range of the reference librarian’s responsibilities since he arrived at Concordia in 2003.
As reference librarian for the John Molson School of Business, Charbonneau is required to stay on top of the latest materials in accounting, decision sciences and management information systems. However, graphic novels are his research interest and, increasingly, his passion....

Gareth Lind at the Beguiling
:: Posted by Bryan @ 4/07/2006 10:20:00 AM
A surprisingly-large capacity crowd packed The Greenroom bar at the Bookshelf Cafe in Guelph last night for the launch of Attack of the Same-Sex Sleeper Cells, the first collection of the controversial Weltschmerz strip by cartoonist Gareth Lind. 75 people turned out to see Lind interviewed by Bookshelf comics liason Dan Evans and to have their books signed by the author and participate in a Q&A and slideshow.
Lind talked about his attachment to departed Premiere Mike Harris's nose, the narrative nature of the strip (he plans to publish a graphic novel), and the plague of blogs (ouch!).
The Weltschmerz booklaunch continues at the Beguiling in Toronto, Saturday April 8 2-5 pm

Allison Cole and Genevieve Castree April 15 @ Junc Gallery [ca/usa]
:: Posted by max @ 4/06/2006 01:29:00 AM Like the best mythological stories Genevieve Castree has an uncanny ability to manifest universal sentiments and truths yet in an accessible updated adaptation that balances comics with her own personal and abstract internal language.
The results are careful and delicate drawings of characteristically dark and sparsely populated universes that are poetic, surprising and lonely "the secrets of which one yearns, as always, to be a bit more privy to." For this show Castree uses that same sensitivity for an amazing new series of drawings many of which revolve around the theme of war.
Allison Cole known for her resolutely minimal comics which chronicle "the Strange details that make up everyday life." creates a series of wonderfully peculiar and intricate cut paper drawings.
Based on the 7 deadly sins. They have the familiar quality of children's book illustrations led astray and on closer inspection also reveal themselves to be an unlikely combination of idiosyncratic charm and tense, telling moments of desire frozen in time.
To say we are excited to have the opportunity present these drawings which we've posted online is an understatement.
Its going to be a really strong show so we hope to see you there!

Legendary Canadian Printer Bankrupt
:: Posted by Bryan @ 4/05/2006 04:50:00 AM Preney Print and Litho of Windsor, Ontario has gone out of business. A boutique printer of, among other things, comic books and graphic novels, Preney was a family-run business best known for printing most issues of Cerebus as well as the trade-paperbacks collecting Dave Sim's opus (elsewhere, I think, Sim has willed the Cerebus printing plates and related ephemera to the Preney brothers).
Rich Johnston reports on Preney's recent misadventures involving Eddie Campbell, Top Shelf, and From Hell originals. Johnston also hints that the end of Cerebus as a monthly series was the beginning of the end for the printer.
The remaining holdings of the business were recently auctioned here.

Jail time for man with cartoon child porn

Jail time for man with cartoon child porn Last updated Apr 4 2006 12:19 PM ADT CBC News
An American has been handed a 30-day jail sentence for bringing child pornography into Canada.
Dominic Sousa, 21, of Long Island, N.Y., was sentenced Tuesday after pleading guilty to charges of smuggling and possession of child pornography in Yarmouth provincial court.
Sousa was picked up by Canada Border Services officers last October after he got off a ferry in Yarmouth.
Blair MacDonald, a criminal investigator with the border services agency, said Sousa had about 13,000 images on his computer, including mostly cartoons but also three video clips and three stills involving real children.
"The fact that most of the images might have been in a form called anime doesn't lessen the prohibitive nature of these goods," MacDonald said.
The 30-day sentence is appropriate, he added, and sends a message that Canada doesn't tolerate the importation of such images.

D&Q Readies New Tatsumi Collection
:: Posted by dave h @ 4/04/2006 08:55:00 PM From www.publishersweekly.com. The photo below depicts Yoshihiro Tatsumi, left, and Adrian Tomine.
It looks as though 2006 is shaping up as the year of Yoshihiro Tatsumi, the pioneering manga-ka whose idiosyncratic and grimly naturalistic manga works had languished in semiobscurity for decades until the publication last fall of The Push Man and other Stories by Drawn & Quarterly. Not only will Tatsumi be honored as a special guest artist at this year’s San Diego Comic-con International, but Japanese horror novelist Koji Suzuki, whose bestselling J-horror novels The Ring and Dark Water have been turned into hit American movies, is writing the introduction to Abandon the Old in Tokyo, a new volume of Tatsumi stories that will be published by Drawn & Quarterly in September 2006. In addition, his work is featured on the cover of the spring issue of Paris Review and included in the same issue, and his work will also be used on the cover of Penguin Classics’ new edition of Rashomon. Tatsumi also has new editions of his works coming out in Japan and Europe, and he is close to completing an autobiography that will be called A Drifting Life in Gekiga... Full story

Speakeasy @ The Gladstone Hotel
:: Posted by Bryan @ 4/03/2006 06:28:00 AM From Diana Tamblyn comes a reminder of the monthly Speakeasy event at the Gladstone Hotel in Toronto. Speakeasy is a monthly networking gathering for creative types held the first Thursday of every month (the event has nothing to do with the now defunct Toronto comic book company). This month the focus is on comics:
Next Thursday, April 6th is a Group Art Show at the Gladstone Hotel, with a theme of what else? Comics!
'Everyone loves comics, right? Maybe you get your fix through a daily newspaper strip. Or maybe your tastes run to the more highbrow art comics from Europe. However you choose to look at them, comics offer a different, and often a fun way to look at life and art.
Well for anyone who has ever loved (or still loves) comics, it may come as a surprise to learn that Toronto is home to some of the best known comics artists in North America. We have an active and vibrant community putting out some of the highest quality comics to be found anywhere. The SpeakEasy Comics Show features an eclectic mix of Toronto's talented comics artists - from those who do newspaper strips and political cartoons, to underground comix and mainstream superhero comic books! The event promises to display an exciting cross-section of the comics community here in Toronto, as well as a glimpse into how good comics are made. As the old cliche goes, there really will be something for everyone.' http://www.speakeasyto.com/
Time & Space: Thursday April 6th, 8pm-Midnight The Gladstone Hotel, 1214 Queen West
This month's Featured Artists Kean Soo Jeff Lemire Zach Worton Brian McLachlan Attila Adorjany J. Bone Michael Cho Diana Tamblyn Ramon Perez and Rob Coughler Eric Kim Scott Hepburn Willow Dawson

Ren and Stimpy creator tries an online end-run to get back in the game
:: Posted by dave h @ 4/03/2006 02:21:00 AM from www.thestar.com Ren and Stimpy creator tries an online end-run to get back in the game Apr. 2, 2006. 01:00 AM TORONTO STAR Adults want sex. Kids want boogers and farts.
This, according to John Kricfalusi, the creator of Ren and Stimpy, is the key to making a billion dollars in the cartoon business. Unfortunately for Kricfalusi — and audiences — the networks disagree.
Since reinvigorating the animation industry in the early '90s with Ren and Stimpy, featuring the adventures of an angry little Chihuahua and his brain-dead feline sidekick, Kricfalusi has struggled to lure in the backers to get new projects off the ground. On several occasions, he says, network executives have been laughing so hard during his pitches they were "falling out of their chairs." But ultimately, they give him the big thanks, but no thanks.
"It's baffling," says Kricfalusi. "You don't know how hard it is to convince the networks to let you do what the audience wants. If you're going for kids, make every day Christmas. If you're going for the adults, give them pretty girls. Why aren't there pretty girls in cartoons? It's beyond me. Yeah, they're hard to draw. But if there are people in the business who can draw pretty girls, hire them..."
