The latest (and last) issue of upstart general interest comic zine Comic Foundry has a cover feature on Canada's Greatest Living Cartoonist of The Month, Bryan Lee O'Malley. As well, the issue devotes 2 pages to a Kate Beaton interview and Jillian Tamaki participates in one of those lame roundtable panel discussions where the participants have no contact with each other. The issue also features a best of 2008 list, tons of reviews, and more interviews with superhero creators and art comics nerds. 2. The latest issue of CNQ (Canadian Notes and Queries) is a wonderful anniversary issue (75 issues/40 years) that looks ahead another quarter century to 2034 to see what the cultural landscape of Canada may look like. Smart writers from various fields write short essays on the future of books, movies, newspapers, science fiction, poetry, cities, and even Canada itself. And graphic novels are not left out. Cartoonist-poet Sherwin Tjia contributes a great 2-page strip that artfully and obliquely takes on a tour of the graphic novel world of the future (hint: Bernie Mireault doesn't live in Canada anymore). 3. Broken Pencil #42 features a great history of tabloid newspapers in Canada, lots of minicomics reviews, and the great regular strip by Jason Turner where Turner draws comics about all the comics and zines he buys.Labels: publishing, zines - Stumble It! - Leave a comment!| 0comments - Monday, February 23, 2009 The C-List: Dispatches from the Land of Mu ![]()

The Prix Bedelys is a group of comics prizes awarded by the non-profit Promo 9e Art, and recognize French-language comics from Quebec and elsewhere. The awards will be handed out later this year. With the exception of the controversial and reputedly funny Burquette, the nominated Quebec books are among the most beautiful-looking French-language comics I've seen this year. - Stumble It! - Leave a comment!| 0comments - Point of Sale and pricing in CND vs USD. Often the US price is cheaper so will anyone care?Co:journalista Ever on the lookout for a scandal Herve St-Louis has posted a speculative piece about the legality of selling books that have no marked Canadian price on them and POS technology. "Since January 2008, Diamond Comics, the largest comic book distributor in North America has required that all products it distributes include barcodes that can be scanned by its staff and by North American comic book retailers. Diamond Comics has aggressively encouraged comic book retailers to adopt its point of sale (POS) scanning technology. Many Canadian retailers have adopted the scanning technology in their stores. However, many product vendors have stopped including specific Canadian prices on their products. In turn, Canadian retailers have begun using American prices on products ordered through Diamond Comics. Many comic book retailers use Diamond Comics exclusively as their distribution channel. Many stores now inform their customers that all prices are quoted in US dollars and adjusted at the checkout point to match the current Canadian/US dollar exchange rate."Not so sure this is a burning issue, is there any real energy amongst consumers to pursue this? I'm no expert on the topic but there are a fair number of magazines and other items that have taken to not including Canadian dollar prices since we were at par with US dollars a little while back, and I heard of no legal uprising over that - this was something i learned of from the nightly news so the fact it's done is not widely unknown. Also i often find things in the super market not clearly priced all the time. And this i know is officially illegal but no one seems to be suing anyone over that either, there was even governmental action here in Quebec over it some time back which is how it came to my attention, but still it'd done all the time just the same. Drives me nuts frankly but i've heard of no suit in the works and have no interest in engaging in this myself - and that's food, much more a wide spread priority. I think on a subject like this it's good to remember Canada is not quite the quick to litigate state some places are. It's harder to bring a suit, and more expensive from what i've been told than in the US. It may be possible but the question is, will anyone bother? So while it may be true, i don't currently see an active mad rush of comics consumers organizing themselves to sue the assorted comic shop owners collectively for this habit. Seems like a bit of a shot in the dark, we'll see i guess. Perhaps Herve will inspire someone to look into it and make the lives of may retailers more interesting than they already are. The article is marked '001' so we can expect more on the topic. The launch will feature an on-stage discussion of the life and career of the seminal Canadian cartoonist between Seth, the book's co-editor and designer, co-editor and writer Brad Mackay and Chris Oliveros, the book's publisher. As usual, the 2009 DWA jury will be comprised of representatives from a wide swath of Canadian society, from arts and culture to politics and the media. The jury for the 5th annual awards is impressive. They are as follows:Andrew Coyne, the national editor for Maclean's magazine and regular political panellist on CBC Television's The National. Martin Levin, the books editor of The Globe and Mail and a contributor to several anthologies, including What I Meant to Say. Joe Ollmann, a Montreal-based cartoonist and author of This Will All End in Tears, winner of the 2007 Doug Wright Award for Best Book. Bob Rae, the Liberal Party of Canada's foreign affairs critic and the Member of Parliament for Toronto Centre. Rae served as the 21st premier of Ontario from 1990 to 1995. Diana Tamblyn, an Ignatz-nominated Canadian cartoonist and author of several mini-comics, including The Rosie Stories and There You Were. The Doug Wright Awards recognize the finest in Canadian comics in three categories: Best Book, Best Emerging Talent and the Pigskin Peters Award (which acknowledges the best in non-narrative or experimental comics). Over the past five years, The Wright Awards have proudly featured a Who's Who of Canada's fertile comics scene at its podium, including Seth, Bryan Lee O'Malley, Michel Rabigliati, Lorenz Peter, Mariko and Jillian Tamaki, Joe Ollmann, Rebecca Kraatz, Ann Marie Fleming, Jeff Lemire and Julie Morstad. Munn **We have some new competition in the Bestseller List game. This past weekend, I noticed for the first time that the Globe and Mail is posting the occasional top 10 Manga and Graphic Novel List, based on Booknet numbers. The list is similar to the Bookmanager list, but with presumably more numbers backing it up.** The Top 30 Graphic Novels in Canada, courtesy of BookManager. The full list by BookManager is available, with some work, here. The list is compiled by BookManager based on sales through over 400 independent bookstores. Sales through comic shops and larger retailers like Chapters-Indigo are not reflected in this list. For balance, you might want to try the Amazon.ca and Chapters-Indigo lists. This list has two parts, the top 30 overall and (at the bottom) the top 30 by Canadian creators. See here for last week's list. Top 30 Comics and Graphic Novels in Canada 1. The report, "A Statistical Profile of the Arts in Canada", looks at what different kinds of artists earn and how artists fit into the larger Canadian economy. Worth reading. You can see the 4-page summary or read the whole thing, with all its colourful charts and graphs. The basic gist of the report is that artists make very little money and they will soon be making less. I'm not sure how much the 9 categories used (which include writer, visual artist, and craftsperson) have to with people who create comics or one sort or another (cartoonists, comic book artists and writers) or people who may self-identify as illustrators. Journalists are not included in the survey. The report was prepared by Hill Strategies. Besides facts like, 'The arts industry is bigger than the automotive industry' and 'The number of artists in Canada has tripled since 1971' and 'Over half of all artists are women, and they earn less than men', here are a couple highlights: "there are 140,000 artists in Canada who spent more time at their art than at any other occupation in May 2006. Artists include actors, authors, choreographers, craftspeople, composers, conductors, dancers, directors, musicians, producers, singers and visual artists. "At $3.2 billion, the total earnings of artists account for one-half of one percent of total earnings in the overall Canadian labour force (0.5%).
