New Quebec Anthology: Front Froid
:: Posted by Bryan @ 4/15/2008 04:01:00 PM An organization that has been on the scene for the past three years is launching an imprint devoted to Quebec bande dessinee. Front Froid (Cold Front) will publish its first title, an anthology called Le Front, later this month.
Front Froid was established by Gautier Langevin and Olivier Carpentier as a non-profit to promote comics in Quebec.
According to a press release, Le Front is an annual anthology edited by Gautier Langevin. The premier issue features six artists: Michel Falardeau, Martin Roy, Olivier Carpentier, Jeik Dion, Fred Jourdain, and Felix Laflamme. Also according to the release, editor Langevin has some harsh words for the state of comics in Quebec, asserting that, "despite the phenomenal amount of talent emerging in bd in Quebec, the resources that would enable them to practise their art decently are largely insufficient." He indicates that part of the development of the artform involves proper renumeration for the young cartoonists involved, although there is no official mention of page rates (said to be $100 per page in this interview), royalties, or contracts in the release.
The book launches Thursday, April 17 at Galerie Ninkasi, Quebec City, as part of the annual Festival de la BD Francophone de Quebec.Labels: anthologies, bd, graphic novels

This new book covers the history of comics in the province of Quebec from its earliest history to 2007. Felardeau has written a lot on this subject and this sounds like, at the very least, a very thorough overview. A translated review is here.Labels: bd, comics history, publishing

Quebec Comics 2007
:: Posted by Bryan @ 2/13/2008 12:01:00 AM BDQ 2006

Comics journalist and scholar Michel Viau has released his annual assessment of comics production in Quebec. Viau's Bilan BDQ 2007 (Google translation) is a summary of all comics production in Quebec, including both English and French books. The major conclusion of the report is that overall comics production, measured in books published, was down when compared to the 2006 numbers, although the trend of the last three years is one of gradual growth in the number of published titles.
Viau lists every album published (excluding zines and magazines) and includes a general discussion about genre, target audience, trends, etc. with tons of statistics.
My own rough translation of the first part of Viau's excellent overview:
In 2007, 22 Quebec publishers have issued 67 Comic books, French and English, representing a fairly marked decline compared to the year 2006, but still an increase compared to the production of the year 2005.
It must be noted that 2006 was exceptional, with the release of 86 titles, or 28% more than in 2007. However, the production of 2005, with 44 albums released, was 34% lower than that of this year. For example, if we except 2006 and its phenomenal production, the year 2007 is part of a continued 8 year increase in comics production.
Some publishers that emerged last year have been quiet this year: Fichtre! published only an autobiographical essay by Marc Tessier, while Arion (which seems to have completely ceased its activities) and Du Quebecois have no forthcoming albums scheduled. After an absence of several years, Michel D'Amours returned to comics publishing comics with a new house, Valour, which is unfortunately not very well distributed. As well, Line Arsenault continues her self-publishing.
Children's publishers (Boomerang, Quebec Amerique, Lauzier, Bayard, FouLire, Le Raton laveur and Les Intouchables) still have a finger in the BD pie. However, none of these has published a collection exclusively devoted to comics. Published albums are therefore AWOL from their catalogues.
Again this year, the bulk of production is divided between four publishers. Drawn & Quarterly, La Pasteque, mecanique generale et Presses aventure, on their own, have published 42 books, more than 62% of annual production. Of other publishers moderately active in 2007, we note Conundrum Press (5 titles) and L'Oie de Cravan (3 titles).
In 2007, 70% of comics albums published in Quebec were in French, a decline compared to previous years (75.5% in 2006 and 77% in 2005). Whereas in 2000, 83% of the albums were published in French. Although, it must be said that both Montreal Anglophone publishers, Drawn & Quarterly and Conundrum Press, have been particularly active this year with 28% of the production together. Several Francophone authors (Guy Delisle, Julie Doucet, Richard Suicide, Pascal Blanchet, and Line Gamache) have seen their works translated into English by these publishers.

The literary picture show on mcgilldaily.com
:: Posted by max @ 1/29/2008 10:35:00 AM Local illustrator Pascal Blanchet recounts the rise and fall of an idyllic Quebec small town in his newest book, White Rapids
By Alex Weisler Culture Writer
Like Persepolis and Maus, White Rapids is a testament to the rising mass appeal of the graphic novel.
"Graphic novels have been garnering increasingly mainstream attention and critical respect in recent years, with "slice of life" stories overshadowing the capes and tights familiar to the medium. The genre's literary merits have come to light with a slew of popular new works: Persepolis, recently adapted into a feature film; the Pulitzer Prize-winning Maus; as well as more subversive books like Alan Moore's Lost Girls, an erotic take on Victorian children's fiction." -->>
Pascal Blanchet's White Rapids is published by Drawn & Quarterly. It's available for purchase at the publisher's store (211 Bernard O.) for $27.95 or on their web site at drawnandquarterly.com.Labels: bd, new books, preview, publishing, Quebec

Midweek Links: Giant Montreal Bookfest
:: Posted by Bryan @ 11/14/2007 02:14:00 PM 1. What happens when Jeet Heer goes more in-depth into the David Michaelis bio of Charles Schulz than the Globe and Mail will allow? He posts the result on his blog.
2. The Onion's A.V. Club profiles Bryan Lee O'Malley and the latest volume of Scott Pilgrim: "O'Malley has raised the bar, art-wise: His deceptively basic style is suddenly deeper, richer, and more mature, while his eye for dynamics and graphic economy has gotten even keener." How much better can he get?
3. The winner of the second annual Concours quebecois de bande dessinee, a contest sponsored by Montreal's Monet bookstore to discover and publish new comics talent in album format, has just been published. Memoires d'un Metys, by Jessica Samson-Tshimbalanga, is a 72-page graphic novel about vampires in New France, and is published by Monet. Samson-Tshimbalanga will be appearing this weekend at the giant Salon du livre de Montreal. In addition, Monet has announced the next contest: beginning today and ending January 31, 2008, Monet will be accepting entries for the 3rd annual Concours. You must be a 1st-time creator (no previous books published) and over 16 years. You must submit a complete synopsis and 10 % of completed pages by the end date. The winner gets a published book and $1000 Canadian. (link via BDQ)
5. Which brings us to the big event, the Salon du livre de Montreal. This massive book festival has a large comics and bd contingent, including representatives of Quebec and European comics publishers (not to mention Archie comics) and features many signings, panels, and book launches. This is the 30th year of the Salon and its location in the biggest city in Quebec guarantees lots of media coverage. Michel Viau at BDQ has the agenda for today, as well as a large list of artist appearances and events. Michel Rabagliati and Pascal Blanchet are two of the many names that stand out. Among other publishing news, cartoonist Leif Tande is releasing two new albums through La Pasteque this weekend: Le Canard et le loup and Danger public. I'm sure there will be several reports from these events over the days to come...Labels: bd, blogosphere, events, graphic novels, Montreal, profiles, publishing, reviews, slm

WHEN JOURNALISM AND COMICS COLLIDE | EXTRACTION! : Comix Reportage
:: Posted by max @ 10/09/2007 08:07:00 PM Co: David Widgington, Cumulus Press.
Kicking off the Expozine launch season, Cumulus Press presents EXTRACTION! A new Journalistic graphic novel about the dirty business of global resource extraction in the 21st century.
Edited by Frederic Dubois, Marc Tessier & David Widgington. Featuring comix art by Joe Ollmann, Phil Angers, Ruth Tait & Stanley Wany. Reportage by Dawn Paley, Petr Cizek, Sophie Toupin & Tamara Herman. And additional illustration by Alain Reno, Jeff Lemire & Carlos Santos.
Since 2000, most energy and mineral prices have been skyrocketing. Junior mining prospectors and unscrupulous transnational corporations rush into new territories to suck what's hot out of the earth's lucrative veins. In today's gas, oil and mining industries, the pace of exploration, extraction, transformation and delivery of the world's resources is mind boggling. The German magazine Der Spiegel speaks of a Third World War for the world's resources. It is more like a blitzkrieg.
EXTRACTION! looks into the exploration, exploitation and extraction of oil, uranium, bauxite and gold, from a common-good social justice perfective.

D&Q to Translate Pascal Blanchet
:: Posted by Bryan @ 6/20/2007 12:04:00 AM from the D&Q September Solicitations at Chris Butcher's blog:
White Rapids Trade paperback/ 156 pages/ 2 colors/ 7 x 8.75 inches. $19.95 978-1-897299-24-1 Pascal Blanchet
Winner of the Best Book prize for the Quebec comic industry awards, Pascal Blanchet's graphic novel is a compelling account of the rise and fall of the small northern town of White Rapids. In the first English translation of his work, Blanchet seamlessly blends fact and fiction as he weaves together the official history of the town and snapshots of the quotidian life of its residents. Founded in 1928 in an isolated region of Quebec forest, the town was conceived and constructed by the Shawinigan Water & Power Company to function as a fully-equipped, self-contained living community for workers at the nearby dam and their families. Intended as an incentive to lure workers to the remote and inaccessible region, White Rapids provided its residents with all the luxuries of middle-class modern life in a pastoral setting—until the town was abruptly shut down in 1971, when the company changed hands. Blanchet's unique, streamlined, retro-inspired aesthetic draws on Art Deco and fifties Modernist design to vividly conjure up idyllic scenes of lazy summer days and crisp winter nights in White Rapids, transporting the reader back to a more innocent time.

Comics Seized by Canada Customs
:: Posted by Bryan @ 6/08/2007 01:06:00 AM Toronto gay weekly Xtra has the breaking news about a seizure of comics by Canada Customs. The comics, all translated queer comics from French publisher H&O Comics, were destined for Priape, a Montreal book shop.
The seized titles are Dads & Boys vol. 1 & 2 , Justin vol 1 & 2 (both by English artist Josman), and the manga Arena and Gunji by Gengoroh Tagame. The Josman books contain depictions of incest and seem to be the focus of the seizure.
Tagame, at least, has been banned in Canada before. Here is a site with links to the CANADA BORDER SERVICES AGENCY's lists of banned books in Canada. The lists are somewhat secretive, but are updated quarterly and are available via email request: piu-uip@cbsa-asfc.gc.ca.
H&O is a small publisher and will not be disputing the seizure. Ditto Priape owner Bernard Rousseau, who claims in the Xtra article to have been unaware of the exact contents of the books when he ordered them for his store.
The seizure, which took place earlier this Spring, is the first major event of its kind that has been reported this year and the first since the Supreme Court denied Little Sister's appeal for funding to pursue is suit against the Canadian Border Services Agency in January. The seizure is another example of the disconnect between the actions of the CBSA and other Canadian agencies, and it's targetting of material directed at a gay and lesbian audience.
Little Sister's Jim Diva is quoted in the Xtra article:
There is another reason Rousseau says he didn't protest the seizure. "We didn't protest because it was mostly about younger boys and incest," he says. "We have protested before, but we decided that after looking into the matter it is too much."
"They were determined to be obscene," says CBSA spokesperson Chris Williams. "The indicators ranged from depictions of incest to sex with pain and sexual mutilation, defecation and vomiting."
While Xtra has so far been unable to examine all the seized material, the Justin books are available on-line in English at the artist's website.
"Does that mean that only certain people who are Internet savvy can access pornography?" asks Jim Deva, co-owner of Vancouver's Little Sister's Bookstore. "That it's available on-line raises the question of how are we protecting Canadians from it."
The on-line versions of the Justin books tell the story of a gay man who is reunited with his 18-year-old son, Justin, after several years. Justin moves in with his father and soon confesses his sexual attraction to him. In the two books, the two are depicted having oral and anal sex and, in one scene, Justin's father urinates on him.
Priape purchaser Denis Leblanc says he didn't know the storylines of the books when the store ordered them.
"I knew it wasn't a church book. I knew it was erotic stories and that it was comics, but I didn't know specifically what it was about," says Leblanc.
Tourtois maintains that as adult fantasy comics, obscenity is H&O's raison d'etre, and that they are not harmful and no actors are harmed or exploited in their production. He also says that no other country has stopped shipment of the books. Labels: bd, censorship, international, links

:: Posted by Bryan @ 6/07/2007 01:27:00 AM
Tonight 46 comics artists will gather to paint a giant fresco in Montreal. The event is part of Nuit Blanche, a city-wide art festival. The fresco is being called "Pas de colporteur" ("No streetvendors"??? "No salesmen"??? "No pedlars"???) and will take up a 600 metre long space along Mont-Royal Ave between St-Hubert et De Lanaudiere (I think).
The event takes place between 10 pm and 2 am, tonight, Thursday June 7.Labels: bd, events
