April Schedule: Toronto Cartoonists Workshop

:: Posted by Bryan @ 3/13/2010 02:51:00 AM
TORONTO CARTOONISTS WORKSHOP is pleased to announce our line up of new classes for April 2010. They will be:

- Ty Templeton’s Comic Book Bootcamp Level One

- Kidding Around: Writing Comics for Younger Readers with Sam Agro

- Professional Layout and Story Telling for Comics and Graphic Novels with Ty Templeton

Comic Book Bootcamp Level I
is finally back. It covers indepth both the pictorial and writing aspects of comic book creation. The response to this course is amazing and it has been constantly full over the past four years in its various incarnations. The September 2009 edition was sold out very quickly following Fan Expo and had a waiting list. Apply now to avoid disappointment.

Writing Comics for Younger Readers
teaches the fundamentals of what is becoming a hot market in the book field. With critical and economic successes like BONE, AMULET and DIARY OF A WIMPY KID driving industry and consumer interest it is sure to be a growth area for some time. Sign up for this in depth study of the fundamentals of writing comics and animation for kids from 5 to 15 taught by Sam Agro. Sam has written for TVO’s Polka Dot Shorts, the animated segments of Elliot Moose is on the Loose and many, many scripts for DC’s Looney Tunes and Block Party comics.

Professional Layout and Story Telling
is a course I have been asked about for a long time. Many aspiring comic artists are interested in studying with Ty Templeton, but would rather not have to go through the writing lessons that are a part of the Bootcamp. If you are a student who specifically wants to focus on the art side of making comics, then this is the course for you. It compresses the art lessons taught in the Comic Book Bootcamp Level I and Level II into one course. This class will be quite intensive and students should expect to be bombarded with information in each session. Due to Ty's schedule I'm not sure when this will be offered again, so please take advantage of the opportunity now.

For FULL information on these workshops please go to our site at: http://www.cartoonistsworkshop.com

Thank you for your interest in and support for the Toronto Cartoonists Workshop. If you have any questions please address them to me at info@cartoonistsworkshop.com or by calling 647-502-7605.

6th annual Doug Wright Awards awards @ TCAF!

:: Posted by max @ 3/12/2010 07:10:00 AM
George Sprott,
and Aboriginal manga
lead nominations
for the 2010.

March 12, 2010 Toronto -- Running the gamut from the acclaimed to the unconventional, the 15 finalists for this year's Doug Wright Awards were announced today in Toronto.

Hand-picked by an esteemed panel of comics experts, the 2010 finalists represent the finest, most thought-provoking work produced by Canada's vibrant comics community.

The shortlist contains works that explore diverse subjects, from the legendary life of Kasper Hauser and the fictional life (and death) of a fading TV host, and spans a range of formats, from wordless lino-cuts graphic novels to "manga" inspired by Western Canadian Haida mythology.

The Doug Wright Awards finalists for Best Book are:

Back + Forth by Marta Chudolinska (The Porcupine's Quill)
George Sprott: (1894-1975) by Seth (Drawn and Quarterly)
Hot Potatoe by Marc Bell (Drawn and Quarterly)
Kaspar by Diane Obomsawin (Drawn and Quarterly)
Red: A Haida Manga by Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas (Douglas and McIntyre)

The Doug Wright Awards finalists for Best Emerging Talent are:

Adam Bourret I'm Crazy
Michael DeForge Lose #1 (Koyama Press), Cold Heat Special #7 (Picturebox)
Pascal Girard Nicolas (Drawn and Quarterly)
John Martz It's Snowing Outside. We Should Go For a Walk.
Sully The Hipless Boy (Conundrum Press)

The finalists for the 2010 Pigskin Peters Award (for unconventional, "nominally-narrative" comics) are:

Bebete
Simon Bosse (L'Oie de Cravan)
Dirty Dishes by Amy Lockhart (Drawn and Quarterly)
Hot Potatoe by Marc Bell (Drawn and Quarterly)
The Collected Doug Wright Volume One by Doug Wright (Drawn and Quarterly)

Founded in 2004 (in a dimly lit Toronto bar) to celebrate the finest in English-language comics and graphic novels, The Doug Wright Awards have since evolved into one of North America's foremost comics awards and one of its most anticipated events.

Wright Awards finalists defy easy categorization, and include past and present masters of the form and off-the-beaten-path newcomers alike, all vying for one of the most unique and coveted trophies in comics.

This year's nominees were chosen by a five-member panel who chose from works released in the 2009 calendar year. The panel included: comics historian and author Jeet Heer; filmmaker Jerry Ciccoritticartoonist Chester BrownWalrus comics blogger Sean Rogers, and; writer and Sequential.ca publisher Bryan Munn.

The winners are chosen by a jury that includes cartoonists, writers, actors, directors, musicians and, on occasion, politicians.

A featured event of the Toronto Comics Arts Festival (TCAF), the 2010 Doug Wright Awards ceremony will take place on Sat. May 8, at 7 pm at the Toronto Reference Library's new Bram & Bluma Appel Salon.

The C-List: Canadian Comix Quick Links

:: Posted by Bryan @ 2/25/2010 05:38:00 AM

Item: I seriously recommend this wonderful history of George Henderson, aka "Captain George," the father of comic book fandom in Canada. Publisher of Capt. George's Whizzbang and Memory Lane Publications, Henderson was also a pulp writer and bookstore owner who spearheaded the nostalgia boom of the 1960s and 70s. He was also an early publisher of Canadian underground and alternative comics and was part of the first wave of classic comic strip and comic book reprinters. One of the greatest Canadians who ever lived!

Item: The latest TCAF press release makes mention of the webcomics salon taking place in the penthouse of the event site Toronto Reference Library, featuring Transmission X, Kate Beaton, Ryan North, Joey Comeau and Emily Horne. Plus foreigners like Jeph Jacques (Questionable Content), Meredith Gran (Octopus Pie), Andrew Hussie (MSPaint Adventures), David Malki (Wondermark), Jonathan Rosenberg (Goats), Rene Engstrom (Anders Loves Maria).

Item: Tom Spurgeon will be attending TCAF!!!!!

Item: The National Post has words to say about Jason Kieffer's Rabble of Downtown Toronto.

Item: Manitoba cartoonist Sandy Debreuil and his brother Robin are at the centre of a burgeoning video game empire.

Item: London cartoonist and ex-druggie draws comic book pamphlet about fighting addiction.

Item: At the Shuster Award blog Kevin Boyd profiles Colin Upton, Nick Postic, and Terry Pallot, as part of the Visions of an Icon: Wolverine series of drawings.

Item: Dean of Canadian comics critics Jeet Heer has some thoughts on Jack Kirby, Nixon, and the nature of evil. As well, some jottings from his notebook. (I'd pay to read an anthology of "Jottings from Jeet!" )

Item: Jeet points us to the work of another critic, the University of Regina's Dr. Sylvain Rheault. Here's a google translated version of Rheault's history of Quebec comics.

MONCTON'S MONKEYTOWN COMIX JAM: FEB 22

:: Posted by max @ 2/20/2010 10:29:00 PM

What is the Monkeytown Comix Jam?
A collaborative gathering of cartoonists & doodlers passing around comix pages. Everyone contributes a panel of words, drawings or both until the page is full! Pages are posted to our blog, and headed for possible publication in a Jam book!

Jams are kid-friendly (accompanied by legal guardians) from 7pm to about 9pm. After that, we kind of become a bad influence what with the potty mouth and the questionable taste and stuff...

This Weekend: Con-G Anime Event, Guelph

:: Posted by Bryan @ 2/19/2010 11:46:00 AM

The Guelph anime convention, Con-G (both a short form for "Convention Guelph" and a pun on the Japanese word "kanji" which means pictograms, I think --although "congee" is a rice porridge popular in many Asian cultures) takes place this weekend.

Guests include webcomicker Lar deSouza, Doctor Holocaust, the 404s improv troupe, Savage Bandito, Solar Tempest, Stillvisions, Featherweight, and Hypersapiens.

Back for year 2, Con-G is

"being held at the Best Western Royal Brock Hotel & Conference Centre (same location, the hotel changed names shortly after Con-G 2009) on February 20 and 21.

What's special about our convention? Guelph is an awesome location! We're currently the only convention west of Toronto [In Ontario], making us more convenient for people in London, Hamilton and the Tri-City area. The Best Western is located across from the university and near the centre of Guelph. It is easily accessed by bus or car. Finally, the convention takes place in February, at a time when there are few other anime conventions.

For those that don't know, an anime convention is a place where anime enthusiasts come to share their love for anime and have a great time! There will be anime, themed games, dancing, vendors, discussions and much more. It's a great opportunity to meet people interested in the same things you are and discuss your favourite shows. Don't be intimidated! We welcome the young, the old, the casual anime enthusiast and the most hardcore fans. There's something for everyone."

:: Posted by Bryan @ 2/19/2010 06:36:00 AM

Press Release:

Join gangLion comics in celebration of their fourth issue!

Over the past year, gangLion has been cultivating a name in independent comics in Toronto. Works of tenderfoot comics' artists and writers are published in gangLion's semi-annual zine, offering artists the opportunity to share and hone skills in a supportive environment, and aim towards deadlines to celebrate their achievements. The very first issue was revealed in December of 2008, and now after much scratching and rumination, they are thrilled to announce the launch of Issue 4 - their finest compilation yet.

To celebrate, gangLion will be roaming about Southern Ontario and Montreal for a tour of comics-based workshops and launch parties. Along with co-creator and publisher Georgia Webber will be several of gangLion's contributors, and a touring band just to mix things up: Whistlestop, a brand new three piece outfit from London, Ontario originally, but now residing in Toronto.

TCAF: Call for Submissions, "New Narrative" Academic Conference

:: Posted by Bryan @ 2/12/2010 02:20:00 AM
Once again, Andrew Lesk is organizing an academic conference on comics to coincide with the Toronto Comics Art Festival:

3rd annual New Narrative Conference:
Narrative arts and visual media
An Interdisciplinary Conference
University of Toronto -- May 6-7, 2010

Keynote Speaker: Jeff Lemire (Tales of Essex County)

In keeping with the spirit of sequels, we are again soliciting papers on a wide range of graphic novels, comic art, and related visual media. Comics, whether in the form of novelistic illustrations, newspaper serials, animated films, film adaptations, graphic novels, or sequential art narratives, have been with us since the rise of literature itself, yet until recently such media have never been considered "serious"-or at least, serious enough to be considered novels that might be on university syllabi. But are illustrated novels and live action films really about the pictures and not the narrative? How can the history of the form be reconciled with consumer culture and the ill-defined categories of "high" and "low" culture?

Papers which examine and interpret these narratives in interdisciplinary forms are most welcome. Essays on novelistic illustrations, newspaper serials, animated films, film adaptations, graphic novels, or sequential art narratives may consider the following (incomplete) list: graphic novels and auto/biography -- illustrated and multi-media works -- web design and on-line comix -- film adaptations of comics -- series; engravings and caricatures -- the Comics Code Authority -- the "invention" of manga -- geopolitics/war and the graphic novel -- bande desinee & European comix - early comics & comic history -- illustrations in (literary) novels -- woodcut and "silent" artists.

Proposals should be 400-500 words and must clearly indicate significance, the line of argument, principal texts considered, and relation to existing scholarship (or originality).

One email copy of the proposal, and a 50 word bio note must be included, as an attachment in MS Word.

This conference will take place just before the Toronto Comic Arts Festival, May 8 & 9. (See TorontoComics.com)

Toronto Comicon offers half tables for March 26-28

:: Posted by max @ 1/20/2010 06:35:00 PM
M is for comics.

May is
TCAF
and March marks
the return
of Paradise Toronto Comicon,
now part of the

wizardworld universe.

Got this from Peter Dixon, wasn't aware there was a fuss over the pricing but good news for exhibitors in any case, they are offering an accessible price for half tables. Don't know if i can make it but we'll see. If all goes well it would be good to be there.

Hello everyone and Happy New Year. I hope your holidays were enjoyable.
Things are coming along well for our show coming up in March. I have received allot of feedback from many of you concerned with the higher prices compared to our shows in the past. Because of this we have a few options to offer. First we are lowering the price to $210 CDN plus GST. We are also offering four foot tables at $129 CDN plus GST. Hopefully this will allow everybody to be able to participate this year if they want to.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
Thanks
Peter Dixon

Comic Art Auction for Haiti

:: Posted by Bryan @ 1/18/2010 11:58:00 PM

Received this info from Hachette's Paule Bolduc but I think the place to go for more info, besides the artists themselves, is the FBDFQ site.

Want to own an original piece of comic book art and do something selfless? Here's your chance to do both at once!

The idea is simple, to help the victims of the Haiti earthquake, several comics artists will auction off an original page and the proceeds will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross.

Here's How:

1. Visit the blogs of the participating artists listed below.
2. Place an email bid.
3. Check in regularly to make sure you are the high bidder.

The starting price of each page is $100 CND. You have until Saturday, January 23 at noon to make your bid. At the end of the bidding period, the high bidder wins the page. In return, the artists agrees to remit the full amount to the Canadian Red Cross.

Vous aimeriez posseder une planche originale de BD et poser un geste altruiste? Voici l'occasion de faire d'une pierre deux coups !

Indy Comic Book Week: December 30th

:: Posted by Bryan @ 12/08/2009 11:19:00 AM

A few cartoonist acitivists have invented a new even to fill the gap in comic book stores during the last week of December:

Indy Comic Book Week is not only an event, but also a call to action.

Diamond Comic Distributors announced they will not ship any new comics for the last week of December. This company is the primary distributor of comic books in North America. What some would call a sad week without our favorite mainstream titles, we are calling an opportunity. This vacancy allows independent and small press comic book creators to claim this week as their own.

We challenge writers and artists to self publish new material for this week, and offer it to their local stores. We ask for retailers to take this as an opportunity to showcase local independent talent on the new release shelves. We encourage fans to break from their buying habits and try something new.

Raise your fist and proudly declare that comic books are more than an industry, more than a handful of corporations – it is a creative outlet for independent-minded artists and storytellers. This last week of 2009 belongs to you. Power to the people. Right on.

Jack Ruttan at the Montreal Comic Con

:: Posted by max @ 12/07/2009 07:30:00 PM
The Montreal Comic Con had it's December one day event this past Sunday.

Despite plans to attend i missed it, but local writer and cartoonist Jack Ruttan [utopiamoment.ca] was there and has uploaded another impressive set of interviews and photos. We've collected the video into a playlist you wan watch bellow, along with the slide show of photos bellow that. Read Jack's musings about it on his site here.

"Didn't I just do one of these in September? And then there was Expozine last month. So, many of these artist seemed like old friends. It was fun brandishing around my little Lumix DMC-FS3 and talking to artists. Sound was a little off (and some interviews are in French), but I think things are audible if you turn up the volume."

In the playlist appears Convention organizers Oscar and Elizabeth. Eric Theriault, Isabelle Stephen, Michel Lacombe, Sid Vane and Gloria, Patrick Langlois, Troma, Jimmy Suzan, Fred Mahieu, Steph Dumais, Noumier Tawilah, Jipi McCloud, And Janardan.

See the full Alpha Flight photo shoot here.

And don't be afraid to send Sequential your own photos of cosplayers dressed up like Captain Canuck or Nelvana of the Northern Lights.

Sunday Nov 1st Toronto - Canzine!

:: Posted by max @ 10/31/2009 03:56:00 PM

"Canada's Largest Zine Fair and Festival of Alternative Culture"

The heart of the event, indie publishers both in print and online come from across the country and the continent will fill the old Gladstone Hotel to it's gills, to show off their wares. We are cautioned to be amazed at the creativity, ingenuity, and sheer weirdness of it all.

There is a huge line up of stuff this year, sorry i'll be missing it. Check here for the many events held along side the main floor, in various rooms about the old hotel: Hotel Room Installations; 1:00-7:00pm; Canada's brightest and weirdest will be creating one day unique environments to explore in five of the Gladstone Hotel's Rooms. There's The City of Craft General Store, ARTCADE 2009, The Lost Window: Toronto Mannequin Window Displays 1930-1950 [provocative found-photo exhibit], Spelunkin' fer Culkin [3Dzine installation by Wowee Zonk], and....

The Toronto Comic Jam Room: All day long sequential art.
On the last Tuesday of every month the Toronto Comic Jam meets at the Cameron House to collaboratively create comics. But on November 1st it will be coming out of the back room and setting up shop in one of Canzine's art rooms where it will invite passers-by to stop in and draw a panel or two. Past Toronto Comic Jam books will be for sale. Links- regular Jam home page, and the Facebook event page.

The slide show is anything tagged Canzine from the flickr stream, if you go have a great show!

Coming Soon: Ottawa Comics Show

:: Posted by Bryan @ 10/28/2009 12:59:00 AM
From the organizers:
"The Big One" Sunday November 22nd / 2009

"Hi; It is that time of year again and Ottawa's semi-annual Civic centre show is just around the corner. We will be presenting our fall show in just under four weeks from today.

I will be posting notices in the next few weeks of different show features including a possible autograph session with a Montreal Canadians Hall of Fame player.

Professional card grading will be back with card grading done right on site... no sending your valuable cards away to the U.S.

I am also happy to announce that the Lansdowne administration has confirmed a change of venue to a much better facility. We were originally slated to be in the downstairs Salon's however we have been moved to the Aberdeen Pavilion / "Cattle Castle". If you remember a few shows back, we had a convention in this building and the benefits are many including ground floor load in for dealers and lots of natural lighting. This is a unique setting and I have been told that the Ottawa Senators won their last Stanley Cup in 1927 in this very same building.

The card tables are almost sold out so if you are a card dealer and haven't confirmed your space or are unsure of your status please drop me a line or give me a call.

There are still six comic tables available for rent.

There is an Ottawa 67's hockey game at 2:00 p.m. the same day as well as the weekly farmers market so paid parking will be in effect with a $5.00 charge per car AFTER 8:00 a.m. so all early risers get a $5.00 bonus as long as you are in the park before 8:00 a.m.

More news later this week.........."

Free Admission
