first Ottawa Comics Jam of 2013
Why spend a cold winter night drawing alone when you can draw comics in a warm, cozy atmosphere with other artists? Barring a blizzard, the first jam of the year will celebrate SNOW (and the eventual melting of it all…)
Come and experience a comic-making technique called ‘Melting Snow Ball’ where each new panel has one object/character removed from it than the previous panel (applies to text as well.) Thanks to Gérard Bélec for suggesting the new technique!

30.Jul.2012 Roving Reporter: Photos from The Dragon Eisner Party
by BK Munn
Last Friday I took a break from Sequential’s Summer Posting schedule, climbed out of my hammock, and ambled downtown to report on the festivities at The Dragon Eisner Party. After all, it’s not everyday my local comic shop wins a big international award, and I would be in dereliction of my journalistic duties if I did not attend. Plus, I heard a rumour that cold beers would be sold on the premises.
Taking place at the Pennywhistle Pub to celebrate the win of the Wil Eisner Spirit of Retailing award, the event was well-attended, with over 50 staff and customers on hand for cake, beverages, comic book raffles, and a charming thank-you talk by Dragon owner Jenn Haines, accompanied by a blooper reel from the video used as the store’s pitch to the Eisner jury. I have to say, this cynical old reporter was refreshingly taken aback by the honest excitement on exhibit. Jenn and Rob Haines seemed genuinely grateful and appreciative of the honour, and positively giddy over the experience, a far cry from the blaise attitude expressed my many fans and even creators towards the Eisners, especially considering alot of the blogging I’ve read this year on the subject of comic award shows. In talking to me about their whirlwind experience of the San Diego con and the awards night, Rob Haines seemed honestly stoked about everything, from the wins by other Canadians, to starstruck interactions with other attendees like Gilbert Hernadez.

Kevin Boyd and Debra Jane Shelly. Kevin is the very busy owner of The Comic Book Lounge in Toronto as well as being the man behind the Shuster Awards and comics programmer for Fan Expo.

There was cake! At one point later in the night, feeling temporarily alone and sorry for myself, I sat down at the empty table and ate some leftover icing, scraping it off the tinfoil and looking around guiltily.

Rob and Jenn Haines with manager Amy Chop. The miracle of the loaves and fishes reenacted: everyone got cake.

The Vancouver Comic Jam has not got a event page up yet but they hold theirs on the second last Saturday of the month ussually, or close to that. At The Wallflower diner. So i’d expect them to have it next weekend, on The 21st probably. Ask them on their group wall for details.
The Montreal Comic Jam hasn’t got an event page up yet either but it’s held the last Tuesday of the month, putting it on the 31st this month. Held at L’Escalier unless posted otherwise. 27.May.2012 Jammin’ across the nation
Comic jams this month,
there will be doodling.
The Toronto Comic Jam is being held Tuesday May 29th, they are calling it the “I won’t be there edition“. Huh, interesting strategy.
The Montreal Comic Jam falls on the same night, Tuesday May 29th. They are right in the midst of one of the common staging grounds for protesting the 100+ days so don’t be surprised if you find yourself in the midst of the action. Might make for an exciting night.
The Monthly Prince Edward County Comix Jam is marking their 7th year on the 30th, Wednesday night, with The Great Edible Comix Jam Birthday Party.
And the Ottawa Comic Jam marks it’s 3rd Anniversary! Also on the 30th, Wednesday night. “Regular jamming will occur in a festive atmosphere. There will be prizes, treats, freebies and more! Feel free to bring potluck desserts if you like, or just your friends and comic-making material. It should be a great night of creativity and celebration.”
The Vancouver Comic Jam was last night, Missed it!
17.Apr.2012 Comic Jams!

The alternate Montreal jam, the ATOMIC COMIC JAM had it’s last jam Friday, April 6! Missed it! They tend to hold them early in the month.

The Ottawa Jam’s Suzanne Marsden made this great general use poster.
Check out her daily journal comic too!
The Toronto Comic Jam can be tracked via this page. Dalton Sharp routinely post’s notices of other engaging things to check out in Toronto there as well.
Somewhere in there i stumbled on a link to Troy Little’s Angora Napkin. Oh my goodness it’s looking rather good. Go read now.
With the end of the Xeric‘ this summer, I feel bad to have been slack in posting notices of fundraisers. Totally missed the boat on posting about Madeline Richards’ indiegogo fundraiser for her new book Grace. Sorry about that. Good thing about that site is you do get to use what you raise, it’s not all or nothing as i recall.
Going by the notes and this post on her blog it seems a run was printed! I expect this will be one of the books making the seen at ExpoZine.
And Troy had an indiegogo champaign his project here.

And the next day in Ottawa…
Ottawa Comic Jam
7:00pm, Wednesday, Sept 28
@ Shanghai Restaurant, 651 Somerset St. W.
Last September, the Ottawa Comic Jam group tried an experiment. Suggested by Gérard Bélec, the Jammers told their stories BACKWARDS. The jam was an amazing success! Let’s repeat that success this September and tell more stories backwards (1st panel drawn is the last in the story, followed by panels that describe how the characters got there. The last panel drawn on the page is literally the ‘first’ panel of the story).
Sounds complicated? You’ll get it fast. Come out, challenge yourself and have a lot of fun!
To see examples of last year’s ‘Backwards’ comic scans, please head on over to the jam site.
25.Jul.2011 Comix jams this week today tomorrow and the day after, and the week after…

At the Cameron House. “Be there or be square!”
Ottawa’s June “Snowball” Comic Jam. Wednesday June 29th, 2011. 7 pm – 10 pm.
@ Shanghai Restaurant, 651 Somerset St. W. What better way to cool off in the summer than a no-holds-barred snowball fight? Or at least that is the theory! Come out to the June Jam to experience a comic-making technique called ‘Snowball’ where each new panel has one more object/character added to it than the previous panel – and can apply to text as well. Thanks to Gérard for suggesting the new technique!
The next Vancouver Comic Jam is July 16th, 2011.
