Tonite: Back + Forth Booklaunch, Toronto

:: Posted by Bryan @ 9/15/2009 11:10:00 AM

Marta Chudolinska Interview

Marta Chudolinska is the artist behind the new linocut novel, Back + Forth, which launches tonight at Toronto's McNally Robinson Bookstore, 1090 Don Mills Road at Lawrence, 7PM to 8PM. The book is published by Porcupine's Quill and is part of their new graphic novel line.

A recent grad of the Ontario College of Art and Design, and a student of woodcut artist George Walker, Marta was kind enough to answer a few questions for Sequential:

Can you talk a bit about your OCAD experience, being taught by George Walker, his influence, and genesis of the book?

Working and studying with George has always been an extreme pleasure. From the first lecture of the first class, I knew that he was special. Not many profs put sound effects into their presentations! That small example expresses a lot about George. He has an energy for art and books and life that is absolutely infectious. There are people who believe in life and are able to manifest their dreams and desires. George Walker is one of those people and he leads by example. He is also an extremely generous teacher. He gives so much of his time and care to his students. I think a lot of OCAD print students have benefited from his warmth.
In that first class, which looked at the book as an art object, I created a wordless book of linocuts with 16 prints (In a way, Back + Forth picks up where this book left off). In my last year at OCAD, I asked George to be my advisor for an independent study course where we would determine the parameters of the course. I was very interesting in creating a graphic novel, but I imagined a more conventional style and format: a hand-inked comic featuring words.
It was at this point that George introduced me to the idea of working with Tim Inkster of the Porcupine's Quill, who had just started to publish a series of wordless novels created in the tradition of 19th century printmaking. I made the novel over a period of eight months, starting slow and doing most of the work in the last two harrowing months. I would have occasional meetings with George to check in and get feedback on the story's development. The course itself was only a half credit but after preparing, cutting and printing 90 linocuts, it ended up being more work than the rest of my entire senior year! Work well worth doing, of course.

Can you extrapolate on how the experience of moving between two cities suggested time travel to you and how this in turn became a theme in your book?

Traveling has been a very important act in my life and the journeys I've taken have really shaped me as a person. When I moved to Vancouver in my first year of university, it was as if I had created a brand new life for myself. This new life had no connection to my life back home and I was free to create it, and the image of myself, as I pleased. While at first, this left me feeling exhilarated and liberated, it eventually wore me out. Trying to synthesize in my mind these two identities I had created left me feeling a bit crazy, to be honest!
The stories from Back + Forth are loosely based on two periods of my life that were particularly important to my development. There was something that intrigued me about interweaving these two times together, in order to create a contrast and to use these (painful) experiences to learn something about myself. Though I was constantly diligent on how certain images may be interpreted, I made this book primarily for myself, as a way to understand.
As my close friends may know, I am absolutely obsessed with the idea of time travel and time itself. Maybe I've had too much postmodern education, but it makes no sense to me to see time as a linear path. While things may seem to happen in a particular order, the way we experience or organize our memories about our past is closer to chaos.

There's a link to a Frans Masereel site on your blog. Do you think that there is something about our current time that makes the creation of wordless picture novels particularly apt? Why this format? What's its appeal to you?

While doing research for this project, I went to the Toronto Reference Library, which has an incredible art room where you can request to view items from their rare book collection. There I was able to handle and read beautiful old copies of wordless novels produced in the early 20th century, mostly by Frans Masereel and Lynd Ward. These books really spoke to me as a lover of visual narratives. Not depending on words, Masereel especially was able to produce characters and images that none the less screamed with meaning. He was tapping into a way of expressing emotion that is beyond language, something that does not need to be translated. There is a primal appeal to it. It also forces the reader to work harder to understand and to use their imagination to smooth out the parts that don't make sense. Words tend to pin things down more precisely. Not using them frees up the interpretation of the story, allowing readers to incorporate their own experiences.
I have always loved comics in their every shape and form, from my brother's X-Men to the sexist tales of Archie and friends, to instructional comics in my school textbooks. I have read just about every graphic novel at my local library, on just about any subject, in just about any style. I have such a hunger for this stuff, and I've been really happy to see in recent years that the market and demand for graphic novels has ballooned and there is more out there for me to savour. I think as we become more sophisticated at reading images, we can handle more complex and non-traditional presentations of narrative.

Comics and Graphic Novels @ The Word On The Street

:: Posted by max @ 8/21/2009 09:49:00 PM

We're proud at Sequential, to be participating in some small way to this years events in Toronto! At the invitation of TCAF, we're co-sponsoring two panels on the program...
Link- The Toronto Comic Arts Festival is proud to once-again be partnering with Canada's national book festival, The Word On The Street, to provide a full day of programming for fans and practitioners of comics and graphic novels. Designed to provide material for the comics neophyte AND the comics hardcore, the comics and graphic novel tent will feature something for everyone!

The Beguiling will once-again be exhibiting at WOTS, and a number of other graphic novel creators will be set up around the Festival and at The Beguiling, Drawn & Quarterly, and Comics & Graphic Novels tents. Look for more details closer to the date!

I've got a bit more reading up to do myself to bone up for this. Also wanted to post my own reading list soon and make sure I've read all the panelists work myself!

There's a really full list of events centered around this blog's favorite bound media, the full WOTS event schedule is on the site here. But Chris from The Bugiling has fuller descriptions posted for the comic's events here, if i may highlight two of them in particular....
3:00 - 4:00 :: Sequential Presents: Oh, Canada. Surveying the Landscape of Canadian Comics
What does it mean to be a Canadian graphic novelist?
What is the state of Canadian comics & graphic novels,
and what is its future?
Just what makes a comic Canadian anyway?*
Join Bryan Munn and Salgood Sam, editors of Sequential, the Canadian comics, news and culture blog as they discusses the state of Canadian comics. Joining them will be representatives of Canada's dual national cartooning awards, Brad Mackay and Jeet Heer from The Doug Wright Awards and Kevin Boyd from The Joe Shuster Awards, as well as a few as yet unnamed award-winning Canadian comics creators.
Sure to be a lively discussion!
*{ed: probably taking the middle two Q: more seriously as topics - lots there to discuss - and have a laugh at the other two topic's expense, yeah?}

4:00 - 5:00 :: Sequential Presents: Three New Comics Set in Canada
Following the discussion of the state of Canadian graphic novels, Sequential - who thinks repeating full tittles get's a bit winded :) - will be presenting readings featuring three new graphic novels set in Canada! New books, woot!
One story is published on the Internet, one published by an American publisher and even one published in Canada! Uh...yeah...psst, what's that mean exactly guys? Anyways i do know these folks and we're talking about some great work. Top drawer panelologists, paneling about their panels, they is! I've been watching too much Mighty Boosh this summer....
Willow Dawson, 100 Mile House; Jeff Lemire, Essex County; and Evan Munday, Quarter-Life Crisis. All three will be giving readings of their work and if there's time talk a bit about it. Should be a nice round.
That's really just a small part of what's planed for the day, there are 8 presentations for the whole. Here's hoping i don't play the total burk. :) Bryan and I will be moderating these two. I'll attempt to record them as well for posting here the same day if i can.

For the other WOTS events it seems not as much had been planed specifically for Comics, The Halifax WOTS Graphic Novel listing's are not up yet but they say
"We promise to entertain adults and youth alike with panel discussions by graphic novelists. Aimed primarily at 12 years and older."
So that sounds promising. I'll check up with some folks i know there and see what's happening.

In BC the Vancover fest will be holding the comix portion of the events undergrount, at The Word Under The Street. "Local alternative comic book artists and 'zines. Including exhibitors, events, readings, and presentations. Inside the Library, Alice McKay Room downstairs"

Launch for Pascal Blanchet's new book: Baloney!

:: Posted by max @ 3/03/2009 11:22:00 PM
Another swanky book launch at the D&Q shop!

Following White Rapids -- named "Best Comic of 2007" by The Onion -- Pascal Blanchet brings us Baloney. Winds swirl and darkness reigns over a hamlet perched atop a craggy peak. Russian fatalism sets the tone as Blanchet orchestrates the tale of a village butcher, his disabled daughter, and her tutor, in their doomed uprising against the swaggering Duke Shostakov, local governor and owner of the only heating company in town.

Curvy, retro lines and atmospheric, full-page panels evoke plaintive melodies, staccato passages and soaring solos. In a graphic novel about love and despair that is also a homage to the music of the 1930s and 40s, double bassists and trombonists lean into the frame, striking up a score that blends vaudeville with Kurt Weill and Russia's great modern composers. Rendered in two-color, red and black chiaroscuro, light struggles to emerge from darkness and endurance makes way for heroism, all to no avail. Read Baloney as a reverie composed to the melodies of Prokofiev and Shostakovich: a beautiful conjuring of moods, or a call to arms against the exorbitant rates charged by utilities.

Praise for White Rapids:
"It's rare to find a book as formally innovative and profoundly lovely as [White Rapids]." --The Onion

"Blanchet's drawings are like sheet music, too, each flowing naturally into the other as they tell the story not only of a singular place and time, but also deliver a subtle treatise about the toll progress takes on human scale." --The Montreal Gazette

5th annual Doug Wright Awards at TCAF '09 - the Jury

:: Posted by max @ 2/16/2009 10:10:00 PM

Toronto, ON - The 2009 Doug Wright Awards for Canadian Cartooning will be handed out Saturday, May 9th at the Art Gallery of Ontario's Jackman Hall in Toronto, Ontario, as part of the Toronto Comics Arts Festival (TCAF).

Now in its fifth year, The Wright Awards are Canada's premier awards event celebrating the best in English-language cartooning, from renowned cartoonists to the best in emerging talent and experimental comics.

This year's ceremony will also serve as the official launch party for The Collected Doug Wright: Canada's Master Cartoonist, the first of a two-volume retrospective to be published by Drawn and Quarterly.

The launch will feature an on-stage discussion of the life and career of the seminal Canadian cartoonist between Seth, the book's co-editor and designer, co-editor and writer Brad Mackay and Chris Oliveros, the book's publisher.

As usual, the 2009 DWA jury will be comprised of representatives from a wide swath of Canadian society, from arts and culture to politics and the media. The jury for the 5th annual awards is impressive. They are as follows:
Andrew Coyne, the national editor for Maclean's magazine and regular political panellist on CBC Television's The National.

Martin Levin, the books editor of The Globe and Mail and a contributor to several anthologies, including What I Meant to Say.

Joe Ollmann, a Montreal-based cartoonist and author of This Will All End in Tears, winner of the 2007 Doug Wright Award for Best Book.

Bob Rae, the Liberal Party of Canada's foreign affairs critic and the Member of Parliament for Toronto Centre. Rae served as the 21st premier of Ontario from 1990 to 1995.

Diana Tamblyn, an Ignatz-nominated Canadian cartoonist and author of several mini-comics, including The Rosie Stories and There You Were.

The Doug Wright Awards recognize the finest in Canadian comics in three categories: Best Book, Best Emerging Talent and the Pigskin Peters Award (which acknowledges the best in non-narrative or experimental comics).

Over the past five years, The Wright Awards have proudly featured a Who's Who of Canada's fertile comics scene at its podium, including Seth, Bryan Lee O'Malley, Michel Rabigliati, Lorenz Peter, Mariko and Jillian Tamaki, Joe Ollmann, Rebecca Kraatz, Ann Marie Fleming, Jeff Lemire and Julie Morstad.

D+Q book launch | Kaspar by Diane Obomsawin Feb 3rd

:: Posted by max @ 2/02/2009 11:48:00 PM
D+Q presents a book launch for Diane Obomsawin's Kaspar
facebook event page
Tuesday February 3rd
7:00pm - 10:00pm
211 Bernard O.
Bernard West
Montreal, QC

Kaspar is the story of a young man who appeared mysteriously in the streets of Nuremberg and died of knife wounds five years later under equally mysterious circumstances. The significance of his life has been disputed ever since.

In Kaspar, Quebec cartoonist Diane Obomsawin draws on Hauser's own writings, and contemporary accounts, to tell the foundling's strange story. Minimalist grayscale panels and the simplest of line work register the wonder and bewilderment of a trusting and sensitive soul emerging into a fickle society. Gentle and poetic, naïve and profound, Obomsawin's first book to appear in English translation is a quiet and compelling charm.

*****

Animations - ON THE STAGE

Action... Reaction !
For every action there is a reaction; that's how the ideas that take shape in an illustrator's head become a comic strip. The audience is invited to react to the zany ideas of the activity leader and provide inspiration.

Comics Action
Whether as an observer or a participant, don't miss this activity, which involves the impromptu creation of a storyboard in the form of comic strip sketches.

Comics to the Highest Bidder
An extraordinary auction! For sale: speech bubbles! The currency: words! May the best phrase win!

Live Illustration
During the festival, the guest artists will improvise a drawing before the eyes of the audience. Accompanied by an interview that will shed light on the author and his or her work, the activity will end with a draw for the signed illustration. Be there!

Express Yourself
Comic art professionals reveal the importance of expression in creating comic art characters and stories.

Discussion: Serie BD, la clef du succes?
Is the publication of a comic series a determining factor in a comic artist's success? Along with the guest artists of the 9th RVIBDG, discover what motivates artists to choose this route, and the hopes and disappointment that come along the way.

New Releases
Each year, the Rendez-vous de la BD offers comic fans the chance to discover recent newcomers to the comic art world. For the 9th edition of the RVIBDG, Kan-J and Paul Roux present their most recent publications to comic fans from the Outaouais.

Strip... teaser
Armed with sheets of paper, pencils and markers, spectators become illustrators during this activity. A super-effective method for discovering the various aspects of comic art, from scripting to creating a frame, and the search for expressions and angles.

Round table : La vie apres le bac BD
Several graduates of the comic art program at UQO will discuss the various professional avenues that have opened up to them since they finished their studies, and talk about their plans.

IN THE FOYER OF THE MUSEUM'S THEATRE
(Salon Marius-Barbeau)

Masters at Work - Presented by Desjardins
As visitors look on, the guest authors will take turns creating a giant comic strip based on a particular theme. Comic fans can watch the images take shape, plucked from the imagination of these comic art wizards!

Tele-Quebec's Little Library
In partnership with publishers of books for young people, Tele-Quebec is offering the youngest visitors of the Rendez-vous de la BD a selection of illustrated books and albums to read on site in a playful atmosphere and safe environment. An excellent occasion for young readers to lose themselves in the passionate adventures of the characters from the series for children aired on Tele-Quebec, such as Kaboum, Toupie et Binou, Toc Toc Toc and more!

BDmix Reading Room
Intended mainly for teenagers and adults, the BDmix reading room feeds into the BDmix activity by offering visitors a selection of approximately 50 albums to read on site.

EXHIBITIONS

BDmix - Presented by the French Embassy
Visit the BDmix exhibit and retrace the steps that have marked a century of French-language comics. Through the magic of the screen, BDmix will present 35 comic strips from original collections. Then, settle in and immerse yourself in the world of French-language comics by flipping through a collection of some 50 albums at your disposal.

Gilles Villeneuve... Le champion du peuple! - Presented by Desjardins
Formula 1 superstar Gilles Villeneuve not only left his mark on his era and on an entire generation of adrenaline junkies, but he was also immortalized in a comic strip! To tie this publication in with the 30th anniversary of his first win, the Musee Gilles Villeneuve will be presenting a collection of objects and images that will revive memories of this "people's champion".

Reality and the Fantastic: The Magic of the mundane
Craig A. Taillefer's "savoir-faire" is best revealed through his illustrations, which focus on ordinary people in extraordinary situations, slices of life taken from fiction or reality. This exhibit will provide you with the opportunity to get to know the illustrator, for whom the magic of fantasy goes hand-in-hand with the equally fascinating magic of the mundane.

Philippe Aymond, du reel a la BD
At the Alliance francaise d'Ottawa
From October 24 to 31, the walls of the Alliance francaise d'Ottawa will be adorned with an exhibit of approximately 30 original comic strips by Philippe Aymond. This selection, which represents only a fraction of the French illustrator's work, is taken from two decisive periods in his career. The first, from 1989 to 1999, looks at his collaboration with scriptwriter Pierre Christin, and the second, from 1999 to the present, looks at the creation of the series ApocalypseMania and Lady S.

Contest | Invente-moi un Schtroumpf!

To mark the 50th anniversary of the world-famous Smurfs, the Rendez-vous de la BD is teaming up with Radio-Canada's Premiere Chaine (90.7 FM) and LeDroit to present the contest Invente-moi un Schtroumpf! From October 14 to 17, between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., listen to Le monde selon Mathieu on 90.7 FM and discover the invented Smurf of the day. Write the Smurf's name on the entry ballot published daily in LeDroit for your chance to win one of five prizes, including the complete collection of albums featuring those odd little blue men created half a century ago by the illustrator Peyo.

GUESTS
shown in order in the pictures >>

Barely two years after Philippe Aymond finished his studies in the plastic arts, Les Humanoides Associes charged him with the task of creating illustrations for the Canal Choc series, based on scripts by Pierre Christin. This collaboration continued with the album L'Homme qui fait le tour du monde (1994) and the adventure series Les 4 x 4 (1997 a 2000). A second series, ApocalypseMania, written by Bollee, followed in 2000. In 2003, Jean Van Hamme, who was drawn in by the elegance and simplicity of Aymond's work, asked him to illustrate Lady S, a series in which action, suspense and modern adventures come together in a perfectly controlled geopolitical environment.

An architect by trade, Daniel Bosshart always had a strong penchant for comics. After publishing several illustrations, he produced his first solo work, Geteilter Traum (Shared Dream), in the late 90s. This album, which relies completely on the strength of the illustrations and contains no text, was awared the prize for Best Germanic Publication at the Erlangen Salon in 2000. Because he communicates through images, Daniel Bosshard has presented his readers with a new challenge in the form of Alberto, a work without text whose grandiose and detailed vignettes are open to endless interpretation.

Sandra Breault spent most of her childhood and adolescence poring over comic books. She began with French and Belgian comics, with a brief stop at alternative comic art, before moving over to manga. After studying plastic arts at college in her home region, Lanaudiere, she began her BA in comic art at the University of Quebec at Ouaouais (UQO). She graduated in the spring of 2008 with high honours; this achievement highlights the esthetics and lyricism of her final project. In her comic art, our talented next-generation ambassador draws inspiration from fairy tales and legends to show her readers the poetry that resides in the human spirit.

Thierry Coppee, a teacher originally from Brussels who studied illustration at the Ecole de Recherches Graphiques, spent four years teaching elementary school before dedicating himself to his art. Following a brief collaboration with Spirou magazine, he began working on Les Blagues de Toto for Editions Delcourt. In 2004, he created a humourous world full of teasing tenderness in which the situations and characters are centered around Toto, an impish little boy who possesses an extraordinary gift for witty retorts. With nearly 200 jokes under his belt, Thierry Coppee is currently putting the finishing touches on the 7th Blagues de Toto album while keeping a close eye on the production of the first Toto cartoons.

Johanna (Schipper) was born in Taiwan in 1967 and now lives in Bordeaux, France. After Chinese and Dutch, she learned French by reading Tintin! After finishing high school, she moved to Angoulême to study comic art at the Ecole Superieure de l'Image. She has worked as a colorist and as an organizer of exhibitions on French-language comics, and has also taught master classes to young authors in Vietnam. After publishing several short stories and illustrations, she again began working on the stories of Nana, the young heroine of Les Phosfees, and presented the series in colour to Editions Delcourt in 1999. Her most recent publication, a comic for adults entitled Nos âmes sauvages and published by Futuropolis, earned her the Artemisia award in January 2008.

Based in Montreal, Maxim Douglas - a.k.a. Salgood Sam - has always drawn, just like his parents. Even before leaving school, this self-taught artist began creating his own comics and selling them through specialty shops. At the age of 18, he left home and began his career as a professional illustrator. For almost 20 years, he has worked as a freelancer, producing a multitude of drawings for Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Kitchen Sink and the Montreal Mirror. While putting the finishing touches on his album entitled Therefore Repent, he received a bursary from the Canada Council of the Arts in 2007 that allowed him to begin work on his next publication, Dream Life.

When he was young, Marc Delafontaine dreamed of becoming a police officer. However, deciding that he was no good at swinging a baton, he instead opted for his first passion: illustrating. He began by illustrating educational brochures, then worked as an animator, and finally moved on to illustrating children's books and comics. In 2004, he and partner/scripwriter Maryse Dubuc gave birth to three hip and ruthless adolesencents who came screaming into the comic world with the series Les Nombrils, which has garnered acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic.

Maryse Dubuc developed a marked interest in school - and more particularly in writing - at a very young age. Her love of words soon developed into a true passion that lead her to study French literature at university. A colorist, author of books for young people and partner of illustrator Marc Delafontaine, she writes the adventures of Jenny, Vicky and Karine, the three young stars growing up in the sexy and cruelly hilarious world of the scathing series Les Nombrils.

Born into a family of artists from the Bas St-Laurent region, Michel Falardeau completed his studies in the late 90s, first studying plastic arts in Sainte-Foy, then animation at Riviere-du-Loup. After spending a number of years creating video games, he turned to comic books. In 2005, Les Editions Paquet (Switzerland) discovered his talent as a comic artist and published Mertownville. In the form of an intimate narrative, this three-volume series focuses on Lydia, a heroine unlike any other, who invites the reader to discover the secret lives of superheroes. While Michel Falardeau may claim that his own life is boring, he certainly cannot say the same for his characters!

As Craig A. Taillefer explains it, his diet as a young boy consisted of crayons, modeling clay and comic books. It is clear that his exposure at a very young age to the worlds of Asterix, Uncle Scrooge, Turok Son of Stone and others shaped his mind. Which is why, against the advice of those around him, he chose to pursue a career in the arts. For over two decades, Craig has earned a living as an illustrator. Whether in television animation, illustration or the creation of his comic series, Wahoo Morris, the artist divides his time between his obsession for illustration and his passion for old albums ...and hammocks!

SURPRISE GUESTS!

Each year, the Rendez-vous international de la bande dessinee de Gatineau has the pleasure of welcoming several comic artists who, in a few strokes of a pencil, add their talent to that of the guest artists. This years suprise guests are Tom Fowler and Kan-J. These two surprise guests will be joined by Paul Roux and the comic artist-hosts from Surpriz Comix.

Tonite: Idler's Glossary Launch, Toronto

:: Posted by Bryan @ 10/08/2008 01:09:00 AM

A new book by philosopher and public intellectual Mark Kingwell, ex-Hermenaut Joshua Glenn, and cartoonist Seth.

Toronto Booklaunch:

The Idler's Glossary

Hosted by This Is Not A Reading Series

Date: Wednesday, October 8, 2008
Time: 7:30-10pm (Doors at 7)
Location:1214 Queen Street West (The Gladstone Hotel Ballroom)

From the press release:

Can you admit that the desire to be idle has taken control of your life? Come to the Annual General Meeting of the Royal Society of the Indolent, where Mark Kingwell, Joshua Glenn and Seth will celebrate the release of The Idler's Glossary (Biblioasis) by outlining their "11 Step Program For Idlers" – A This Is Not A Reading Series event presented by Pages Books & Magazines, Biblioasis, and EYE WEEKLY.

THE IDLER'S GLOSSARY: "Dawdler." "Layabout." "Shit-heel." "Loser." For as long as mankind has had to work for a living, which is to say ever since the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, people who work have disparaged those who prefer not to. Joshua Glenn's glossary, which closely examines the etymology and history of hundreds of idler-specific terms and phrases aims not merely to correct popular misconceptions about idling, but to serve as a preliminary foundation for a new mode of thinking about working and not-working. Never again will you be able to describe an indolent person as "languid," Epicurean behavior as "dissipated," or an idler as a "slacker." Mark Kingwell's introductory essay offers a playful defence of the idler as the true citizen of the world, enlisting support from literary and philosophical sources, putting forward a case for the ultimate reevaluation of all values. Seth's charming illustrations highlight the pleasures of introducing a bit more idleness into life alongside the everyday horrors endured by the vast majority of those leading lives of quiet desperation. The Idler's Glossary is destined to become the Devil's Dictionary for the idling classes, necessary reading for any and all who wish to introduce more truly "free" time into their daily lives.

Thursday: Graphic Poetry or Poetry Comics? Toronto

:: Posted by Bryan @ 10/02/2008 12:14:00 AM

Pages' This Is Not A Reading Series and Tightrope Books presents the highly anticipated launch of

PAOLA POLETTO & JAKE KENNEDY, eds. — BOREDOM FIGHTERS!

and

SEAN STANLEY & KRISTI-LY GREEN — ETCETERA AND OTHERWISE

What is "graphic poetry"? Does it combine words and images in a manner unlike its more familiar cousin, the graphic novel? Sandra Kasturi and David Clink will co-host "Graphic Language", a joint launch designed to shed light on such perennial aesthetic riddles. Paola Poletto and Jake Kennedy assembled a collection of graphic poetry, Boredom Fighters. Sean Stanley and Kristi-Ly Green collaborated on a graphic novel, Etcetera and Otherwise . After moderating a group discussion with these four creators, Kasturi and Clink will turn their microphones over to a "graphic poetry slam". The night will end with a "graphic" dance party.

Thurs, Oct 2; 7:30pm (doors 7:00pm) free

Montrealer Matt Forsythe got the cover of this weeks Montreal Mirror and a nice big full page interview/profile inside by Rupert Bottenberg to announce the launch of his new D&Q book this coming weekend, Ojingogo.

"I feel like I'm just escorting this thing along, not driving it," says illustrator and comic artist Matt Forsythe of Ojingogo, his new graphic novel from Drawn & Quarterly. "It's kinda weird seeing my name on the cover-that's how dissociated I feel from it."

Publishing: Von Allan's "Li'l Kids: road to god knows... adventures!"

:: Posted by Bryan @ 8/19/2008 05:00:00 AM

Prolific blogger Von Allan, who has posted ceaselessly on his efforts to create and market his first graphic novel, "The Road to God Knows", has some exciting news: a companion volume to the book is finished and available in print. See the press release below:

Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (August 17, 2008) -- Comic books and graphic novels have, over the past twenty years, become a widely embraced medium in book publishing. Initially dismissed as children's entertainment, comics have now developed a maturity and range of vision that rivals other forms of art and literature. Graphic novels are read by people from all walks of life and have reached a level of critical acceptance that was unheard of decades ago. This resurgence has been led by a number of young artists who bring unique voices to the medium. Von Allan, an Ottawa-based artist and graphic novelist, joins this group with his recently published graphic novel "Li'l Kids: road to god knows ... adventures!"

"Graphic novels offer a combination of words and images that speak to us on a very fundamental level," says Allan. "In a way I think it's storytelling at its most primal form. It allows an author to engage with a reader in a way that's similar to literature and yet very, very different. Comics, when you come right down to it, are just ink marks on a piece of paper. That a reader can interpret that into a fully formed story is really quite remarkable. On top of it, so much of what makes sequential art come alive is defined by what's not there. The gutter space between each panel of art is very important. This is where the reader's imagination and personality comes into play. It's a beautiful medium and one I love exploring. Hopefully that sense of exploration comes across in 'Li'l Kids.'"

Another unique aspect of the graphic novel is its availability in multiple channels. "Li'l Kids" is downloadable as a free PDF eBook on the artist's website. In addition, a free torrent version is available via LegalTorrents.com. The graphic novel is distributed under a Creative Commons Canada licence that grants readers the ability to distribute the online versions of the book for free. "I believe in both print publishing and bookstores and I always have," says Allan. "But I also believe that obscurity is one of the hardest things for young artists to avoid. By using a variety of online distribution tools as well as more traditional print publishing, I'm hoping more people will get to know both myself and my work. I believe that this helps build a platform for my continued development as an artist and helps grow my audience at the same time. I'm also very pleased to see that the book is already available through a number of channels, notably online at both Amazon and Barnes & Noble."

"Li'l Kids" is a collection of three interlocked short stories that focus on elements from a young girl's life. We see Marie, the main character in each story, develop and grow; from meeting a new friend to her burgeoning awareness of both her family's poverty and her mom's mental illness. This later theme is more fully explored in the graphic novel "the road to god knows...;" Marie is only eight years old at the time of these three stories. As a result, she is only just beginning to be aware of the world around her and her place in it. Each story stands on its own but, when taken together, they demonstrate that childhood, like most aspects of life, can have its ups and downs. Being a child can be fun, scary, and magical; but sometimes the things that seem very little at the time can have a profound effect on you later on in life. That's certainly true for Marie and her experiences in these stories help to bear that out. Later, in "the road to god knows...," we see just how significant some of those events can be.

In addition to the three stories, this collection includes a large amount of supporting material. Concept and thumbnail art illustrate how each story was put together. Allan also discusses where each story's inspiration came from and how each story's initial idea formed. Lastly, he shows each step from story outline to completed script.

"Li'l Kids: road to god knows... adventures!" is an 88 page graphic novel and has an ISBN of 978-0-9781237-1-0. The suggested retail price is $13.95 US.

About Von Allan: Von Allan was born red-headed and freckled in Arnprior, Ontario, just in time for "Star Wars: A New Hope." He managed Perfect Books, an independent bookstore in Ottawa, for many years while working on story ideas in his spare time; eventually, he decided to make the leap to a creative life, and "the road to god knows..." was the result. Additional information about the graphic novel can be found at www.vonallan.com.
