Arts Funding Update
:: Posted by Bryan @ 9/23/2008 01:00:00 PM Lagging behind coverage of the Canadian economy and the $22 Billion war in Afghanistan, mainstream media coverage of the arts and publishing/Canadian culture is generally a distant third. That being said, isn't it ironic how the normally reactionary and knee-jerk conservative Globe and Mail has traditionally had a bang-up arts reporting department?
Not only did they report on the federal government's populist spin on cuts to arts funding awhile ago, now they have also now crunched the numbers on the Harper government's actual cuts to arts funding, as reported in this past weekend's edition.
(graphic: this great Pascal Blanchet poster reminds me of the best anti-fascist propaganda from the 1930s and 40s. Thanks to Chris Butcher for the link.)

Last of the Summer Wine: Summer Reading Survey
:: Posted by Bryan @ 9/23/2008 12:16:00 AM With apologies to Eric Theriault, today was so summer-y that I thought I'd post this final response to the summer reading survey. Stay tuned for the Sequential Holiday Wish List!
Today's Summer Reading Survey comes to us via Janet Hetherington, a comics writer who I first became familiar with thru the pages of old comics that she wrote to as a young fan:
1. Name and occupation (contact info/website/publisher's website). My name is Janet Hetherington (www.best-destiny.com), and I'm a writer, editor and artist. I studied Journalism at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada, and currently work as an editor with a government agency. I also write for Animation World Network. In my comics career, I wrote, drew and self-published ETERNAL ROMANCE, a supernatural comic book series that parodied 1950s-70s love comics and earned a place in Trina Robbins' book, The Great Women Cartoonists. I also scripted ELVIRA, MISTRESS OF THE DARK (Claypool Comics) for six years. I have frequently collaborated with artist Ronn Sutton on such projects as JANNIE WEEZIE (daily newspaper strip, Ottawa Citizen), SPINNERETTE (Millennium Comics), PERF & GAUGE (Canada Post), FIVE ALARM CHARLIE (Sky-Dog) and numerous ELVIRA stories. I received Canada's Aurora Award for excellence in science fiction and fantasy in 1999. 2. What is your latest project (ie, what are you hyping)? I currently have a contemporary romance story called "The List" in GIRLS DRAWN WILD (Happy Harbor Comics, July 2008), a new Canadian anthology published to benefit women in crisis. My supernatural comedy comics creation MONSTER LOVE was selected at a Top 50 entry in the 2008 Comic Book Challenge from Platinum Studios. Mini-movie versions of "The List" and "Monster Love" can be seen online on my YouTube Channel (with music by Ottawa composer Derek Audette). In addition, people can read my PYXIE CHIX and FOUR EYES BUT ONE HEART comics at www.drunkduck.com. I just completed two Wonder Woman illustrations for Andy Mangels' third annual WONDER WOMAN DAY, to raise funds for women's shelters. I hope everyone will check out the contributions by all the artists when they are posted online and participate in the auction, which will be taking place on October 26, 2008. 3. Please provide a list of books you have recently read or are planning to read. They don't have to be comic books. (In fact, we would almost prefer they weren't.) Any number of books is fine. Please feel free to comment (ie, Why are you reading these books? What did you think?). I enjoy good writing in escapist novels.I read everything by Stephen King, and my boyfriend Ronn Sutton often buys those books for me as gifts. The most recent one by King that I read was DUMA KEY. I buy a lot of paperbacks at yard sales and then send them to my mother to read. I just finished reading TURNING ANGEL, a thriller by Greg Iles. Ronn and I recently watched the movie adaptation of 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, which was quite good. I read the source material, the graphic novel by Steve Niles and Ben Templesmith, which Ronn borrowed from the library. I am also working on some screenplays, so I have SCREENWRITING FOR DUMMIES permanently open at my desk in my home studio office. Plus, it may sound weird, but I love reading the dictionary. 4. Please list any upcoming events/upcoming publications. Your next project? As I mentioned, I am currently working on some screenplays, particulary in the horror-comedy genre. I am practising writing the perfect logline -- not easy! I also write for Animation World Network ( www.awn.com) and will be covering the Ottawa International Animation Festival as well as Montreal's ADAPT digital arts conference, both in September. I have some other things simmering that I can't chat about just yet. Thanks for asking! Labels: summer reading

Autumn News Link-up
:: Posted by Bryan @ 9/22/2008 01:05:00 AM Some quick links about comics in the mainstream press for the first Monday of Fall:
- Dalhousie prof Anthony Enns will be teaching a comics course in a January and is profiled here.
- It seems like there have been at least one or two profiles of Lynn Johnston every week since she started FBOFW over at the beginning of the month. I don't generally link to them since I've been assuming they all cover the same ground. Here's the latest one.
- As we reported last week, Chester Brown has entered the federal political arena. Here is an interview from Eye Weekly.
- A trio of D+Q titles are reviewed in the Montreal Gazette.

Saturday: Matt Forsythe at Strange Adventures, Halifax
:: Posted by Bryan @ 9/20/2008 01:49:00 AM from the D+Q press release:
OJINGOGO'S MATT FORSYTHE AT STRANGE ADVENTURES THIS SATURDAY 9/20/9! SLIDE SHOW & SIGNING
Saturday, September 20th 2009, 7:00 PM
Strange Adventures 5262 Sackville Street Halifax, NS (902)425-2140
As featured on the cover of the Montreal Mirror!
ABOUT OJINGOGO: Nominated for 2 Eisner Awards for best web comic, winner of an Expozine award, and hailed by the Montreal Mirror, Matthew Forsythe's Ojingogo is already highly anticipated. Exuding simplicity in design and narrative, Ojingogo is an illustrated, dreamscape of abstracts and events. The otherworldly pantomime about a girl, her squid, and the creatures and calamities they experience together, is an intrinsically expressive and deeply rewarding journey. Drawing from Forsythe's Korean influences, Ojingogo is accessible for all ages, tossing aside traditional narrative conventions in favour of creating its own world, language and rules that anyone can find a home of their own in.
ABOUT MATT FORSYTHE: Matt Forsythe was born in Toronto in 1976. He studied politics and religion at McMaster University and has worked variously as a database programmer in Dublin, a motorcycle courier in London, and a kindergarten teacher in Seoul, South Korea.
Ojingogo was originally serialized as a Web comic in 2004. It was nominated for an Eisner Award in 2005 (Best Digital Comic) and featured in the "Year's Best Graphic Novels, Comics, and Manga." Ojingogo was nominated again for an Eisner Award (Best Digital Comic) and won an Expozine Award (Best English Comic) in 2006.
He works at the National Film Board of Canada in Montreal and teaches journalism at Concordia University. His illustrations have also appeared in a variety of magazines and periodicals including the Wall Street Journal, Chickadee Magazine, and Kayak: Canada's History Magazine for Kids.

Graphic novelist Seth (It's a Good Life If You Don't Weaken) has two gallery shows running concurrently in Kitchener, Ontario starting this Friday. Both shows revolve around his work-in-progress Clyde Fans graphic novel and are 3-dimensional renderings of the story's setting, the fictional Ontario city of Dominion.
The Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery hosts a life-size reproduction of Dominion's movie palace, described by Seth as "the NORTH STAR TALKING PICTURE HOUSE and it is a working movie theatre (showing films inside)."
At the same time, the Render Gallery in Kitchener is displaying the entire miniature cardboard city of Dominion --"along with Alfred Holden's cardboard city of BEAVER", Seth notes. Seth's city has been considerably expanded since its last outing at the Art Gallery of Ontario.

Chester Brown Runs for Office
:: Posted by Bryan @ 9/16/2008 12:06:00 PM Cartoonist and graphic novelist Chester Brown has begun a bid for political office in Toronto. A long-time libertarian (following a youthful flirtation with anarchism), the creator of the Louis Riel and Ed the Happy Clown graphic novels has been persuaded to throw his hat into the ring in the upcoming federal election. Although not always evident in his art, Chester's economic views are well-known to anyone who has had a political discussion with him.
Chester intends to run for MP in Toronto's Trinity-Spadina area on the Libertarian Party ticket. To get his name on the ballot, he needs 100 signatures from eligible voters in the Trinity-Spadina riding. A nomination form is available at The Beguiling until Friday September 19.Labels: real world

Cartoonist Sues Animator
:: Posted by Bryan @ 9/09/2008 06:00:00 AM As the CBC reports here, the case of Claude Robinson v Cinar has finally wound its way to Superior Court in Quebec. Cartoonist Robinson sued the animation company in 1996, accusing them of plagiarizing his idea for an animated series based on Daniel Dafoe's Robinson Crusoe, claiming that Cinar's Robinson Sucroe was based on a proposal to adapt his 1982 character Robinson Curiosite. The writing for the Cinar character is credited to a pseudonym for the wife of the studio founder, Micheline Charest.
According to the artist, he created the character in 1982 and then proposed a series in 1986. Cinar produced Robinson Sucroe in 1995 and Robinson sued them for $2.53 million in 1996. Because Cinar has had problems over the years (detailed in this new book), including tax fraud charges and a being sold to Nelvana, the case has been delayed until now. Robinson is now seeking $10 million.

Lost Chartier
:: Posted by Bryan @ 9/08/2008 05:00:00 AM Albert Chartier (1912-2004) was one of Canada's greatest strip cartoonists, best-known for his extremely long-running strip Onesime, but most of his work is sadly out of print, with the exception of a few anthologies that have reprinted some strips over the last decade. As we reported earlier, the good news is that Les 400 Coups, a division of Montreal comics publisher Mecanique Generale, is publishing a collection of Chartier's sexy girl strips this fall. The book is called Albert Chartier: Une Piquant Petite Brunette and collects tons of the risque, mostly-silent strips that Chartier syndicated to one or two papers in Canada back in the 1960s. The bad news is that the publisher has some gaps in their collection and is making an appeal to collectors and archivists to help fill the gaps. Read the appeal from Jimmy B over at the bdq boards --translated here. (The best thing about the translation: apparently, thanks to this risque strip collection, we will now "be able to harness the peter.")
As well, the family of Chartier is circulating a form letter to the head of Canada Post, requesting a stamp in honour of the cartoonist's 100th birthday in 2012. The full text is also at the link, as are many examples of the strips in question.Labels: bd, comic strips, comics history, help wanted, publishing

Back to School Blogging: News and News-y Links
:: Posted by Bryan @ 9/02/2008 06:11:00 AM Armed with fresh supplies and cool clothes, Sequential goes Back to School, not with a bang but with a whimper:
Big Bully Dept: A Saskatoon police artist has created a comic book about bullying for Grade 5 students. And no, it's not about how cops are big bullies.
History Class Dept: Get ready to be schooled by that peerless archivist and historian John Adcock. John gets the goods on old Canadian cartoonists at his blog, Punch in Canada. Most recent finds: work by Giant of the North JW Bengough.
Freshmen I, or Best New Blog Dept: I found this new blog by a comic shop employee, Comic Store Earwig, very entertaining. Candid. Spiteful. Jaundiced. Funny. Start with the post on FanExpo and work you way back.
Civics, or Arts Cuts Dept: This list of cuts made to arts programs and funding by Harper's Conservatives is interesting. For instance, I only found out about culturescope.ca after it was cancelled. Likewise, the $3.8 million culture.ca --the total cut is $40 million so far.
Graphic Literature Dept: Check out the photos from Matt Forsythe's book launch at the Drawn and Quarterly store.
Guidance Counselling, or Stripper Profile Dept: Ottawa's Brian Boychuk (Chuckle Bros) is interviewed while on vacation in PEI.
Freshmen II or Second-best New Blog Dept: Over at the Walrus, Sean Rogers has started bloggin about comics for a feature called Four-Colour Words. I've hesitated to link to him until now since all of his posts have had something to do with the Wright Awards (as do I). But his latest is actually a negative review of two of the award winners (and worse, I actually agree with him about one of the books --can you guess which one?).Labels: links

If you are relaxing today after your titanic struggles against evil (like Herbie, above), why not catch up on some reading?
