02.Feb.2012 Canadian Comics Bestseller List: Groundhog Day Edition

compiled/edited by BK Munn
This semi-regular feature of Sequential presents a snapshot of comics sales in Canada.
Fittingly for Groundghog Day, this week’s list closely resembles last week’s. No new publishing “events,” really. A few perennials bumped a few other perennials, that’s all. For instance, an uptick in the sales of a few Tintin books bumped Louis Riel right out of the Top 30 (to #33). Interestingly, the top 25 comics in the country all fall within the top 1000 bestselling books overall (Kate Beaton is #94 and Walking Dead Volume 15 is #993). I don’t know about you, but I’m quite amazed that 25 of the top 1000 books in Canada are graphic novels. Even more amazing? Those 25 books are by only 8 different creators.
(Note: previous week’s rank indicated in (parentheses). N=new and R=returning after an absence from the top 30.)

The list is compiled by BookManager based on sales through over 400 independent bookstores, including several comic book stores and the D+Q store. Sales through most comic shops and larger retailers like Chapters-Indigo are not reflected in this list. BookManager national sales Rankings are updated weekly. For balance, you might want to try the Amazon.ca and Chapters-Indigo lists. See here for our previous Sequential list.

25.Jan.2012 Canadian Comics Bestseller List: Jan 25

compiled/edited by BK Munn
This semi-regular feature of Sequential presents a snapshot of comics sales in Canada.
For our second list of 2012, another radical reorganization. It turns out that Bookmanager classifies both Tintin and the Amulet series primarily as juvenile fiction and not graphic novels so these titles have been missing from previous incarnations of the list. Hardly seems fair that the father of European bande dessinee and the current challenger to the Bone throne should be left off, so here they are added, bumping a ton of stuff (Metamaus, Naruto 53, The Adventures of Herge). Maybe it’s time to separate the children’s and adult categories?
(Note: previous week’s rank indicated in (parentheses). N is new and R means returning after an absence from the top 30.)

You have to wade through an awful lot of translated Japanese manga, U.S. superhero fantasies, and collected editions of Sherman’s Lagoon to come up with a list of 30 bestselling books created by Canadians. In total, BookManager lists over 4000 graphic novels, trades, and strip collections, the vast majority of which are not by Canadians. On this list, a single sale in a single tiny bookstore can make all the difference. This list does not include books that are only illustrated but not written/created-by Canadians.

Wow, that’s a big jump for 500 Years of Resistance. A regular on this list since its publication last year.
From the publisher:
The 500 Years of Resistance Comic Book is a powerful and historically accurate graphic portrayal of Indigenous resistance to the European colonization of the Americas, beginning with the Spanish invasion under Christopher Columbus and ending with the Six Nations land reclamation in Ontario in 2006. Gord Hill spent two years unearthing images and researching historical information to create The 500 Years of Resistance Comic Book, which presents the story of Aboriginal resistance in a far-reaching format.
Other events depicted include the 1680 Pueblo Revolt in New Mexico; the Inca insurgency in Peru from the 1500s to the 1780s; Pontiac and the 1763 Rebellion & Royal Proclamation; Geronimo and the 1860s Seminole Wars; Crazy Horse and the 1877 War on the Plains; the rise of the American Indian Movement in the 1960s; 1973’s Wounded Knee; the Mohawk Oka Crisis in Quebec in 1990; and the 1995 Aazhoodena/Stoney Point resistance.
With strong, plain language and evocative illustrations, The 500 Years of Resistance Comic Book documents the fighting spirit and ongoing resistance of Indigenous peoples through 500 years of genocide, massacres, torture, rape, displacement, and assimilation: a necessary antidote to the conventional history of the Americas.
The book includes an introduction by Ward Churchill, a writer, political activist, and co-director of the American Indian Movement of Colorado.

Bryan Lee O’Malley continues on as the Jeff Smith of Canada, dominating the Canadian list with 8 spots.
This week’s spotlight book is Killing Velasquez by Phillipe Girard, published by Conundrum Press and translated from the French by KerryAnn Cochrane. We last enjoyed Girard in his 2010 release Ruts and Gullies, an autobiographical carnet de voyage which chronicled his visit to a Russian comics festival alongside fellow cartoonist and erstwhile publisher Jimmy Beaulieu. Killing Velasquez returns Girard and his effective, bold linework and deadpan delivery to the world of fiction and the highly topical subject of sexual abuse by Catholic priests.
From the publisher:
“On hearing a radio report of an accused priest Philippe is thrown back to a difficult time in his youth. He is faced with his parents’ impending divorce, moves to a new city, goes to a new school, and needs to make new friends. To help him adapt to his new surroundings his mother urges him to join the “Snow Geese,” a youth group led by a nonconformist priest who challenges Philippe to rethink his values. But as Philippe becomes more acquainted with the group and its charismatic leader, masks begin to slip, and he finds himself plunged into the centre of an unexpected drama. With his life turned upside-down, he seeks comfort in reading, and manages to find his bearings again when he discovers the old-fashioned adventure series of Jack Bowmore. Killing Velazquez is an autobiographical tale that gives us a glimpse into the complexities of manipulation and reminds us that sometimes an old book can actually save a life.”

Chester Brown’s Paying For It debuts at the number one spot on the Canadian List and the number 3 spot overall after a ton of positive press and a running start due to a national tour and several big conventions including TCAF. While there have been a few negative reviews that focus on the moral/political nature of being a john and perhaps profiting from the experience, most have been like the latest, in the New York Times, or this interview in Mother Jones, generally laudatory bookchat with a few jabs at the author’s emotion-less presentation. Still, it looks to be selling okay.

Launched in January in Canada, Mahendra Singh’s Hunting of the Snark makes its first appearance on the Sequential Bestseller List this week.
From the publisher: Adventures in Wonderland is perhaps Lewis Carroll’s most famous literary work. It has been adapted countless times in countless ways, from the recent film by Tim Burton starring Johnny Depp, to the famous Disney cartoon, Alice in Wonderland, from 1951. While Alice certainly deserves the attention, she has overshadowed some of Carroll’s other classic works.
Now, The Hunting of the Snark, one of Carroll’s most beloved and linguistically playful poems, comes to life in this wickedly inventive new edition. Perfectly suited to the modern form of the graphic novel, Singh’s illustrated adaptation compliments the timelessness of this classic poem with an edge that incorporates movements in art from Carroll’s time to the present. The Snark may never be found, but the hunt for him has never been more arresting.

Published in March by Tangles publisher Freehand Books (Broadview Publishing), Bitter Medicine is one of the wave of post-Chester Brown explorations of mental illness memoirs. You can read a review here. The book has already been shortlisted for the Wilfred Eggleston Award for Nonfiction as a part of the 2011 Alberta Literary Awards.
From the publisher:
“In 1976, Ben Martini was diagnosed with schizophrenia. A decade later, his brother Olivier was told he had the same disease. For the past thirty years the Martini family has struggled to comprehend and cope with a devastating illness, frustrated by a health care system lacking in resources and empathy, the imperfect science of medication, and the strain of mental illness on familial relationships.
Throughout it all, Olivier, an accomplished visual artist, drew. His sketches, comic strips, and portraits document his experience with, and capture the essence of, this all too frequently misunderstood disease. In Bitter Medicine, Olivier’s poignant graphic narrative runs alongside and communicates with a written account of the past three decades by his younger brother, award-winning author and playwright Clem Martini. The result is a layered family memoir that faces head-on the stigma attached to mental illness.
Shot through with wry humour and unapologetic in its politics, Bitter Medicine is the story of the Martini family, a polemical and poetic portrait of illness, and a vital and timely call for action.”

I think this is a new edition of Julie Doucet’s seminal autobio comic My New York Diary (at least the Bookmanager info says March 15, 2011). Doucet had one of 2010′s weirder releases with a Michael Gondry-directed movie called My NEW New York Diary, for which she drew a new documentary/introductory comic strip diary of the filming of a movie loosely based on her original graphic novel. Very meta. The whole thing was published by Picturebox and it was nice to have new Doucet comics, however slight, and getting to see Doucet experiencing the “movie star” treatment (ie, staying in Gondry’s tiny apartment where she had to buy her own groceries) was hilarious.

This week’s list should be subtitled “The Great Bone Correction, Part 2.” Last year I made the discovery that every Bone book by Jeff Smith was not showing up in Bookmanager’s rankings of comics and graphic novels –quite an oversight since many of those books rank quite highly. I corrected for this, with the result that a huge number of Jeff Smith’s have dominated the overall top 30 for the last few months. The recently-published Bone: Quest for the Spark has been at or near the number one spot on this list for awhile now but a comment last week hipped me to the fact that this is not actually a comic but an illustrated prose novel. So this week I’ve turfed it. Please imagine that Essex County was the number one book for the last 2 months on this list.

04.Mar.2011 Canadian Comics Bestseller List: March 4
compiled/edited by BK Munn
This semi-regular feature of Sequential presents a snapshot of comics sales in Canada.
Part 1 .
Intro: The bestselling graphic novels and comics collections in Canada, courtesy of BookManager. The full list by BookManager is available, with some work, here. The list is compiled by BookManager based on sales through over 400 independent bookstores, including several comic book stores and the D+Q store. Sales through most comic shops and larger retailers like Chapters-Indigo are not reflected in this list. For balance, you might want to try the Amazon.ca and Chapters-Indigo lists. (As this list is being compiled, the Scott Pilgrim boxed set and Essex County are #2 and #12 on the Amazon.ca comics list.) See here for our previous Sequential list from last week.

Some old faces return to the list from their positions hovering just outside of the top 30. To give an indication of how far down it is necessary to go to compile this list, The Hipless Boy is ranked 14,487 on Bookmanager’s overall list (only about #250 in the comics list, just between Asterix and the Black Gold and the fourth volume of Andy Runton’s Owly series). It has been off and on the top 30 list essentially since its publication in June 2009, not bad for the debut graphic novel by a young artist, published by a small Montreal press.
