Toronto Winter Comicon Wrap-Up

:: Posted by Bryan @ 3/01/2010 06:38:00 AM

Some quick links from this past weekends Hobbystar Comicon in T.O. Everyone seems to have cut it short to watch the Gold Medal hockey game:

Jason Truong's shortest con ever.

Milo from Digital Konent says it was "packed!"

Ty from Doing the Batusi blog liveblogs the whole shebang. (That's his photo up top)

He also blogged the Guy Davis event Friday.

Eric Orchard experienced things here and here.

This Weekend: Con-G Anime Event, Guelph

:: Posted by Bryan @ 2/19/2010 11:46:00 AM

The Guelph anime convention, Con-G (both a short form for "Convention Guelph" and a pun on the Japanese word "kanji" which means pictograms, I think --although "congee" is a rice porridge popular in many Asian cultures) takes place this weekend.

Guests include webcomicker Lar deSouza, Doctor Holocaust, the 404s improv troupe, Savage Bandito, Solar Tempest, Stillvisions, Featherweight, and Hypersapiens.

Back for year 2, Con-G is

"being held at the Best Western Royal Brock Hotel & Conference Centre (same location, the hotel changed names shortly after Con-G 2009) on February 20 and 21.

What's special about our convention? Guelph is an awesome location! We're currently the only convention west of Toronto [In Ontario], making us more convenient for people in London, Hamilton and the Tri-City area. The Best Western is located across from the university and near the centre of Guelph. It is easily accessed by bus or car. Finally, the convention takes place in February, at a time when there are few other anime conventions.

For those that don't know, an anime convention is a place where anime enthusiasts come to share their love for anime and have a great time! There will be anime, themed games, dancing, vendors, discussions and much more. It's a great opportunity to meet people interested in the same things you are and discuss your favourite shows. Don't be intimidated! We welcome the young, the old, the casual anime enthusiast and the most hardcore fans. There's something for everyone."

Toronto Comicon offers half tables for March 26-28

:: Posted by max @ 1/20/2010 06:35:00 PM
M is for comics.

May is
TCAF
and March marks
the return
of Paradise Toronto Comicon,
now part of the

wizardworld universe.

Got this from Peter Dixon, wasn't aware there was a fuss over the pricing but good news for exhibitors in any case, they are offering an accessible price for half tables. Don't know if i can make it but we'll see. If all goes well it would be good to be there.

Hello everyone and Happy New Year. I hope your holidays were enjoyable.
Things are coming along well for our show coming up in March. I have received allot of feedback from many of you concerned with the higher prices compared to our shows in the past. Because of this we have a few options to offer. First we are lowering the price to $210 CDN plus GST. We are also offering four foot tables at $129 CDN plus GST. Hopefully this will allow everybody to be able to participate this year if they want to.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
Thanks

Jack Ruttan at the Montreal Comic Con

:: Posted by max @ 12/07/2009 07:30:00 PM
The Montreal Comic Con had it's December one day event this past Sunday.

Despite plans to attend i missed it, but local writer and cartoonist Jack Ruttan [utopiamoment.ca] was there and has uploaded another impressive set of interviews and photos. We've collected the video into a playlist you wan watch bellow, along with the slide show of photos bellow that. Read Jack's musings about it on his site here.

"Didn't I just do one of these in September? And then there was Expozine last month. So, many of these artist seemed like old friends. It was fun brandishing around my little Lumix DMC-FS3 and talking to artists. Sound was a little off (and some interviews are in French), but I think things are audible if you turn up the volume."

In the playlist appears Convention organizers Oscar and Elizabeth. Eric Theriault, Isabelle Stephen, Michel Lacombe, Sid Vane and Gloria, Patrick Langlois, Troma, Jimmy Suzan, Fred Mahieu, Steph Dumais, Noumier Tawilah, Jipi McCloud, And Janardan.

And for the first time, this year’s edition will feature a program of readings and discussions each afternoon.

At Expozine, you’ll discover a universe of publications and printed works that is hard to find anywhere, much less all in the same room! It’s your opportunity to meet hundreds of young and emerging authors, publishers and artists, and see what the winners of last year’s Expozine Alternative Press Awards are up to.

Coming Soon: Ottawa Comics Show

:: Posted by Bryan @ 10/28/2009 12:59:00 AM
From the organizers:
"The Big One" Sunday November 22nd / 2009

"Hi; It is that time of year again and Ottawa's semi-annual Civic centre show is just around the corner. We will be presenting our fall show in just under four weeks from today.

I will be posting notices in the next few weeks of different show features including a possible autograph session with a Montreal Canadians Hall of Fame player.

Professional card grading will be back with card grading done right on site... no sending your valuable cards away to the U.S.

I am also happy to announce that the Lansdowne administration has confirmed a change of venue to a much better facility. We were originally slated to be in the downstairs Salon's however we have been moved to the Aberdeen Pavilion / "Cattle Castle". If you remember a few shows back, we had a convention in this building and the benefits are many including ground floor load in for dealers and lots of natural lighting. This is a unique setting and I have been told that the Ottawa Senators won their last Stanley Cup in 1927 in this very same building.

The card tables are almost sold out so if you are a card dealer and haven't confirmed your space or are unsure of your status please drop me a line or give me a call.

There are still six comic tables available for rent.

There is an Ottawa 67's hockey game at 2:00 p.m. the same day as well as the weekly farmers market so paid parking will be in effect with a $5.00 charge per car AFTER 8:00 a.m. so all early risers get a $5.00 bonus as long as you are in the park before 8:00 a.m.

More news later this week.........."

Free Admission

FanExpo 3

:: Posted by Bryan @ 9/02/2009 06:21:00 AM

Another big linkdump: more links, blog reports, and photos from the recently completed Toronto FanExpo.

Jamie Coville almost deserves a post of his own (but I've added some other links at the bottom), doing yeoman work covering the entire comics world of the con with photos, tape, and reporting.

Coville sums up his soon-to-be-published report via email: "In short, the convention got a huge surge in attendance. It was up 23% to 59,000 people according to the official press release. Most comic dealers I talked to said it was an up year and did say there was more people than last year. Artists Alley was a little more diverse in terms of sales but most of the ones I talked to said it was better. The downside to the increased attendance was the amount of people on the one floor waiting to get tickets. The con has 3 floors, 1st floor to get tickets, a 2nd with panel rooms and a 3rd where the convention itself. On Friday and Saturday Fire Marshals delayed people from going down to the ticket floor until the crowd moved down into the other 2 floors.

Friday and Saturday was hot but by 1:30pm Saturday afternoon you could feel the air conditioner working. DC and Marvel officially had booths at the show (as did Boom!) DC's booth was manned by Fan Expo volunteers/staff and they it was a U shaped table set up with a ton of free stuff, After Watchmen 1st issue books, This years FCBD book, plenty of buttons and posters. By the end of the convention they only had a small stack of CMX Preview books. Marvel's booth had very little in terms of free swag and was pretty much a stripped down version of the San Diego booth. They did have a table set up where some of their artists would do scheduled autograph sessions. They also had a speaker system and fun rock/pop music playing.

Other gifts from Coville:
128 pictures

Panel audio:
Spotlight on J. Michael Straczynski (73:39, 67.4mb)
JMS answers questions from the crowd about his work and tells some very funny stories about his path to becoming an established writer. Highlights include his encounters with his hero Rod Sterling and his faking his graduation from school to please his parents.

Stanley Cup of Joe (59:42, 54.6mb)
Joe Quesada along with Arune Singh (Manager of Sales Communications), CB Cebulski and Mike Pasciullo answer fan questions about everything Marvel.

Spotlight on Darwyn Cooke (56:21, 51.6mb)
Cartoonist Darwyn Cooke speaks about his Parker: The Hunter Graphic Novel adaptation. He also talks about behind the scenes stories about how a Spirit animated movie almost came to pass, the New Frontier animated movie and future work. Darwyn is very open and candid in this spotlight. The Panel was moderated by Robert Haines. I should note I was a few minutes late for the beginning of the panel.

Writing Comics with Len Wein (51:08, 46.8mb)
Industry Veteran Len Wein does a panel about writing comics and writing in general. He starts off with a small talk about the subject then asks the audience for questions. Much of the audience was interested in becoming writers and asked pretty on topic questions.

Mondo Marvel (52:30, 48mb)
Joe Quesada, Arune Singh, Kathryn Immonen (writer), Tom Brennan (Spider-man Assistant Editor) and CB Cebulski. Off to the side was Mike Pasciullo. They start off promoting some of upcoming books then go into taking questions from the audience. A couple of audience members vent their frustration over One More Day storyline and the recent Marvel Diva's book. The rest of them asked questions about everything Marvel. There was also some good natured ribbing regarding DC doing Wednesday Comics vs their online comics.

FanExpo 2: Over 59, 000 Attendees

:: Posted by Bryan @ 9/01/2009 06:58:00 AM
More highlights from the 3-day comics/horror/sci-fi/anime/gaming event from this past weekend in Toronto. According to owner Aman Gupta in his "Letter from the president" posted on the FanExpo homepage, this year's show saw "a 22% increase in
attendance from last year with a record-breaking crowd of more than 59, 000 visitors." The letter also notes the huge wait-times and line-ups that many bloggers have complained about, adding, "we have learned from the 2009 experience and
are already implementing changes to make the entry process smoother, faster, and more efficient for 2010."

On with the show:

-Best post so far: cartoonist Tara Tallan has a great thoughtful post about the place of Small Press comics at the show. I wondered last year at the nonsensical placement of print-sellers and macrame and fan artists next to young giants on their way to creating the great Canadian graphic novel.
-Kevin Boyd, the man behind the comics guestlist at the con, weighs in with a "state of the industry" report and talks numbers and Canadian content.
-a nice round-up of cartoonist-themed events and personalities from Darrell Ferguson
-The Beat reports!
-Darwyn Cooke panel
-Get yer Didio hate on, Teen Titans fans
-cosplay photos
-Steampunk X-Men
-Billy Dee Williams is still alive!

Two new web sites to check out.

The Montreal Comic Con has some new crew members and a new look, the site has been re-launched with information about the upcoming September show, it's in Beta mode so they are inviting feedback - check it out and let them know...

We just launched the brand new Montreal Comic-Con website - www.montrealcomiccon.com. Please feel free to send us your comments and/or suggestions about it. Any comments and/or suggestions regarding the event itself are also welcomed.

See you in September!

Oscar, Elizabeth and Alex :)
Mini-site for Sword of My Mouth & How To Enjoy Research

Publisher Author and DIY king Jim Munroe has set up a mini site for Sword of My Mouth, the sequel to Therefore Repent! and also has a little advice for one of my favorite things but not his, how to enjoy Research!
We've just launched the mini-site for Sword of My Mouth, making the first two issues (and commentary from me and Shannon) available for subscribers and people who've pre-ordered the graphic novel. It's the first third (48 pages) of the book so far, and we'll be adding a chapter every other month until we launch the complete graphic novel edition at next year's Toronto Comic Arts Festival.

One of the things we did differently with this book was research, and so I'll take this opportunity to write a bit about that...

Wizard Buys Toronto Paradise Con

:: Posted by Bryan @ 6/25/2009 10:56:00 AM
This appears to be fairly big news.

The Paradise Comicon has been lagging in second place behind Hobbystar's giant Fanexpo for awhile now and suffered a blow when Kevin Boyd migrated some time back.

Paradise Comics owner Peter Dixon has now sold the convention off to Wizard's Gareb Shamus, according to a press release posted here. No dollar amount has been indicated.
[thanks to Dirk Deppey for the heads up!]

It is unclear whether the new Canadian addition to the Wizard publishing and convention empire will add to the apparently moribund company's bottom line or whether, as Tom Spurgeon suggests, it is a sideways move for Wizard-owner Shamus.

Reportedly, the Paradise con has had a hard time ever turning a profit, and was cancelled this year due to scheduling problems.

A problem, as Kevin Boyd notes on Jason Truong's blog, that may continue to plague the re branded con.

The next show is planned for 2010 with founder Peter Dixon still on board in some capacity to maintain the con's traditionally much more relaxed atmosphere according to The Beat, which is good news probably to many of the creators and dealers who've appreciated that distinction between the Conventions.

MoCCA 2009 - Hot in many ways

:: Posted by max @ 6/11/2009 02:42:00 PM
So MoCCA 2009 was last weekend, i just got back from NY and i'm still getting back into my routine.

I planed on doing a lot more reporting myself but in the end not so much. I did snag a video of one panel that was pretty good - Making Good Comics in a New Era - and made a short overview clip from the little bit of footage i took at the show - it was insanely big, hot, and packed with books and i kind of short circuited and forgot to keep shooting after the first hour of day two.

..

..

The Beat links are many, those here.
MoCCA '09: How can something so cool be so hot?
MoCCA memories
MoCCA: Photo parade

Also found this via Heidi, the audio for the Gary Panter and Raymond Sohn panel.

Hung out a lot with the Indy Spiner Rack guys at the show, i don't mince words when i say you could not meet a nicer couple of guys! I owe them for the suport and for putting me up for a few hours when i missed my Train! Man, what a day that was. Some epic exhaustion.

They Reported on the event this year, had a talk with MoCCA board member Fred Van Lente who does a great job answering some tough questions!

So my final word is I had a great time. The heat messed me up and made it hard to think strait sometimes. But it was great to see friendly faces and there were soooo MANNY comics to look at. Saw increadable abstract stuff by Andrei Molotiu and had a great encounter with Bob Fingerman, one of my favorite Comix creators from when I was a punk kid. Made a few new freinds and amused myself when I spaced out and unwittingly stole a book from Brian Wood - made up for it by swapping for it, hope he liked what he got.

I didn't want to have to carry too much back with me but managed to snag a nice selection for the collection. If i find the time i'll try to do a bit of a quick list with stars or something - have a few books now backed up to read soon.

Rover out.

The C-List: Once and Future Comics

:: Posted by Bryan @ 4/08/2009 01:33:00 PM
Item: Quill and Quire has the lowdown on a promotional comic book from Harper Collins:
"the company sent retailers across the country about 4,000 copies of a promotional comic book it created, called The Literates. The comic features the exploits of bookselling superheroes Spine and Paige, who endeavour – in the first issue, at any rate – to convince a reader to purchase American author Christopher Moore's Fool. [...] The eight-page pamphlet has the look and feel of a real comic, and it comes in a protective plastic sleeve with cardboard backing, just like at a real comic book store."

Item: David Collier, look out: You have a challenger in the Hamilton sketching department! McMaster art student Tings Chak is planning a monumental graphic novel about the people and architecture of Lunchbucket City.

Item: The most cosmically significant comic book from DC this week features a story by Guelph homeboy Jay Stephens. Cartoon Network Action Pack #36 has a cover and interior art from Jay and is devoted to his tv show, The Secret Saturdays.

Item: The Globe's James Adams reports that a new alternative to the canceled Book Expo will be held this summer. The new shindig, which publisher's are boycotting, is
"prosaically called Canadian Booksellers Association Summer Conference 2009, will be held June 20-21 in a hotel on Toronto's downtown waterfront. Billed as "stronger, smarter, shorter and sweeter" than BookExpo, it promises a potpourri of events and opportunities - professional development sessions, an awards ceremony, panel discussions with publishing executives, author presentations, previews of marketing, promotion and advertising plans."
Item: The first review I've seen of Seth's new graphic novel, George Sprott.

Item: You can see more of the awesome Pascal Blanchet photo above in this article. Blanchet is also interviewed on CBC radio's Q (along with Billy Bob Thronton). Listen to the podcast.

2009 Toronto Paradise Con Cancelled

:: Posted by Bryan @ 3/20/2009 12:01:00 AM
The 2009 Paradise Toronto Comicon has been cancelled due to problems with fixing a date and booking a venue. According to an email circulated to comics professionals and dealers on Thursday by Peter Dixon of Paradise Comics, the July 4 weekend was the only potential date offered to the con and was deemed inadequate. The popular summer convention is second only to the Hobbystar convention in terms of traditional comic cons in Toronto. However, according to former organizer Kevin Boyd, who defected from Paradise in 2007, the con has not always been financially renumerative. In 2008 the Paradise con was held over the July 12 weekend at the Holiday Inn on King St. According to Dixon's letter:

"it has been decided that putting a show on that weekend
would not be wise. Reasons for this are summer vacations, camp and
cottage season as well as a lack of interest from American dealers and
possible attendees.

I have been in discussions with someone from the Hyatt Regency
(formerly the Holiday Inn) and the only other date they could offer
was our Thanksgiving weekend. The dates we had been looking towards
have been late October and November.

Unfortunately it looks like we are going to have postpone our show for
this year. We will definitely be working towards doing a show in 2010.
With all the upheaval of shows in the next few years (Wizard moving
and canceling shows, and Reed Expositions expanding into Chicago and
moving their New York dates) we will be working on moving into an open
timeslot. Hopefully we will be making our 2010 announcement in early
January of 2010."

Coville's Clubhouse

:: Posted by max @ 2/05/2009 01:12:00 AM
The Febuary edition of Collector Times has and interview by Jamie Coville with Doug Simpson, manager of Paradise Comics "about the state of the industry, including the changes recently announced by Diamond Distributors."

"I understand that Diamond is having to deal with a harsh economic reality and I know they are doing what they have to do to survive. Our shop has a very dedicated group of buyers and we know what will sell for us and what will sit on the shelf. I realize that some retailers are happy that they will not have as much work but some real quality books will be lost. I'll just have to order directly from the publisher in those cases. "

Animations - ON THE STAGE

Action... Reaction !
For every action there is a reaction; that's how the ideas that take shape in an illustrator's head become a comic strip. The audience is invited to react to the zany ideas of the activity leader and provide inspiration.

Comics Action
Whether as an observer or a participant, don't miss this activity, which involves the impromptu creation of a storyboard in the form of comic strip sketches.

Comics to the Highest Bidder
An extraordinary auction! For sale: speech bubbles! The currency: words! May the best phrase win!

Live Illustration
During the festival, the guest artists will improvise a drawing before the eyes of the audience. Accompanied by an interview that will shed light on the author and his or her work, the activity will end with a draw for the signed illustration. Be there!

Express Yourself
Comic art professionals reveal the importance of expression in creating comic art characters and stories.

Discussion: Serie BD, la clef du succes?
Is the publication of a comic series a determining factor in a comic artist's success? Along with the guest artists of the 9th RVIBDG, discover what motivates artists to choose this route, and the hopes and disappointment that come along the way.

New Releases
Each year, the Rendez-vous de la BD offers comic fans the chance to discover recent newcomers to the comic art world. For the 9th edition of the RVIBDG, Kan-J and Paul Roux present their most recent publications to comic fans from the Outaouais.

Strip... teaser
Armed with sheets of paper, pencils and markers, spectators become illustrators during this activity. A super-effective method for discovering the various aspects of comic art, from scripting to creating a frame, and the search for expressions and angles.

Round table : La vie apres le bac BD
Several graduates of the comic art program at UQO will discuss the various professional avenues that have opened up to them since they finished their studies, and talk about their plans.

Animations
IN THE FOYER OF THE MUSEUM'S THEATRE
(Salon Marius-Barbeau)

Masters at Work - Presented by Desjardins

EXHIBITIONS

BDmix - Presented by the French Embassy
Visit the BDmix exhibit and retrace the steps that have marked a century of French-language comics. Through the magic of the screen, BDmix will present 35 comic strips from original collections. Then, settle in and immerse yourself in the world of French-language comics by flipping through a collection of some 50 albums at your disposal.

Reality and the Fantastic: The Magic of the mundane
Craig A. Taillefer's "savoir-faire" is best revealed through his illustrations, which focus on ordinary people in extraordinary situations, slices of life taken from fiction or reality. This exhibit will provide you with the opportunity to get to know the illustrator, for whom the magic of fantasy goes hand-in-hand with the equally fascinating magic of the mundane.

Philippe Aymond, du reel a la BD
At the Alliance francaise d'Ottawa
From October 24 to 31, the walls of the Alliance francaise d'Ottawa will be adorned with an exhibit of approximately 30 original comic strips by Philippe Aymond. This selection, which represents only a fraction of the French illustrator's work, is taken from two decisive periods in his career. The first, from 1989 to 1999, looks at his collaboration with scriptwriter Pierre Christin, and the second, from 1999 to the present, looks at the creation of the series ApocalypseMania and Lady S.

Contest | Invente-moi un Schtroumpf!

To mark the 50th anniversary of the world-famous Smurfs, the Rendez-vous de la BD is teaming up with Radio-Canada's Premiere Chaine (90.7 FM) and LeDroit to present the contest Invente-moi un Schtroumpf! Barely two years after Philippe Aymond finished his studies in the plastic arts, Les Humanoides Associes charged him with the task of creating illustrations for the Canal Choc series, based on scripts by Pierre Christin. This collaboration continued with the album L'Homme qui fait le tour du monde (1994) and the adventure series Les 4 x 4 (1997 a 2000). A second series, ApocalypseMania, written by Bollee, followed in 2000. In 2003, Jean Van Hamme, who was drawn in by the elegance and simplicity of Aymond's work, asked him to illustrate Lady S, a series in which action, suspense and modern adventures come together in a perfectly controlled geopolitical environment.

An architect by trade, Daniel Bosshart always had a strong penchant for comics. After publishing several illustrations, he produced his first solo work, Geteilter Traum (Shared Dream), in the late 90s. This album, which relies completely on the strength of the illustrations and contains no text, was awared the prize for Best Germanic Publication at the Erlangen Salon in 2000. Because he communicates through images, Daniel Bosshard has presented his readers with a new challenge in the form of Alberto, a work without text whose grandiose and detailed vignettes are open to endless interpretation.

Sandra Breault spent most of her childhood and adolescence poring over comic books. She began with French and Belgian comics, with a brief stop at alternative comic art, before moving over to manga. After studying plastic arts at college in her home region, Lanaudiere, she began her BA in comic art at the University of Quebec at Ouaouais (UQO). She graduated in the spring of 2008 with high honours; this achievement highlights the esthetics and lyricism of her final project. In her comic art, our talented next-generation ambassador draws inspiration from fairy tales and legends to show her readers the poetry that resides in the human spirit.

Thierry Coppee, a teacher originally from Brussels who studied illustration at the Ecole de Recherches Graphiques, spent four years teaching elementary school before dedicating himself to his art. Following a brief collaboration with Spirou magazine, he began working on Les Blagues de Toto for Editions Delcourt. In 2004, he created a humourous world full of teasing tenderness in which the situations and characters are centered around Toto, an impish little boy who possesses an extraordinary gift for witty retorts. With nearly 200 jokes under his belt, Thierry Coppee is currently putting the finishing touches on the 7th Blagues de Toto album while keeping a close eye on the production of the first Toto cartoons.

Johanna (Schipper) was born in Taiwan in 1967 and now lives in Bordeaux, France. After Chinese and Dutch, she learned French by reading Tintin! After finishing high school, she moved to Angoulême to study comic art at the Ecole Superieure de l'Image. She has worked as a colorist and as an organizer of exhibitions on French-language comics, and has also taught master classes to young authors in Vietnam. After publishing several short stories and illustrations, she again began working on the stories of Nana, the young heroine of Les Phosfees, and presented the series in colour to Editions Delcourt in 1999. Her most recent publication, a comic for adults entitled Nos âmes sauvages and published by Futuropolis, earned her the Artemisia award in January 2008.

Based in Montreal, Maxim Douglas - a.k.a. Salgood Sam - has always drawn, just like his parents. Even before leaving school, this self-taught artist began creating his own comics and selling them through specialty shops. At the age of 18, he left home and began his career as a professional illustrator. For almost 20 years, he has worked as a freelancer, producing a multitude of drawings for Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Kitchen Sink and the Montreal Mirror. While putting the finishing touches on his album entitled Therefore Repent, he received a bursary from the Canada Council of the Arts in 2007 that allowed him to begin work on his next publication, Dream Life.

When he was young, Marc Delafontaine dreamed of becoming a police officer. However, deciding that he was no good at swinging a baton, he instead opted for his first passion: illustrating. He began by illustrating educational brochures, then worked as an animator, and finally moved on to illustrating children's books and comics. In 2004, he and partner/scripwriter Maryse Dubuc gave birth to three hip and ruthless adolesencents who came screaming into the comic world with the series Les Nombrils, which has garnered acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic.

Maryse Dubuc developed a marked interest in school - and more particularly in writing - at a very young age. Her love of words soon developed into a true passion that lead her to study French literature at university. A colorist, author of books for young people and partner of illustrator Marc Delafontaine, she writes the adventures of Jenny, Vicky and Karine, the three young stars growing up in the sexy and cruelly hilarious world of the scathing series Les Nombrils.

Born into a family of artists from the Bas St-Laurent region, Michel Falardeau completed his studies in the late 90s, first studying plastic arts in Sainte-Foy, then animation at Riviere-du-Loup. After spending a number of years creating video games, he turned to comic books. In 2005, Les Editions Paquet (Switzerland) discovered his talent as a comic artist and published Mertownville. In the form of an intimate narrative, this three-volume series focuses on Lydia, a heroine unlike any other, who invites the reader to discover the secret lives of superheroes. While Michel Falardeau may claim that his own life is boring, he certainly cannot say the same for his characters!

As Craig A. Taillefer explains it, his diet as a young boy consisted of crayons, modeling clay and comic books. It is clear that his exposure at a very young age to the worlds of Asterix, Uncle Scrooge, Turok Son of Stone and others shaped his mind. Which is why, against the advice of those around him, he chose to pursue a career in the arts. For over two decades, Craig has earned a living as an illustrator. Whether in television animation, illustration or the creation of his comic series, Wahoo Morris, the artist divides his time between his obsession for illustration and his passion for old albums ...and hammocks!

SURPRISE GUESTS!

Each year, the Rendez-vous international de la bande dessinee de Gatineau has the pleasure of welcoming several comic artists who, in a few strokes of a pencil, add their talent to that of the guest artists. This years suprise guests are Tom Fowler and Kan-J. These two surprise guests will be joined by Paul Roux and the comic artist-hosts from Surpriz Comix.
