The C-List: Post X-Mas Let-down

:: Posted by Bryan @ 12/28/2009 12:35:00 AM

Counting down to New Year's:

Item: Cartoonist Robin Konstabaris (Scrambled Brains) was among the victims of a fire in downtown Vancouver that claimed a huge swath of real estate, including an artists studio. Nobody was hurt but it sounds like lots of artwork is gone.

Item: Shahid Mahmood, the Canadian editorial cartoonist who is banned by Air Canada, is going to have his case investigated by the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal.

Item: Happy Cho-lidays! (Or is it Happy Anti-Life?) Michael Cho Xmas card.

Item: Inkstuds' Robin NcConnell conducts his semi-annual "Best Of Year" roundtable with guests Tim Hodler, Sean T. Collins, and Chris Mautner.

Item: Kevin Boyd answers all your questions about 1940s-50s Canadian comics publisher and repackager, Superior Comics.

Item: Jobnik's Miriam Libicki is now teaching comics at Emily Carr: "this course offers practical and wide-ranging techniques for translating your life experiences into sequential art. Classroom writing and drawing exercises, as well as take-home assignments help you develop a creative process from brainstorm to script to layouts and inking. These projects, as well as group and individual critiques, will guide you towards effective storytelling in creating an original graphic memoir.
Based on Libicki's own techniques, as well as strategies from Lynda Barry, Eddie Campbell, Scott McCloud, Jessica Abel and Matt Madden, this intensive yet laid-back course is open to students of all skill and knowledge levels.

Item: Kate Beaton celebrates Xmas: One, Two.

Item: Marian Churchland's Beast graphic novel is profiled on Newsarama.

Item: Jeer Heer discusses homophobia in Floyd Gottfredson's classic Micket Mouse comics strips, as well as in the work of several other canonical cartoonists. Bonus: Heer on blackface in the comics, and early Irish stereotypes.

Harold Bell, 1919-2009

:: Posted by Bryan @ 12/15/2009 02:09:00 AM

Co-Creator of Woodsy Owl

Several news sources reported over the weekend that Harold Bell, the amateur cartoonist and comic strip character marketer who helped create and drew the first image of the environmental mascot Woodsy Owl, has died in Los Angeles.

Born in New Jersey, Bell worked in marketing for Disney and later set up shop on his own, licensing media characters like Dick Tracy and Mr. Magoo. While working on the Lassie tv show in 1970 (Bell has been identified online as both a producer on the show and as somehow associated with Western Publishing, the company that packaged comic books for Dell Publishing in the 1950s and 60s), Bell teamed up with two forest rangers and another co-worker to create a mascot for the first Earth-Day event. The result was Woodsy Owl and the famous slogan, "Give a Hoot, Don't Pollute!"

The character appeared in public service ads, publications and posters for the U.S. Forest Service, as well as on tv. Woodsy also was featured in a comic book series published by Gold Key from 1973 to 1976.

The C-List: Megaman Mania

:: Posted by Bryan @ 12/09/2009 11:43:00 AM

It's finally snowing here in Southern Ontario so I thought I'd dump a big one on you this time. Lots of news about Canadian comics.

Item: Writer Brad Mackay blogs about George Feyer's Stamp Book, a lost classic of Canadian cartooning. Recommended.

Item: Sequential is still collecting your Holiday Wish Lists. Please let us know your suggested comics buys for the holidays.

Item: The latest issue of Marvel Mollusk is now out, illustrated by Nicolas Plamondon. (Not really, but check it out!)

Item: Udon has announced a new series of books based on the popular superhero videogame MegaMan. Chris Butcher follows-up.

Item: Video of cartoonist, scripter and comics teacher Ty Templeton explaining "talent".

Item: Related: A list of winter courses available from the Toronto Cartoonists Workshop is now online.

Item: Two books by Canadians, Michel Rabagliati's Paul a Quebec, and Seth's George Sprott, are among this year's "Essentials" as selected by France's Angouleme Festival.

Item: Speaking of George Sprott, the book was among a select list of comics reviewed by Douglas Wolk for the New York Times on Sunday.

Item: According to the Google homepage, today (yesterday) is E.C. Segar's birthday. Segar's Popeye strip was one of the top 10 strips ever.

Item: Halifax superhero cartooning demigod Darwyn Cooke has illo'd an issue of DC western character Jonah Hex (yes, they still publish it). He talks about his influences and the process of creating the art at his blog. Besides the great John Severin, do I also see a bit of Carlos Ezquerra?

Item: Toronto comics collective and zine Ganglion is coming up to the deadline for its 3rd issue. Potential contributors should submit now!

Item: The Comics Journal's daily newsblog, Journalista, is back online as a (temporary) part of the main TCJ group blog. Journalista editor Dirk Deppey says that the regular Journalista blog, with its own url and "rss feed" (don't ask me), will resume shortly after the Journal reorganization concludes. It's a good thing too, for how else would I have learned about the important Alpha Flight-related news that Northstar, the professional ski-jumper-turned-super-powered-Canadian-secret-agent-turned-token-homosexual will soon have sex after 15 years of abstinence.

Item: Policart Yardley Jones has a gallery show.

Item: Jay Stephen's cartoon show, The Secret Saturday's, has a new comics collection tie-in.

Item: A profile of Haida manga artist Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas.

Item: Montreal art gallery Monastiraki is having an art sale this Friday, December 11. Show items include art by Marc Bell, Rick Trembles, Matt Forsythe, and many others.

Item: Allison Covey presents some photos of the 2009 Shuster Awards and related events. We know it was back in September, but since some of the photos have Sequential contributors in them, they are well worth checking out (see if you can spot Sequential publisher Salgood Sam in the crowd scene of the Shusters afterparty).

Item: D+Q is having a holiday sale.

Indy Comic Book Week: December 30th

:: Posted by Bryan @ 12/08/2009 11:19:00 AM

A few cartoonist acitivists have invented a new even to fill the gap in comic book stores during the last week of December:

Indy Comic Book Week is not only an event, but also a call to action.

Diamond Comic Distributors announced they will not ship any new comics for the last week of December. This company is the primary distributor of comic books in North America. What some would call a sad week without our favorite mainstream titles, we are calling an opportunity. This vacancy allows independent and small press comic book creators to claim this week as their own.

We challenge writers and artists to self publish new material for this week, and offer it to their local stores. We ask for retailers to take this as an opportunity to showcase local independent talent on the new release shelves. We encourage fans to break from their buying habits and try something new.

Raise your fist and proudly declare that comic books are more than an industry, more than a handful of corporations – it is a creative outlet for independent-minded artists and storytellers. This last week of 2009 belongs to you. Power to the people. Right on.

Jack Ruttan at the Montreal Comic Con

:: Posted by max @ 12/07/2009 07:30:00 PM
The Montreal Comic Con had it's December one day event this past Sunday.

Despite plans to attend i missed it, but local writer and cartoonist Jack Ruttan [utopiamoment.ca] was there and has uploaded another impressive set of interviews and photos. We've collected the video into a playlist you wan watch bellow, along with the slide show of photos bellow that. Read Jack's musings about it on his site here.

"Didn't I just do one of these in September? And then there was Expozine last month. So, many of these artist seemed like old friends. It was fun brandishing around my little Lumix DMC-FS3 and talking to artists. Sound was a little off (and some interviews are in French), but I think things are audible if you turn up the volume."

In the playlist appears Convention organizers Oscar and Elizabeth. Eric Theriault, Isabelle Stephen, Michel Lacombe, Sid Vane and Gloria, Patrick Langlois, Troma, Jimmy Suzan, Fred Mahieu, Steph Dumais, Noumier Tawilah, Jipi McCloud, And Janardan.

Well, you take a week off, alot can happen, y'know?

Canadian Content: You have to wade through an awful lot of translated Japanese manga, U.S. superhero fantasies, and collected editions of Sherman's Lagoon to come up with a list of 30 bestselling books created by Canadians. In total, BookManager lists over 4000 graphic novels, trades, and strip collections, the vast majority of which are not by Canadians. On this list, a single sale in a single tiny bookstore can make all the difference. This list does not include books that are only illustrated but not written/created-by Canadians.

This week: The "Seth Signing Tour Effect" lingers and Lynn Johnston begins her annual "Holiday gift-book buying" charge up the charts.
