06.Sep.2011 Today: Little Island Comics Opening, Toronto
Today is the opening of Little Island Comics in Toronto, billed as “the world’s first comic book store for kids.” The store is a spin-off from The Beguiling and is located at 742 Bathurst St, just a few steps from its parent store. Ironically located at the former location of the defunct Yesterday’s Heroes, at one time one of the oldest comic shops in town.
I know that Beguiling owner Peter Birkemoe has bemoaned the lack of space for years now, and anyone who has visited the shop can attest that it is packed to the gills with books in a not always exactly kid-friendly space, so this move makes sense, as does the focus on an under-served market. Kids comics and related books are still a big part of the market, one that the traditional comic book publishers like Marvel and DC don’t always cater to in their monthly offerings but one that the Beguiling and its crackerjack staff are uniquely situated to exploit, given their experience working with libraries and children’s authors. Best of luck to them in this new endeavour.
