O'Malley in Star

:: Posted by Bryan @ 5/31/2006 11:05:00 PM
Bryan Lee O'Malley fetaured on occasion of Scott Pilgrim Book 3 release. From this past weekend:

TheStar.com - Drawing on his Toronto roots

O'Malley, a self-described "27-year-old whiny Canadian cartoonist lazy musician," grew up reading and drawing comics, but admits that his "gateway drug" to the Japanese manga style was via that most addictive of mid-'90s afternoon TV staples, Sailor Moon.

"I used to try to draw exactly like that stuff, but I think I've sort of absorbed it and moved past it. I feel I've been growing into whatever my style is. It's really obvious if you look from the first volume to the third," O'Malley says.

His illustration style may be foreign, but much of the series' inspiration is closer to home. Familiar Toronto landmarks (Casa Loma and the Toronto Reference Library have made appearances) play a major role in O'Malley's books as Scott and his pals flit about the city. While local readers might delight in seeing Lee's Palace (also in Vol. 2) and Honest Ed's (in Vol. 3) pop up, readers elsewhere find our edifices a bit, well, cartoonish.

"Everyone's like, `Is Honest Ed's real? What is this circus place?' In the comic, I make it explode, so when I was back in Toronto recently, I was like, `It's still here!' I'd been living in my own little world," O'Malley laughs.

Chapters/Indigo Censors Spiegleman Harper's Issue

:: Posted by Bryan @ 5/29/2006 04:48:00 PM
co: The Comics Reporter

According to a
Globe and Mail article, Heather Reisman has decided not to sell or distribute the June 2006 issue of Harpers Magazine, a US publication. The issue contains a 10-page satirical article by cartoonist Art Spiegleman that reprints and rates the 12 infamous Mohammed cartoons originally printed last September in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten. The article also contains several cartoons by Speigleman and others, as well as reproductions of historic images.

In a memo obtained by The Globe and Mail that was e-mailed to Indigo managers yesterday about "what to do if customers question Indigo's censorship" of Harper's, employees are told to say that "the decision was made based on the fact that the content about to be published has been known to ignite demonstrations around the world. Indigo [and its subsidiaries] Chapters and Coles will not carry this particular issue of the magazine but will continue to carry other issues of this publication in the future."

Other publications like Free Inquiry and the Canadian Western Standard which have reproduced the cartoons were made available through the bookseller.

Nik Kowsar Speaks

:: Posted by Bryan @ 5/25/2006 09:03:00 PM

A brief Q&A with cartoonist Nikahang Kowsar
By Bryan Munn

When news broke last week about the sentencing of exiled Iranian cartoonist Nik Kowsar, Sequential contacted Nik (who now lives in Toronto) for a quick update. Kowsar was found guilty in absentia by an Iranian court for a cartoon he drew critical of clerical attitudes to press freedom in Iran in 2000.

Sequential: How do you feel about being tried in absentiaand what do you think about the verdict? Do you recognize the legitimacy of the Tehran court that sentenced you?

Kowsar: Actually I didn't break the law to be arrested, prosecuted or even sentenced. I almost lost my life, family, job, career, friends and everything because of the hardliners reaction.

Sequential: Would you care to restate your case and the intention of the cartoon that started this?

Kowsar: When there isn't a jury, there won't be a fair trial, and how could I restate the case when the system doesn't recognize my right to have a fair trial?

Sequential: How do you feel about the state of press freedom in Iran today?

Kowsar: On press freedom, we have a joke; "There is freedom of speech, but there is no freedom after speech!"

Sequential: What do you hope to acheive with your work in Canada? Do you feel you are still in danger or that your family is?

Kowsar: I came to Canada to escape the serious death threat I received in 2003.

I have tried to stay far from issues that might threaten my family, but I've always thanked God for keeping them in good hands.

Letters of support can be sent to Nik through his blog. The government of Iran is determined to crack down on any dissenting or controversial views: Recently, another cartoonist, Mana Neyestani, was imprisoned in Iran. Kowsar notes that "Mana is an old friend of mine. We used to work together for years." Kowsar talked with Tom Spurgeon today about Mana's arrest and the latest news out of Iran.

Comic Book Bin Call for Submissions

:: Posted by Bryan @ 5/23/2006 01:50:00 AM
Herve St.Louis has issued a call for submissions for a proposed Canadian comics-themed section of his website:

Hello Everyone. For the past 4 years, the Comic Book Bin has published a Web magazine about comics. I believe it is the largest and most visited Canadian site, until proven wrong. Currently only 5% of our audience is Canadian but that 5% is dear to me for obvious reasons.

Although we have interviewed many Canadian creators over the years, we still don't have a specific Canadian section about comics. We don't get many invitations to Canadian comic book events and conventions. Well we won't accept that anymore.

We will soon be adding a Canadian section to our Comics Columns similar the our existing Manga and Euro sections. We invite all Canadian creators and publishers to send us review material, news items and suggestions. We also welcome any volunteer who would like to help us develop this Canuck section. I want Canadians to feel wlecome at the Comic Book Bin.

Some background info. Yes, we cover major publishers and super heroes and that won't change, and won't apologize for that. But we also cover a lot of comics (I don't like the word small press, alternative or independent - it's diminishing and in opposition to something else). We even cover comics from the Middle East.

Truth be told, only two of us at the Bin are Canadians... I'm Canadian, live in Montreal and created the Bin. Canadians have a genuine unique vision to offer but are often lumped into American or European products. We also recognize that there are many sites covering Canadian books, like Sequential or Bedeka. They occupy specific niches and do great work. We're not looking to compete with any of them. We're just another place where you can promote your books and reach your audience.

Don't be shy. Our full address is below, where you can send any material our way. As soon as there's a critical mass of material, I'll lauch the section. However, if there is no initial and continued support for this gesture, we will not build this section.

Comic Craze

:: Posted by Bryan @ 5/22/2006 02:09:00 AM
A new exhibit of comics culture at the Banff Summer Arts Festival, curated by Sylvie Gilbert. Reviewer James Davidge notes,

Their main exhibit, Comic Craze, features over 400 samples of Canadian independant comics in a reading friendly environment. They have erected numerous pillars with shelves at various heights to display the comics with areas where people are encouraged to sit and read. It was pretty unique for a visual arts gallery space.

Other event include a jam and the exhibit "Conceptual Comics."

The 9th Art is rolling to boil with creative energy at this time in Quebec. Indeed, no other period in the Quebecois history of comics has known a critical mass of good books available as there is now.

Started in 1999 the third opus of the series Cyclops, Plane Cartesian wants to be a tool which will make it possible to the neophyte to discover (an admittedly subjective selection of) some of the authors most representative of this wealth of talent. Fifty notable Quebec authors approach the topic of the City & urbane life from at times astonishing angles - the bond with the theme becoming thin in places, but always relevant: Withdrawal of civilization, awakening on the inhuman coldness of the other, & the difficult communication with. Romantic (or not) memories related to such & such city, exploration of the paradox of the multitude of piled up loneliness, approach more abstract, formal, ludic, poetic or traditional, is delirious complete, etc.

DTL2

:: Posted by Bryan @ 5/19/2006 08:50:00 PM
Suley Fattah with a note about the new Cancer Research benefit book (thanks to Diana Tamblyn):

It’s done!

Finally, our new book, DRAWING THE LINE AGAIN (DTLA) is now AVAILABLE!! We sold over fifty at our “comic” launch April 28-30th during the Paradise Comic Convention. We’ve moved over 500 into various shops and businesses this past week –on consignment sales.

Recently, DTLA received a 5-star review in Metro News!! We were dumbfounded with the pleasing review. Here's a link to the online METRO article... http://www.metronews.ca/books_review.asp?id=15961

The new book is truly bigger and better! It saw over 60 artists involved and has 25% more in its 152 pages! We are proud to say that the production value has gone up as we've put all our knowledge and experience from the first book to use here. Thanks to our print sponsor, Kasra of VEI Press, the overall physical quality is better, too. The front cover is by Moebius [world-renown for his ‘Heavy Metal’ comics and for his contributions to sci-fi films]. The back cover is by Götting, who paints the French Harry Potter covers.

Our fundraising mandate continues: 100% of the proceeds of the sale of our books and donations equally benefit Sick Kids Foundation and the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation – all to conquer cancer. Please let your friends and family know that they can get the books on-line at www.benefitcomic.com or from you! Please, spread the word and don’t hold back.

Our asking price is still $20 and since we still have some of Drawing The Line books we're offering a special, namely: buy both books for $30. The first book has raised over $13,000 [and counting]. This is the suggested price. Of course, any size gift is always appreciated.

I just want to say, how abundantly clear it is to me that this project could not have happened with out your support, love and generosity. I thank you from the bottom of my heart! This project has made a profound difference to how I live my life and how I look at cancer: though it is something that I have and live with, the day will come when we conquer it! Let’s continue the journey…together.

Kowsar Tried in Absentia

:: Posted by Bryan @ 5/17/2006 02:59:00 PM
The Comics Reporter links to a report by the AAEC about the trial of exiled Iranian cartoonist Nik Kowsar. Kowsar fled Iran after being arrested for publishing a cartoon critical of Iranian clerics and their stance towards press freedom in 2000. While the crocodile-shaped cleric in his cartoon was not intended as a specific satire, it was widely assumed he was targeting the famous Ayatullah Mesbah-e Yazdi. Facing death threats and a trial, Kowsar accepted an invitation from the Association of Canadian Editorial Cartoonists to attend their convention in 2001. Kowsar now lives in Canada.

In a Tehran court, Judge Husseinian sentenced Kowsar to four months imprisonment on the charge of "insulting Mohammad Taghi Mesbah Yazdi head of Imam Khomeini Training Institute, insulting Ali Larijani, Head of IRIB (Iranian Official Radio & TV), and other dignities and high ranking clergy and officials of the establishment," according to a report by the Association of Iranian Journalists.

Kowsar maintains a blog and contributes to a new blog on the Danish cartoons created by Bruce MacKinnon of the Association of Canadian Editorial Cartoonists.

You can read Kowsar's own story here.

Not sure of many details, but according to a post on the Comics Journal Boards, there is a new diploma-granting comics course in Toronto. No mention if this is an accredited college program and the website is under construction:

Max the Mutt™ Animation School in downtown Toronto announced today that their school has just become the first in Toronto to be able to offer an in-depth 2-year diploma program in Comic Books and Graphic Novels. It is being called: Illustration For Sequential Arts: Comic Books and Graphic Novels. Sid Barron, 1917-2006

:: Posted by Bryan @ 5/10/2006 05:38:00 AM

"Poet of the mundane"

Cartoonist Sid Barron, dubbed "the poet of the mundane" by Robert Fulford, has died in Victoria at age 88.

Barron was one of the funniest and most stylistically distinctive cartoonists to emerge in the post-war editorial cartoon world.

Born in Toronto in 1917 to a British mother and an un-identified Belgian soldier father, Barron was adopted by his maternal aunt and raised in Victoria, B.C.

With very little art training, Barron found work as a commercial illustrator and sign painter. According to Peter Desbarats and Terry Mosher in "The Hecklers", during the Depression he did some illustration work for Toronto's Star Weekly "until the paper discovered that for pennies it could buy cratefulls of illustrations that appeared originally in various American publications."

During the Second World War, Barron found work in the short-lived Canadian comic book industry, producing strips for Educational Comics' Canadian Heroes title. After the war, he received art training for a short period in Detroit and later found work across Canada.

In 1959 he began working for The Victoria Times as an editorial cartoonist. In 1961 he began a life-long association with the Toronto Star. He also found work with The Albertan in Calgary as well as with Maclean's magazine.

Barron's relatively mild yet satirically insightful topical cartoons of social mores and suburbia have been likened to the UK's Giles but his closest Canadian counterpart, aesthetically and geographically was probably Len Norris of Vancouver. The editorial cartoons of Doug Wright used a similar approach. Barron's cartoons utilized a clear line and elegant, unexagerated figures placed in extremely cluttered backgrounds full of sight gags and signs, a mix of styles akin to the chaos of Wil Elder's Mad cartoons crossed with the sophistication of a New Yorker gag. His two most distinctive trademarks were the sardonic banner-trailing biplane and a bored-looking, sign-toting Cheshire cat.

Barron lived a somewhat bohemian lifestyle with his artist wife Jesi, raising several children in Victoria and on the road. In later years, the couple exhibited paintings with a West Coast theme.

A life-long smoker, Barron suffered from declining health for some years. He died in hospital Saturday, April 29.

Shusters Corrections

:: Posted by Bryan @ 5/10/2006 05:23:00 AM
We received the following email from James Waley at the Shuster Awards:

Saw your April 24th post at SEQUENTIAL regarding the CANADIAN COMIC BOOK CREATOR AWARDS' HALL OF FAME 2006 inductees and I thought I should correct a couple misconceptions in your following statement ---

"The Hall of Fame is picked by the awards organizers, whereas the actual awards for "Best Comic Book Penciller" etc are determined by a popular vote by fans."

First off, the H of F inductees were chosen this year, and last year, not by the "awards organizers" but by a learned committee of comic book historians that debated their choices over a number of months until they arrived at a final selection that they felt were most deserving of this honour. These are the members of this committee, many whose names I'm sure you're familiar with ---

HALL OF FAME SELECTIONS COMMITTEE

John Bell is the author of the book, CANUCK COMICS, and the man behind the National Archives’ two comic book websites: GUARDIANS OF THE NORTH and BEYOND THE FUNNIES

Phil Latter is an avid comic collector with a particular interest and knowledge of comic book history (and one of the world’s biggest Zorro experts).

Stephen Lipson is a longtime comic collector with probably the biggest collection of “Canadian Whites” outside of the National Archives.

Henry Mietkiewicz is a former Toronto Star reporter (known for his final interview with Joe Shuster in 1992) and comics expert.

Robert Pincombe is a writer for Roy Thomas’ ALTER-EGO magazine and a comic collector with a particular interest in the history of Canadian creators (also, the man that found Fred Kelly, the creator of the original Mr. Monster --- much to Michael T. Gilbert’s delight!).

Secondly, I'm not sure which awards event in Canada has a "Best Comic Book Penciller" category but it's definitely not the CCBCA / the JOE SHUSTER AWARDS and as for being determined by a "popular vote by fans" that's true, to a certain extent, but that's only after the final nominees on the ballot have been hotly debated and rigorously determined by a nationwide nominating committee made up of comic journalists, collectors, retailers, and, yes, "fans" that burn up the internet with their emails as they narrow their choices down to a manageable list of finalists to be voted on.

It's not a perfect system, to be sure, but so far it seems to be working okay --- though we're always looking at ways to improve it in the future.

In closing, thanx for taking an interest in the CCBCA and for taking the time to post the news about our latest H of F inductees.

Calgary Con Wraps Up

:: Posted by Bryan @ 5/09/2006 06:13:00 PM
Sequential only got word of this event after it ended, but the Comic and Entertainment Expo held in Calgary this past weekend seems to have been a great success. Lots of local artists and fans were represented, including members of the Calgary Comics Jam, Animethon 13, the Udon group, etc, etc.

Some criticisms: Maple Ink Comics Blog: FANTASTIC!

Today is Free Comic Book Day

:: Posted by Dave Howard @ 5/06/2006 06:16:00 AM
Saturday May 6 is Free Comic Book Day. Here's something from http://torontoist.com
2006_05_05freecomics.jpg

Comic Books Want To Be Free!

Tomorrow, May 6th, 2006, is worldwide Free Comic Book Day! That means pretty much what you think it means: fine comic book shops across the globe are dispensing comics to those who wander through their doors. The event, designed to celebrate indie comic stores, is now in it's fifth year.

from the website:

Comic books are an original American art form, created in the early days of the twentieth century. They are fun to read, featuring a wide range of diverse storylines that capture the imagination of the readers, and have survived: the dominance of radio, the ubiquity of television, the spread of color and sound motion pictures, the rise of videogames, and the Internet. That's worth celebrating.

Not all comics are free, though, click here for the list of titles you can snag, a list which includes the new third volume of Toronto's own Scott Pilgrim.

You can find a list of participating stores and their locations by typing yr postcode into the form at the website. (It includes the usual supsects though, The Beguiling, 1,000,000 Comix, Silver Snail, The Watcher, and a few more!)

Hung no. 2: Drawn Onward launch on May 25, 2006

:: Posted by max @ 5/04/2006 05:48:00 PM

Co Shannon Gerard

Hello again!
So, Guess What? Hung no.2; Drawn Onward is done! I got her back from the printers last week (after some creative negotiations) and she's lookin' fine. I'm holding a launch party for the book on May 25.
In case you can't open the Jpeg below, here are the details:
Hung no. 2: Drawn Onward launches on May 25, 2006
@ Rancho Relaxo (300 College Street) in Toronto
With musical guests Live Country Music
Doors are at 8, $6 cover includes the book
(if you already have a copy, it should include a ticket that'll get you in to the party for free!)
Details on the book including sample pages can be found on the Books Page at http://www.shannongerard.org/pages/books.html
For information on Live Country Music, and to hear MP3s, check out their website-- http://www.livecountrymusic.ca/
Hung no.2 includes a fold out board game: Play-at-home Hipster Bingo!
I'm also Defending My Thesis (an Interdisciplinary Studies MA in comics which includes my own work on Hung nos. 1-3) on Friday May 12. The Defense is open for any interested parties to attend. I'll be giving a brief talk about the Hung series and then answering questions for 2 hours. It sounds kind of boring, I know, and I guess it is unusual to invite people to attend via email, but in case you're interested, here are the details. I'd be happy to see you there as well:
Friday May 12, 10 am til noon, 278 York Lanes, York University.
Thanks for reading!
Shannon

Midweek roundup

More on Shusters
The embarassing display above is part of a report in Metro about the Shuster Awards:

Just three weeks shy of his 50th birthday, longtime Kitchener resident Dave Sim — known for his pioneering self-published 300-issue comic-book series Cerebus — belted out the song My Way in front of a crowd of about 75 guests, fans and fellow creators and received a standing ovation for both his singing prowess and his lifetime of work. “It was my only chance to ever do that,” Sim laughed after the ceremony.

“Of course, that song is always associated with Frank Sinatra and it was nice for me to be able to remind everybody that it was by one of our guys — Paul Anka.”

Sim then presented the 2006 Outstanding Canadian Cartoonist Award to Halifax’s Bryan Lee Malley in a symbolic passing of the torch.

Happy May Day

:: Posted by Bryan @ 5/01/2006 02:44:00 AM

For May Day, a few notes:

1. The holiday had it's start in Canada in 1872 in a protest against the imprisonment of members of a typographers union. From a pagan festival, May Day became associated with the Left and several important events, like the Chicago Haymarket Riot, have occurred on this date.

2. Outside of Ian Orenstein, there haven't been too many comics in English about strikes or May Day --try to find General Strike comics.

3. Since there are several anti-war protests scheduled today, it is only fitting to link to info on Sabrina Jones' (WW3 Illustrated, Wobblies) Mixed Signals anti-recruitment comics.

4. 2004 protests in Berlin featured a spray-can-weilding Lisa Simpson.

5. The climax of the first volume of Berlin (City of Stones) by Jason Lutes is the May Day riots of 1929.
