First one of the spring, been a while since I've gone but they still have fun!
An evening of good-humoured drawing, conversation and, incidentally, a wee bit of drinking.

Bring your artistic weapons of choice, be it wits or brushes. Both, ideally.

Venez dessiner, discuter, prendre un verre et liberer vos energies creatrices en notre compagnie. Aiguisez-bien vos crayons et votre esprit, on vous attend!

We will be selling zines, so if you want to bring me some of your zines to sell, I can shill them for you. Email me if you need more details. There's no alcohol :( so this is a great event for people looking for a comic jam with a daytime vibe. I'll email more updates in February.

TORONTO COMIC JAM SEPTEMBER 29th!

:: Posted by max @ 9/28/2009 11:50:00 PM
"Autumn is finally here, let's draw!"

What is a comic jam?? One artist draws the first panel, and then another artist draws the next panel, and then a different artist draws the next panel.... and keeps going until the page is finished.

At the end of the night, we put the pages together and publish it in our own jam book available at the next monthly jam session.

Everyone is invited to participate (but only 19+; the Cameron House is a bar).

So bring some drawing utensils (we provide paper), and some friends, and come join us.

Charlottetown Comic Jam September 30th

:: Posted by max @ 9/28/2009 11:42:00 PM
It's that time again to Drink and Draw.... This months theme is "Post apocalyptic/Zombies!"....Both have been so far beyond overdone in all media, that I thought it could yield some funny results from our jaded group of art fiends.

The Charlottetown Comic Jam provides a venue for local comic artists to meet and socialize, creating a unique experience and furthering the sense of community. Participants each take a turn drawing a panel before handing the page off to another artist. The result is a collaborative story, built by several artists. All comics are then placed on the FaceBook page for all to see.

The Charlottetown Comic Jam is held at Baba's Lounge on the last Wednesday of each month starting at 8pm.

ALL SKILL LEVELS ARE WELCOME!

Ed Brisson writes:

After a two month break, we're back.

A couple quick notes:

The Clubhouse has asked if we could do some Clubhouse related jam strips this time out. I'm happy to oblige the request. Not sure what a Clubhouse related strip would look like, but am more than happy to find out.

Secondly, the kind folks at Mongrel Media have given me a few passes to an advance screening of Moon (June 24th, 7pm). I have an extremely limited number of these 2 person passes and will be giving them out on a first come, first served basis at the jam. Please only take a pass if you know that you'll be able to make the screening. For the sake of being completely fair, I won't be holding passes for anyone -- you want them, you have to get them from me at the jam.

Moon synopsis and trailer here: http://www.mongrelmedia.com/theatrical/info.cgi?id=1649 .

As usual, I’ve reserved the upstairs room at the Clubhouse Japanese Restaurant for the Jam.

If you’re drawing with markers that bleed through paper, be sure to either bring a drawing surface or place extra sheets of paper under the paper you’re drawing on.

Crosspost as you see fit.

Montreal D&D Comics Jam!

:: Posted by max @ 4/10/2009 05:00:00 AM
Co facebook and the D&D Montreal blog

For the next D&D we decided to resurrect the Comics Jam! [Ed:they are not dead, but they have not happen at Casa Del Popolo in about 4 or so years]
What is a "Comics Jam"? It’s a collaborative drawing party, and YOU are invited.

HOW: Bring a nice piece of paper, divide it up into segments, and start drawing (painting, colouring…). When you have filled one square you pass it to someone else and they fill the next square and pass it on. There are no rules, styles vary, stories unfold, people fall in love, wars break out, the world is knocked off it’s axis, Days of Our Lives is still on television, shit is fun.

WHERE: Casa del Popolo, 4873 St-Laurent
WHEN: Wednesday, April 15 7 p.m.
WHY: Because.

Kid Koala Presents Music To Draw To - Montreal

:: Posted by max @ 3/02/2009 05:43:00 PM
An evening of quiet time records to warm up those creative juices in this sub-zero weather.

It's winter time in Montreal...

Are you slacking off on knitting that scarf you started in 2004? Maybe you've been trying to finish that third act of that play you've been writing...? How's that collection of Sonnets coming along? Are you still sketching out storyboards for that animated short you wanted to make?

Bring your sketchbook, yarn, or that lump of clay. Floor lamps, pens, knitting needles, and lap desks will be provided. Five bucks admission includes a free cup of hot chocolate or tea. Music will be provided by Kid Koala. Expect a full 5-hour set of some of his favorite quiet time records that he has collected on his travels around the world. Baked goods will be provided by Kid Koala's wife, Corinne, who dreams of someday opening a bakery in Montreal and would like to try some of her new creations first.

Quiet people are invited. Bring something to work on. No dancing. Hope to see you there!

from BDQ

Vendredi 7 novembre,
et puis mensuelle a partir de.

Atomic Comic Jam
"Notre but est d'avoir du plaisir avec des gens qui partagent des interets communs c'est-a-dire : dessiner, faire de la bande dessinee et raconter des histoires. Vous pouvez dessiner seul ou en groupe en dessinant une case et en passant ensuite votre feuille a votre voisin pour que celui-ci continu votre BD et ainsi de suite pour le reste de la page.

De cette facon, une mrme page peut avoir plusieurs styles et aboutir a des histoires tres loufoques. Chaque premier vendredi du mois."

A new Monthly Comic Jam has been started in the East end of Montreal, at Cafe Atomic. Their goals are to "have fun with people who share common interests ie: drawing, comics and telling stories."

They have liberal guidelines for the event, you can collaborate with your neighbors or doodle on your own, up to you. The event will be held every first Friday of the month!

Vancouver Comix Jam Changes

:: Posted by Bryan @ 6/03/2008 12:02:00 AM
This month's jam is being incorporated into the KRAZY! gallery show at the Vancouver Art Gallery:

From Leonard Wong (via Ed Brisson):

The artists' jam at FUSE takes place on Friday, June 27, from 6PM to 6AM. If you're wanting to take part in this event, I need to know by this Friday (June 6). The VAG is asking for a minimum four hour commitment during the evening, so if all participants can indicate to me (again, by Friday) when you'll be available/willing to draw, I can make sure there are people in the room all night, which keeps the VAG happy.

Whether called graphic novels, comic books, bandes dessinees or sequential art, comics aren't just for kids any more. We will explore the artistic variety and potential inherent in comics - starting with an overview of comics, moving on to making them ourselves. Pencils, paper and some ink and dip pens will be available for use, but you are heartily encouraged to bring other artistic materials and / or laptops if you wish to explore comic-making in more varied forms. Come equipped with a comic book idea and you'll be ready to jump right in.

Vinyl Graffiti Labyrinth

:: Posted by max @ 2/02/2008 12:24:00 PM
Toronto Manga and animation art bookshop The Labyrinth is holding their first submission based art show -Vinyl Graffiti. A one day event, the Show is on Saturday Feb 9th. 7-10pm.

"What you should expect to see is a plethora of really cool, imaginative and interesting paintings, drawings and other creative systems applied to old record album covers. The subjects are diverse, but what ties every piece together is the format. Many of the pieces will be up for sale - so if you're in the market for some original art - this will be your chance. Many of the artists will be there for the evening to talk to."

FREE PRIZES AND GAMES:
The Labyrinth will be handing out over 50 prizes for folks participating in what we call Character Design Face Off's. Here's how it works. We will have two easels set up where two people (one of which can be YOU!) will face off against each other for fun and prizes. They will have to draw a character design on the spot, based on a subject we pick. For example ' Moose in a beaver suit' or 'Troll in an evening gown on fire' and other stupid ideas. The goal is to have fun and laughs - all a while earning prizes for the winners. Winners will be decided by those attending via the sophisticated system we call Applause. You don't have to be an artist to join in the games -so come one, come all and good luck! The silliness will be repeated every 3 minutes - so as many of you can take a turn as possible.

Tonite: Extraction Book Launch, Toronto

:: Posted by Bryan @ 1/29/2008 05:16:00 PM
When Comix and Journalism Collide …

Journalistic graphic novel portrays the dirty business of global
resource extraction in the 21st century.

TORONTO Tuesday, January 29, 2008
COMIX JAM The Cameron House, 408 Queen Street West
LAUNCH 8:00 p.m. info: 416-703-0811

http://www.cumuluspress.com/extraction

Cumulus Press recently released a new title EXTRACTION! Comix Reportage.
This 'graphic novel' started with four journalistic stories about the
mining industry. These stories were scripted then handed over to four
comix artists (including 2007 Doug Wright Award winner, Joe Ollmann) to
create a multi-styled comic book about mining that, according to Joe
Sacco, "is the perfect idea for a graphic treatment."

Cumulus Press will launch this book of comix journalism within the
January edition of the Toronto Comix Jam, whose jammers will create
collective strips of journalism based on articles provided for the
evening. Here the challenge will persist between the 'give' of
verifiable facts and the 'take' of graphic interpretation, between the
'push' of fact-based details and the 'pull' of visual narrative. The
craft of comix journalism does not stem from the combination of text and
image, content and structure. It is the added meaning derived from the
interaction between the symbolic and the realistic, the literal and the
figurative that gives it strength.

The extraction of natural resources today is a dirty business. Since
2000, most energy and mineral prices are skyrocketing. Junior mining
prospectors and unscrupulous transnational corporations rush into new
territories to suck what's hot out of the earth's lucrative veins. In
today's gas, oil and mining industries, the pace of exploration,
extraction, transformation and delivery of the world's resources is mind
boggling. The German magazine Der Spiegel speaks of a Third World War
for the world's resources. It is more like a blitzkrieg.

EXTRACTION! looks into the exploration, exploitation and extraction
gold, bauxite, uranium and oil, from a common-good social justice
perspective, in Guatemala, India, Quebec and Alberta, respectively.

Everyone, pros and amateurs alike, are welcome to participate!

Cheap, good beer available of course (quality McAusland product!).

Nov:1st - DRINK & DRAW @ Main Hall in Montreal | "I don't want to hear no 'I can't draw'".

:: Posted by max @ 10/25/2007 03:11:00 AM

Co:Billy Mavreas

So there. You drink, you draw, the more you drink, the sillier your drawings get, and the more fun you have. There are gonna be people who can draw and people who can't draw. People who can drink and people who can't drink. And if you get bored with drawing (which you shouldn't because drunk drawing is FUN~) then you can just go look at other people's funny doodles -we usually maskin-tape them to the wall.
Seriously, when was the last time you sat and drew, eh?

FR

Hein, hein?

Vancouver Jam vs 24 Hr Comix Day

:: Posted by Bryan @ 10/19/2007 01:54:00 AM
via Ed Brisson:

it's two days until the jam and I have still not been able to secure a venue. I've followed up on all of the leads that have been sent my way but none have panned out - either the place is already booked or they have some sort of event going on already.

I'm still looking, but things are not looking good for this month.

HOWEVER, someone brought to my attention that this Saturday is ALSO 24 Hour Comic Day. So, instead of meeting at one venue, why don't we have pockets of people meeting all over during the day (an idea suggested by someone else here) and then meeting later in the eve at a pub to celebrate. This way, we can have smaller groups pushing each other to create their 24 hour comic.

The easiest thing to do, might be to comment here or go over to the Crown Commission message board (www.crowncommission.com/phpbb2) and discuss in the VCJ October thread. Arrange where you guys want to meet. Suggest pubs and I guess we can all meet up at whatever seems to be the better idea.

As for venues -- I'm still looking. I'm open to all suggestions. I have a couple places that might work for November, but nothing for this month. What I would ideally like to do is find a cafe that is licenced and maybe closes earlier on a Saturday. I could pay for a staff member if they're willing to open up for us. OR, if there is a hall/meeting space/centre/theatre/whatever, that could be rented for a couple hundred bucks (or less) on a regular basis. It would have to be someplace that would allow us to serve booze.

Please, keep the ideas coming.

Developing the Comix Industry?

:: Posted by Bryan @ 10/13/2007 02:10:00 AM
The Comic Books Bin's Herve St-Louis issues a manifesto/business plan for developing something he calls a "Local Comic Book Industry":

Several cities, such as Montreal, have jamming sessions organized by local comic book creators. Why not try to schedule one of them during a comic book convention and invite the public to watch how comics are made on the spot? One of the best cross promotion effort I have witnessed was in 2005 at a Montreal fashion and art show with a comic book theme. The problem organizers had was convincing local comic book artists to participate with the organization. They were reluctant to see paintings and sculptures inspired by comic book themes.

It strikes me that there are already several thriving "local comic book industries" in this country and in the U.S. that have developed both organically and through various forms of central planning since 1980, but St-Louis' article, besides including some impressive business-school-style graphics, has some interesting suggestions.

Vancouver Comix Jam: Cancelled

:: Posted by Bryan @ 9/13/2007 06:10:00 AM
From Ed Brisson, organizer in chief of the Vancouver Comic Jam:

Hey folks,

Sorry for the late notice on this, but the venue for the jam has been COMPLETELY booked for this saturday and is not available the following Saturday due to UFC (again!).

Maybe it's time to look at an alternative venue for situations like this. If anyone has suggestions, please fire them my way. Maybe we can sort out some sort of more informal place to meet up this month.

I have us booked in for October 20th at Original Joes, so at least that will happen.
