New Quebec Anthology: Front Froid
:: Posted by Bryan @ 4/15/2008 04:01:00 PM An organization that has been on the scene for the past three years is launching an imprint devoted to Quebec bande dessinee. Front Froid (Cold Front) will publish its first title, an anthology called Le Front, later this month.
Front Froid was established by Gautier Langevin and Olivier Carpentier as a non-profit to promote comics in Quebec.
According to a press release, Le Front is an annual anthology edited by Gautier Langevin. The premier issue features six artists: Michel Falardeau, Martin Roy, Olivier Carpentier, Jeik Dion, Fred Jourdain, and Felix Laflamme. Also according to the release, editor Langevin has some harsh words for the state of comics in Quebec, asserting that, "despite the phenomenal amount of talent emerging in bd in Quebec, the resources that would enable them to practise their art decently are largely insufficient." He indicates that part of the development of the artform involves proper renumeration for the young cartoonists involved, although there is no official mention of page rates (said to be $100 per page in this interview), royalties, or contracts in the release.
The book launches Thursday, April 17 at Galerie Ninkasi, Quebec City, as part of the annual Festival de la BD Francophone de Quebec.Labels: anthologies, bd, graphic novels, Quebec

WHEN JOURNALISM AND COMICS COLLIDE | EXTRACTION! : Comix Reportage
:: Posted by max @ 10/09/2007 08:07:00 PM Co: David Widgington, Cumulus Press.
Kicking off the Expozine launch season, Cumulus Press presents EXTRACTION! A new Journalistic graphic novel about the dirty business of global resource extraction in the 21st century.
Edited by Frederic Dubois, Marc Tessier & David Widgington. Featuring comix art by Joe Ollmann, Phil Angers, Ruth Tait & Stanley Wany. Reportage by Dawn Paley, Petr Cizek, Sophie Toupin & Tamara Herman. And additional illustration by Alain Reno, Jeff Lemire & Carlos Santos.
Since 2000, most energy and mineral prices have been skyrocketing. Junior mining prospectors and unscrupulous transnational corporations rush into new territories to suck what's hot out of the earth's lucrative veins. In today's gas, oil and mining industries, the pace of exploration, extraction, transformation and delivery of the world's resources is mind boggling. The German magazine Der Spiegel speaks of a Third World War for the world's resources. It is more like a blitzkrieg.
EXTRACTION! looks into the exploration, exploitation and extraction of oil, uranium, bauxite and gold, from a common-good social justice perfective.

Monster Island 3
:: Posted by Bryan @ 8/03/2007 12:03:00 AM Billy Mavreas has announced the debut of Monster Island III, an anthology of comics from Conundrum Press:
This book straddles the line between comic anthology and art book but also contains essays to give historical context to the art. Rick Trembles provides a tribute in comic form to movie director Ray Harryhausen. Mavreas contributes a feature on Inuit artist Alootook Ipellie. There is Joe Ollmann's comic on the history of his drawing implements and Andy Brown's essay on the significance of the publishing history of one of Jack Kirby's final comic series. Bernie Mireault provides a comic about a horrific poker game while Patrick R. Burger writes about German pulps from the 1930s which were set in Africa. Of course the book also includes many monster drawings including those by Fiona Smyth. Other contributors include: John Mavreas, Carlos Santos, Jesse Bochner, Tessa Fenger, Jennifer MacIntyre, Shawn Jefferies, Guy Boutin, Helene Brosseau, Leyla Majeri, Rupert Bottenberg, Howard Chackowicz, Sean McCarthy, and Shawn Cheng.
