Jack Ruttan at the Montreal Comic Con

:: Posted by max @ 12/07/2009 07:30:00 PM
The Montreal Comic Con had it's December one day event this past Sunday.

Despite plans to attend i missed it, but local writer and cartoonist Jack Ruttan [utopiamoment.ca] was there and has uploaded another impressive set of interviews and photos. We've collected the video into a playlist you wan watch bellow, along with the slide show of photos bellow that. Read Jack's musings about it on his site here.

"Didn't I just do one of these in September? And then there was Expozine last month. So, many of these artist seemed like old friends. It was fun brandishing around my little Lumix DMC-FS3 and talking to artists. Sound was a little off (and some interviews are in French), but I think things are audible if you turn up the volume."

In the playlist appears Convention organizers Oscar and Elizabeth. Eric Theriault, Isabelle Stephen, Michel Lacombe, Sid Vane and Gloria, Patrick Langlois, Troma, Jimmy Suzan, Fred Mahieu, Steph Dumais, Noumier Tawilah, Jipi McCloud, And Janardan.

The C-List: Happy Birthday Inkstuds!

:: Posted by Bryan @ 11/18/2009 10:46:00 AM
Robin McConnell portrait inkstuds
Gotta bust out a C-List!
"Inkstuds, Expozine, Jesse Jacobs, ohmy!"

Item: The Inkstuds podcast celebrates 4 years (!) with a Seth interview. Congratulations to Robin McConnell and friends, and here's to 4 more years, and many more!

Item: Blogger and cartoonist Jack Ruttan recorded interviews at Expozine with some of the bright lights of Canadian comics. He's posted them with notes on his blog here and here, and we've created a playlist/player of them in sequence here.

Item: Sequential's own Salgood Sam was briefly at Expozine as well. He shot and edited a short doc of the event around 4pm to 5pm of the last day.

Item: A good large flickr photo set cataloging zine prints buttons and art books predominantly in a minimalist & cute style. The rare blue Mermacorn is the invention of probably this years youngest exhibitor, Jasper! Posted by Montreal designer Janice Wong.

Item: And rounding out the visual record of Expozine 2009 so far is an excellent set of 111 photos by Montreal Photographer Camille McOuat. The last one of Billy is perfect.

Item: Vancouver cartoonist Doug Fraser has designed an Absolut Vodka bottle just in time for the Olympics.

Item: Webcomics writer Ryan Sohmer in Montreal. As well, Sohmer and his "Least I Can Do" collaborator Lar DeSouza have announced a webcomics scholarship at the Vermont Center for Cartoon Studies.

Item: Another profile of Jesse Jacobs! He's on a run!

Item: Stuart Immonen has announced that the free webcomics serialization of his collaborations with his wife Kathryn have been pirated and that future online comics by the couple are in doubt. There is further comment here and many comments by others elsewhere. The latest collab, Moving Pictures, is due out in Mat 2010 from Top Shelf.

Item: Canadian comics historian, blogger, humourist, erstwhile Sequential contributor, and scriptwriter on the perils of maintaining 4 blogs while writing animation scripts for a living.

Item: The DC/Warner vs Disney/Marvel war is really heating up. Alarmed at the massive build-up of Canadian superheroes by Marvel, and with only one of their own DC plans to fire back by adding a Canadian to the Outsiders, previously a 1980s superhero team based in Batman's Gotham City. (Thanks to reader Maddy B for the tip!)

Item: Jeet Heer on Marx/Barks and Tomine/Oliveros.

FanExpo 4

:: Posted by max @ 9/02/2009 04:26:00 PM
Co: Patrick Berube; Been slow to post this, crazy town here at HQ! My fridge started blowing fusses!

Got these links the other day, Two vids with more to come promises Patrick Berube, Comic Book Bin's new editor. Andy Doan & Herve St-Louis took a camera to the Expo this year.

First a discussion with James Armstrong, the giant brain behind the machine. They talk mostly about the growth of the event, and how it's effected what they do.

And that's followed by a chat with some of the guys
from
Optimum Wound. {names?}

There's a bunch more posted in the last 4 days here that look to be from the FanExpo, pretty good though a bit more info and links to their work in the descriptions would be nice.

Looking around i found more vids too.

A nice little how too with Roger Corman!

...And a talk with Walter Koenig...

If you want more, check this page for the cosplay all kinds of fun.

Live Chat with Seth on CBC Today

:: Posted by Bryan @ 6/25/2009 04:09:00 AM
Graphic Novel month continues at the Canada Reads CBC Book Club. Host Hannah Sung (you remember her from the New Music) has been interviewing folks like crazy for their top 10 graphic novel recommendations. The other day it was Sean Jordan at Toronto's Silver Snail. Today is Peter from the Beguiling. Peter's #1 rec, George Sprott by Seth, leads to a live online chat today with Seth at 2pm ET. Full details here. Many people may be unaware that Seth actually can use a computer --here's your chance to quiz him about megahertz and facebook and stuff like that.

Batman Returns to Canada

:: Posted by Bryan @ 2/12/2009 02:50:00 AM
I saw it on Jimmy Kimmel, so it must be true. Batman got beat up in Hollywood and so is returning to Canada. From the LA Times:

Costumed characters on Hollywood's Walk of Fame allege attacks by music vendors, seek officials' help

Alex Brovedani, a 27-year-old actor who portrays such characters as Batman and Robin on the boulevard, said he has been assaulted four times by CD vendors.

"Sometimes they try to horn in when we're with tourists. Some characters will tell them to wait their turn. That's when they start threatening," Brovedani said.

"They beat up Nacho Libre and gave him a shiner. I've gotten punched in the face. I've been knocked down and kicked in the head. They beat Freddy Krueger with brass knuckles."

Being dressed as a superhero doesn't help, Brovedani said.

"With costumes on it's hard to fight back, even as Batman. Our costumes are so clunky we can't catch them when they run away."

Sean Ward, man of a million hats, is getting back into the comics thing

:: Posted by max @ 11/10/2008 02:20:00 PM
Counter to the popular notion that you have to be a neurotic introvert to play with funny books, Sean Ward proves you can be a sparkling super geek with good taste in cloths.

Makes me all fuzzy inside! Go Sean go!

For a while the Media thing has been keeping him busy but seems he's been hearing the call of his markers! He's working on some new characters and stuff; check it out, and let a little enthusiasm rub off on you.

Also he posted links to these cool videos. One is a short City tv interview, and the other is a short profile on Sean and how he does his 'thang'. Laugh if you will but the guy has parlayed all this into late night tv appearances, so.....

    Xtra profiles Zdenky Burkhardt and Jody Jollimore, the creators of Vick Vancouver, an interactive youtube video series inspired by graphic novels like Maus.

    Xtra also interviews Jillian and Mariko Tamaki, creators of the Skim graphic novel.

    Publishers Weekly interviews Jeff Lemire about his Essex County trilogy of graphic novels and the importance of hockey to a cartoonist growing up near Detroit.

    Johanna Draper Carlson reports on DC matching their Canadian cover price to the U.S. price. As one of her comments notes (and as Sequential noted awhile ago), this is mostly an anticlimactic move, as most Canadian retailers have been selling U.S. comic books at par since late last year.

    Bestsellers & Lynn Johnston Vid

    :: Posted by Bryan @ 11/08/2007 10:32:00 AM
    For you to view: a short doc from CBC's The National about Lynn Johnston wherein Canada's most famous cartoonist sounds off on her career, life, and work. Johnston, whose latest book is currently #4 on the Amazon.ca graphic novel bestseller list (#240 overall) certainly has had an interesting year and this tiny piece of video may temporarily satiate the many For Better or For Worse-watchers who are waiting on her next move.

    Speaking of bestseller lists, it's been awhile since Sequential has checked in with the online sellers to try and gauge what the folks are reading. Amazon.ca breaks down the comics and graphic novel list by category (GNs, manga, etc) as well as having a general overall list. The bestsellers of the moment are fairly predictable if you follow the media hype for comics at all, with titles like Buffy, Stephen King's Dark Tower, The Complete Peanuts, Fruits Basket and Naruto dominating the list. Some surprises, like the Perry Bible Fellowship collection (currently #3), keep the list interesting. As for Can-con, aside from a few work-for-hire U.S. imports like Tek Jansen and Y: The Last Man, you have to go pretty far down the list before you find a graphic novel by a Canadian creator (that would be Dramacon 3 by Svetlana Chmakova, currently available for pre-order and ranked at #78).

    The Chapters-Indigo list tells an entirely different story. You can figure out a bestselling manga list easily enough, but a general comics and graphic novel list is harder to come up with. Various searches yield different results. Try here, here, for fairly boring and predictable lists of bestsellers dominated by imported U.S. superhero publishers. A straight search for graphic novel bestsellers yields this list, which is closer to what you might see on Amazon. George Walker's collection of woodcut novels turned up in one search I did, but I can't remember how.

    At the opposite end of the spectrum, two lists published by a smaller Canadian retailer yield two extremely different yet interesting results. Montreal's Fichtre, specializing in French-language and Quebec bd, has a monthly and year-to-date top 15 list chock full of indie books and Quebec cartoonists like Michel Rabagliati and Jimmy Beaulieu.

    However, by far the most comprehensive list of retail graphic novel sales in Canada comes from Bookmanager. An industry standard, their full list just goes on and on, but here are the top 50 strip collections & graphic novels in Canada, as of November 8:
